Dietary factors related to dental caries may be both biological and behavioral. In the present study the relative contribution of a number of behavioral characteristics is analyzed in order to differentiate between caries-active (CA) and caries-inactive (CI) children. The study group comprised 49 CA and 55 CI 14-yr-old Danish children, constituting the dichotomous dependent variable. Several variables related to the social and cultural context in which food and snack consumption takes place were studied. Subsequently, their relative contributions to the discriminant function (CA vs. CI) were e

The homeless are a vulnerable population in many respects. Those experiencing homelessness not only experience personal and economic hardship they also frequently face discrimination and exclusion because of their housing status. Although past research has shown that identifying with multiple groups can buffer against the negative consequences of discrimination on well-being, it remains to be seen whether such strategies protect well-being of people who are homeless. We investigate this issue in a longitudinal study of 119 individuals who were homeless. The results showed that perceived group-

BACKGROUND: Perinatal racial disparities remain an elusive problem in the United States. African American women experience the highest rate of low-birth-weight deliveries. Understanding the factors contributing to infant birth weight is crucial to unraveling existing perinatal racial disparities.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to broaden knowledge of predictors of infant birth weight in African American people by examining stress and resource factors not explored routinely in perinatal research along with other known correlates of birth weight.
METHODS: A total of 119 pregnant African

INTRODUCTION: There is growing evidence that children with disabilities face an increased risk of violence globally. While child protection mechanisms to prevent and respond to violence-including formal government systems and more informal programmes and activities run by local communities or NGOs-are slowly becoming operationalised in low- and- middle-income countries, little is known about whether existing mechanisms are disability-inclusive. The aim of this study is to provide a better understanding of children with disabilities' experiences of violence and their access to available child p

BACKGROUND: The current study uses a nationally representative longitudinal dataset of sexual minority adults in the US to investigate the pathways from adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) to adulthood suicidal thoughts and behaviors.
METHODS: ACEs were measured at year one, potential mediators at year two, and suicidal thoughts and behaviors (suicidal ideation, intent, plan, and attempt) at year three. We conducted an exploratory mediation analysis to identify potential mediating factors linking ACEs to suicidal thoughts and behaviors. Ten candidate mediators were examined: social well-bein

OBJECTIVES: Black persons in the United States are more likely to suffer from social inequality. Chronic stress caused by social inequality and racial discrimination results in weathering of the body that causes physiological dysregulation and biological age being higher than chronological age (accelerated aging). Depression has been linked to both racial discrimination and accelerated aging and accelerated aging has been demonstrated to be higher in Black than White persons, on average. However, we know little about accelerated aging across the life course in Black Americans.

BACKGROUND: Transgender women have multiple disparities globally, including social rejection and stigma, HIV infection and untreated mental health problems. However, few data on transgender women are available in China. Therefore, this study aimed to explore transgender women's experiences on gender identity, disclosure, discrimination, transgender-specific medical care, and perceptions of HIV and sexually transmitted infections (STI) risk in China.
METHODS: A qualitative study was conducted in Nanjing and Suzhou city, China in 2018. Key informant interviews (n = 14) and focus group discussio

This study examines the role of social identity (acculturation and gender) in moderating the association between discrimination and Somali adolescent refugees' mental health. Participants were English-speaking Somali adolescent refugees between the ages of 11 and 20 (N = 135). Perceived discrimination, trauma history, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depressive symptoms, and behavioral acculturation were assessed in structured interviews. Fourteen in-depth qualitative interviews and 3 focus groups were also conducted. Results indicated that discrimination was common and associated with wo

BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death in the United States. We examined whether a model that classifies prevalent CVD using clinical risk factor precursors (social, environmental, and behavioral factors), age, and sex, organized according to the Vital Conditions for Health framework, demonstrates good discrimination and calibration.
METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, we analyzed the 2021 Medical Expenditure Panel Survey (MEPS) Social Determinants of Health (SDOH) dataset (N = 18,435 adults). Cardiovascular disease prevalence was defined using self-reporte

This preliminary study explored the effects of MDMA-assisted therapy on trauma symptoms related to discrimination, as measured by the Trauma Symptoms of Discrimination Scale (TSDS). A total of five diverse participants, who experienced multiple types of discrimination (e.g., gender, racial/ethnic, social class, age, sexual orientation), were assessed before and after treatment. A paired-samples t-test indicated a significant reduction in TSDS scores following therapy, with mean scores decreasing by 38% (t(4) = 2.85, p = .046). The effect size was large (Cohen's d = 1.28), though this estimate

Problematic Internet Use (PIU)-marked by compulsive or maladaptive online behavior-is an emerging public health issue among adolescents and is associated with psychological distress, social difficulties, and academic problems. In Finnmark County, Norway's northernmost and ethnically diverse region, limited research has examined the underlying mechanisms of PIU among Sámi and non-Sámi youth, despite increasing levels of digital engagement. This study protocol outlines a population-based cross-sectional survey investigating the associations between social norms (descriptive and injunctive), ethn

We assessed different aspects of tactile perception in young children (3-6 years) with autism. Autistic and neurotypical children completed vibrotactile tasks assessing reaction time, amplitude discrimination (sequential and simultaneous) and temporal discrimination (temporal order judgment and duration discrimination). Autistic children had elevated and more variable reaction times, suggesting slower perceptual-motor processing speed and/or greater distractibility. Children with autism also showed higher amplitude discrimination and temporal order judgement thresholds compared to neurotypical

Accurate assessment is crucial for determining appropriate therapeutic interventions for social anxiety and conducting sound clinical research. While self-report measures of social anxiety are widely used in both research and clinical settings, they have several drawbacks inherent to their textual nature. Here, we describe the development and initial validation of the Visual Social Anxiety Scale (VSAS), a novel picture-based self-report measure of social anxiety, based on the well-established widely-used Liebowitz Social Anxiety Scale (LSAS). Specifically, the 24 items of the LSAS were used as

Our study provides a critical analysis and synthesis of the existing literature, public health data, and policy documents related to HIV stigma, legal barriers, and health care access in Tunisia. It examines complex challenges faced by people living with HIV (PLWH) in Tunisia, focusing on those three areas of concern. We identify persistent stigma and discrimination as critical obstacles, compounded by restrictive legal frameworks and health care access challenges, including workforce shortages and insufficient training. We highlight promising policy and advocacy efforts for improving care and

Stigma and discrimination towards those with a mental disorder are prevalent. This is especially true of those with a personality disorder (PD). The current study explores the extent to which individuals living with a PD experience internalized stigma and discrimination due to their diagnosis as well as the prevalence of self-reported microaggressions and negative attitudes towards individuals with PDs by mental health providers. Individuals with personality disorders (n = 218; Sample 1) and mental health providers (n = 75; Sample 2) were recruited online via postings on social media, online f

Discrimination toward people living with migraine and other headache disorders is widespread and socially accepted. Stigma toward these diseases is both a manifestation of these discriminatory attitudes and a sustainer of them. For those living with migraine and headache disorders, stigma limits the full expression of their lives, as well as the likelihood of receiving health care to reduce the burden. In the past decade, public advocacy organizations have emerged in the United States and internationally to counter the consequences of this stigma. These organizations have raised public awarene

BACKGROUND: This study examined the longitudinal associations of psychosocial stress subgroups with cardiovascular disease (CVD) events and whether social support, neighborhood cohesion, and physical activity modified these associations in MESA (Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis).
METHODS AND RESULTS: Data from 6349 adults (aged: 62.2 ± 10.2 years; 52.9% women) from the MESA study with no prior CVD in 2000 to 2002 (baseline) were used in this analysis. Latent class analysis was used to specify distinct psychosocial stress subgroups based on self-reported stressors stemming from respondent

This meta-synthesis systematically reviewed qualitative studies on fertility concerns among people living with HIV (PLWH) to inform targeted interventions. A systematic search of PubMed, Web of Science, CINAHL, Cochrane, and Embase was conducted from inception to October 15, 2025. Synthesizing 76 extracted themes from 18 studies revealed 11 subthemes organized into three overarching dimensions: biological (fear of transmission, health decline), psychological (shock, chronic distress, internalized stigma, reproductive ambivalence), and social (externalized stigma, economic constraints, policy/n

Alcohol use during pregnancy remains a major public health concern, with societal expectations of abstinence often resulting in stigma toward women who drink. To examine stigma and discrimination attributed to pregnant women consuming alcohol of varying strength and social context, within hypothetical scenarios. We explored whether greater stigma was attributed to consuming alcohol in social settings vs. alone, and whether consumption of low and alcohol-free drinks are less stigmatised than standard strength alcohol drinks. The research employed a vignette-based experimental design across thre
