Connectivity between the cerebrum and cerebellum during social and non-social sequencing using dynamic causal modelling.

This analysis explores the effective connectivity of the cerebellum with the cerebral cortex during the generation of correct sequences of social and non-social events, using dynamic causal modelling (DCM). Our hypothesis is that during human evolution, the cerebellum's function evolved from a mere coordinator of fluent sequences of motions and actions, to an interpreter of action sequences without overt movements that are important for social understanding. This requires efficient neural communication between the cerebellum and cerebral cortex. In a functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI

Evolution and revolution in child psychiatry: ADHD as a disorder of adaptation.

Current knowledge about early plasticity and children's responsiveness to environmental modifications as well as the atheoretical nature of current nosological systems necessitate alternative models to explain the phenomena of childhood behavioral and emotional disturbances. Evolutionary biology provides one such framework. It organizes data from the behavioral and cognitive sciences and parallels similar efforts in other areas of medicine and biology. Through an evolutionary biological lens, some mental disorders are better viewed as an adaptive response to early pathogenic environments and/o

A Darwinian approach to the origins of psychosis.

BACKGROUND: The onset of psychotic illness in the reproductive phase of life with a decrease in fecundity (and approximately constant incidence across populations) requires an evolutionary explanation. What is the survival value of the predisposing gene or genes? METHOD: Evolutionary theories, including the author's, are reviewed and critically compared. RESULTS: Some theories (e.g. Huxley et al, 1964) postulate an advantage outside the nervous system: such theories fail to explain either the characteristic age distribution or constant incidence. More plausible are theories that relate the a

Different reproductive strategies in males and females.

The claim for a connection between stressful, unstable childhood environments and early pubertal maturation has only modest empirical support. However, granting the claim for purposes of discussion, and taking an evolutionary perspective, it is argued here that early puberty need not imply a shift from a "quality" toward a "quantity" reproductive strategy. Indeed, for females to make such a shift when they cannot count on secure pair bonding or paternal investment from a male would not serve their inclusive fitness interests; indeed, probably the reverse. Delayed puberty among juveniles with s

Ostracism.

In this review, I examine the social psychological research on ostracism, social exclusion, and rejection. Being ignored, excluded, and/or rejected signals a threat for which reflexive detection in the form of pain and distress is adaptive for survival. Brief ostracism episodes result in sadness and anger and threaten fundamental needs. Individuals then act to fortify or replenish their thwarted need or needs. Behavioral consequences appear to be split into two general categories: attempts to fortify relational needs (belonging, self-esteem, shared understanding, and trust), which lead general

The Everlasting Ovary: Decoding the Mechanisms of Lifelong Oogenesis in the Naked Mole-Rat.

The naked mole-rat (Heterocephalus glaber) is a fascinating model organism which challenges conventional paradigms in evolutionary developmental biology. As one of the two known eusocial mammals with a reproductive hierarchy akin to social insects, the naked mole-rat presents an exceptional system for studying the interplay between social structure, environmental adaptation, and developmental plasticity. This chapter explores how the species' unique reproductive strategies-including lifelong fertility, postnatal oogenesis, and social suppression of reproduction-reshape our understanding of mam

Relationship Value, Emotion, and Uncertainty Shape Conflict-Resolution Communication in a Wild Primate.

Studying how nonhuman primates tailor signals and behavioral patterns to resolve ingroup conflicts provides insight into the evolution of communicative and behavioral complexity in conflict management. Here, we explore how, in wild geladas, primates with a uniquely rich vocal-visual repertoire, aggressors and victims take into account relationship value, perceived risk and uncertainty, emotional dynamics, and audience and external factors when producing nonaggressive signals after conflicts. We found that reconciliation in the study groups occurred rapidly, was mainly initiated by aggressors,

[Giant pleomorphic adenoma of the parotid gland].

INTRODUCTION: Slow evolution pleomorphic parotid adenoma may be diagnosed late. These giant tumors have a functional, esthetic, and social impact. They raise prognostic issues because of the risk of degeneration. We present a case of a giant pleomorphic adenoma involving the parotid glands and try to explain the reasons for the diagnostic delay and describe therapeutic specificities. CASE REPORT: A 54 year-old male patient consulted for swelling of the parotid region slowly evolving over the last 10 years. This lesion had been unsuccessfully treated by conventional methods. [Treatment of depression secondary to psychotic disorders].

More than 25% patients suffering from psychotic disorders would show during their evolution some depressive disorders. More than 10% would die from suicide. Secondary depressions following psychotic disorders are heterogeneous. They have to be specified in order to assess therapeutics including biological psychological and socio-environmental approaches. Treatment of depressive disorders correlated to psychotic symptomatology, being mood congruent or not, is the same as characterized depression. However it is preferred to associate antidepressant and neuroleptic or electroconvulsivotherapy. De

Social factors contributing to the development of chronic low back pain: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Research and clinical practice approaches to chronic low back pain (CLBP) have predominantly focused on biomedical and psychological aspects, often overlooking social influences. The biopsychosocial (BPS) model provides a theoretical framework for conceptualizing CLBP as the outcome of complex interactions between individuals and their environment, offering valuable insights into its progression and informing effective care strategies. This scoping review seeks to identify social factors contributing to CLBP, and to propose a classification system that offers a complementary perspe

The impact of cultural evolution on the ego ideal, depression, psychosis, and suicide: a South India community study of the widow.

Cultural factors have a significant impact on the manifestation of psychiatric illness and the development of the ego ideal. The evolution of the widow's cultural role in a South India village provides insight on the ego ideal through several generations. As treatment of widows changed so that their appearance became indistinguishable from other women, they no longer became objects of revulsion. A case study approach documents the interrelationship of changes in the cultural ego ideal on psychiatric illness among widows in a South India village over a period of more than four decades.

Primate Play and the Classificatory Making of Human Nature.

Primate play is often interpreted as a developmental activity through which immature individuals acquire capacities used later in life. This essay uses play to examine a wider process in behavioral research: how classification helps produce behavioral data and shapes the explanations those data can support. It asks how juvenile actions are classified as play and become evidence for claims about development, evolution, and "human nature." I argue that the same analogies to adult behavior that help recognize and organize juvenile actions as play later reappear in explanations of the roles or cap

Mating Behavioral Function of Preoptic Galanin Neurons Is Shared between Fish with Alternative Male Reproductive Tactics and Tetrapods.

Understanding the contribution of neuropeptide-containing neurons to variation in social behavior remains critically important. Galanin has gained increased attention because of the demonstration that galanin neurons in the preoptic area (POA) promote mating and parental care in mammals. How widespread these mechanisms are among vertebrates essentially remains unexplored, especially among teleost fishes, which comprise nearly one-half of living vertebrate species. Teleosts with alternative reproductive tactics exhibit stereotyped patterns of social behavior that diverge widely between individu

[Housing problems during the discharge process from a public hospital on the Costa del Sol].

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the evolution of housing problems that complicate hospital discharge over a period of more than 20 years, as well as changes in the profile of the affected patients. METHOD: We conducted a time series analysis, based on clinical-administrative data and social work department consultations at a public hospital in Andalusia. Their evolution between 2004 and 2025 was studied, as well as the characteristics of the affected patients at the beginning and end of the historical period. RESULTS: 1220 referrals for housing problems that complicated discharge were analyzed. The ra

[Madura foot: a rare pathology in Morocco (about 15 cases)].

Mycetoma is a rare disease in Morocco. The purpose of this work is to increase the awareness of this infection that is still not diagnosed in our context by Moroccan practitioners, as well as to show the medical treatment limits in Madura foot disease. This is a retrospective study of 15 patients with an average age of 34 years. All patients presented classic lesions: swelling fistulizing of slow evolution, with elective foot localization. In spite of the identification of pathogenic agents, the delay of diagnosis and the osseous infringement imposed amputations for 14 patients. After a 3-year

Social Model Hospice: Providing Hospice and Palliative Care for a Homeless Population in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Health care for the homeless population is a complex challenge and represents a significant gap in care, particularly for those at the end of life. Hospice care may be desired but is rarely an option for people without residences, social support, and payment sources. Social model hospice is a unique paradigm of care delivery that offers a viable solution to make hospice and palliative care possible for this population. In this historical report from interviews with early organizers, prior and current leadership (n = 6), the evolution of The INN Between in Salt Lake City, Utah, is described. In

COMPLEX COLONY STRUCTURE IN SOCIAL INSECTS: I. ECOLOGICAL DETERMINANTS AND GENETIC CONSEQUENCES.

For social insect species, intraspecific variation in colony social structure provides an opportunity to relate the evolution of social behavior to ecological factors. The species Myrmica punctiventris is a cavity-dwelling forest ant that exhibits very different colony structures in two populations in the northeastern United States. Combined data from seasonal censuses, allozyme electrophoresis, and worker hostility tests showed that a population of M. punctiventris in Vermont was strictly monogynous and seasonally polydomous. The same procedures showed that a population of M. punctiventris in

Social Contagion in COVID-19 Discussions Within the Belgian Reddit Community: Statistical and Modeling Study.

BACKGROUND: Understanding how sentiment toward COVID-19 mitigation measures evolves on social networks can help to inform infectious disease models and policymakers. Even though numerous studies have described social media interactions during the pandemic, few have modeled the underlying dynamics of sentiment contagion and polarization. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate topic emergence and sentiment evolution in COVID-19 mitigation discussions on r/Belgium, focusing on (1) whether discussion topics exhibited social contagion, (2) whether expressed sentiment displayed homophily, and (

A cross-disciplinary view of current and emerging COVID-19 developments.

The emergency phase of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic is over. Still, the work goes on in understanding the SARS-CoV-2 virus and its evolution, infection impacts - acute and long term - as well as therapeutics and the lessons for preventing and responding to future pandemics. Research into the long-term post-infection effects and therapeutic interventions also expands as the post-infection period lengthens. We provide an overview of the leading edge of COVID-19 research across clinical, epidemiological and social domains.
