Children's social interactions with caregivers play a crucial role in their development. One strong cue to an ongoing social interaction is the mutual dependency of interaction partners' behaviours, a feature we refer to as social contingency. Socially contingent interactions have been shown to support learning, but it remains underexplored whether social contingency alone, even in the absence of other social cues, can drive developmental advantages. Addressing this question requires faithfully representing bi-directional contingency in infant-adult interactions while isolating it from other s

In response to growing concerns about pupil well-being and mental health in test-driven classrooms, this study examined how integrating Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) competencies into classroom assessment promotes holistic development in Ghanaian basic schools. Using a pre-test/post-test control group design, data were collected from 360 pupils aged 10–15 years across six public schools in urban, peri-urban, and rural settings. Participants were randomly assigned to either an SEL-integrated assessment group (n = 180) or a control group (n = 180). Standardized instruments the MHC–SF, SEI, CD-

BACKGROUND: Health policy and systems research (HPSR) is vital for strengthening health systems, yet its development in West Africa remains constrained by limited capacity. To strengthen capacity, the West African Network of Emerging Leaders in Health Policy and Systems (WANEL) was created to foster peer learning and cross-country collaboration among early- and mid-career HPSR actors. This study used Social Network Analysis (SNA) to examine WANEL's structure and functioning, with the aim of understanding how well the network supports its capacity and HPSR field-building goals.
METHODS: A cros

Anxiety disorders are the most prevalent type of mental health disorders and are characterised by excessive fear and worry. Despite affecting one in four individuals within their lifetime, there remains a gap in our understanding regarding the underlying pathophysiology of anxiety disorders, which limits the development of novel treatment options. Exploring blood-based biomarkers of anxiety disorder offers the potential to predict the risk of clinically significant anxiety in the general population, increase our understanding of anxiety pathophysiology, and to reveal options for preventative t

Background Existing studies on cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) often focus on individual-level behavioral risk factors, but research examining social determinants is limited. This study applies a novel machine learning approach to identify the key predictors of county-level care costs and prevalence of CVDs (including atrial fibrillation, acute myocardial infarction, congestive heart failure, and ischemic heart disease). Methods and Results We applied the extreme gradient boosting machine learning approach to a total of 3137 counties. Data are from the Interactive Atlas of Heart Disease and Str

Research on areas such as social cognition, autistic traits, and minor physical anomalies in comorbid Specific Learning Disorder (SLD) and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is limited. In this study, we compared these areas in children aged between 8 and 14 with comorbid SLD and ADHD and their typically developed peers. Emotion recognition and social cognition were evaluated by Faces Test, Reading the Mind in the Eyes Test, Comprehension Test, and Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale. Autism Spectrum Screening Questionnaire and Social Responsiveness Scale were used for screen

BACKGROUND: There is a limited amount of data on the safety profile of the COVID-19 vector vaccine Gam-COVID-Vac (Sputnik V). Previous infodemiology studies showed that social media discourse could be analyzed to assess the most concerning adverse events (AE) caused by drugs.
OBJECTIVE: We aimed to investigate mild AEs of Sputnik V based on a participatory trial conducted on Telegram in the Russian language. We compared AEs extracted from Telegram with other limited databases on Sputnik V and other COVID-19 vaccines. We explored symptom co-occurrence patterns and determined how counts of admi

BACKGROUND: Social media networks provide an abundance of diverse information that can be leveraged for data-driven applications across various social and physical sciences. One opportunity to utilize such data exists in the public health domain, where data collection is often constrained by organizational funding and limited user adoption. Furthermore, the efficacy of health interventions is often based on self-reported data, which are not always reliable. Health-promotion strategies for communities facing multiple vulnerabilities, such as men who have sex with men, can benefit from an automa

Learning engagement is essential in vocational education that can help in students' development and equip them academically and professionally. The present study aimed to elucidate the dynamic interplay of perceived social support and engagement in learning among Chinese vocational students, examining a chain of mediation of emotional resilience and mindfulness and the moderating role of depression. A questionnaire was administered to 1545 Chinese vocational students. The evidence from this study suggested that (1) the perceived social support had a significant positive direct effect on learni

Infants possess powerful learning abilities, but their neural resources must be deployed parsimoniously toward the most relevant information in a given social context. Adults curate infants' information selection through ostensive marking of valuable content using social cues such as eye-contact. However, the neural mechanisms that support social gating of early learning remain unclear. Here, we demonstrate that - in infants from UK and Singapore - unidirectional adult-speaker to infant-listener neural coupling mediates infants' selection of socially-relevant information for learning. Specific

PURPOSE: Social media is vital for improving healthcare access, especially among disadvantaged groups. During the COVID-19 pandemic, young breast cancer survivors (YBCSs) in China increasingly relied on social media for health information, shaping their experiences and needs. However, little is known about how their online behaviors changed during such crises. This study examines the characteristics and health needs of Chinese YBCSs on social media during the pandemic, providing evidence to inform public health management in emergencies.
METHODS: We used web crawlers to collect 6,415 breast c

The COVID-19 pandemic necessitated a rapid transition to online education, presenting unique challenges for medical students, especially those with psychological conditions such as attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and social anxiety. This study aimed to investigate the relationships between ADHD and social anxiety symptoms and medical students' online learning self-efficacy and readiness in Turkey. A cross-sectional correlational study was conducted using a convenience sample of 98 medical students (62% female; mean age = 22.98 ± 0.13 years) who experienced online education duri

BACKGROUND: Benzodiazepines are frequently prescribed drugs; however, their prolonged use can lead to tolerance, dependence, and other adverse effects. Despite these risks, long-term use remains common, presenting a public health concern. This study aims to explore the beliefs and opinions held by the public regarding benzodiazepines, as understanding these perspectives may provide insights into their usage patterns.
METHODS: We collected public tweets published in English between January 1, 2019, and October 31, 2020, that mentioned benzodiazepines. The content of each tweet and the characte

Schools in the United States increasingly incorporate social-emotional learning (SEL) as a part of comprehensive youth suicide prevention programs in schools. We reviewed the literature to investigate the inclusion of SEL in youth suicide prevention efforts. We identified several known risk factors to youth suicide, namely, hopelessness, anxiety, substance use, and child sexual abuse, then cross-walked that review to SEL competencies shown to mitigate each of those known risk factors. We found all SEL competencies, to some extent, across all the evidence-based, school-based youth suicide preve

Although active learning improves student outcomes in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) programs, it may provoke anxiety in some students. We examined whether two psychological variables, social anxiety (psychological distress relating to the fear of negative evaluation by others) and academic self-efficacy (confidence in one's ability to overcome academic challenges), interact with student perceptions of evidence-based instructional practices (EBIPs) and associate with their final grades in a STEM-related course. Human anatomy and physiology students in community colleg

RATIONALE: There is evidence that pre-exposure to drugs of abuse can induce sensitization to several of their effects.
OBJECTIVE: Four experiments were conducted to investigate the effect of heroin pre-exposure on modulation of memory consolidation as indexed by heroin's action on rate of learning.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Male Sprague-Dawley rats were tested on a social recognition learning task which assesses changes in investigation during repeated exposure to the same rat (habituation training: four sessions) and during exposure to a novel rat (dishabituation test). In the first experiment

We evaluated an 8- to 12-hour Health Belief Model-Social Learning Theory (HBM-SLT)-based sex education program against several community- and school-based interventions in a controlled field experiment. Data on sexual and contraceptive behavior were collected from 1,444 adolescents unselected for gender, race/ethnicity, or virginity status in a pretest-posttest design. Over 60% completed the one-year follow-up. Multivariate analyses were conducted separately for each preintervention virginity status by gender grouping. The results revealed differential program impacts. First, for preinterventi

Drama-based social-emotional learning has gained increasing attention in higher education, yet participation in embodied activities does not in itself ensure sustained engagement or social-emotional development. Less is known about how teacher support, peer interaction, and embodied participation become interconnected in classroom practice, or about the conditions under which this process may be disrupted. This multisite interpretive qualitative study was conducted across four universities in eastern China. Data were generated through interviews with 24 students and eight teaching staff, suppl

Social anxiety is reliably characterized by biases toward avoidance and aversive learning. Frontal-midline theta (FM-theta) oscillations have been implicated as a key neural mechanism underlying these learning biases. Here, we combined a dynamic network neuroscience approach with computational modeling to investigate how FM-theta oscillatory activity coordinates large-scale functional network interactions on a trial-to-trial basis during feedback-guided learning. Additionally, we examined how these neural dynamics are associated with social anxiety across different social contexts. A sample of
