ME/CFS and the emotional toll of persistent disbelief: from epistemic to affective injustice.

Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS) is a debilitating chronic illness whose sufferers are frequently met with disbelief, stigmatization, and psychologization in both clinical and social contexts. Recent work has used the concept of "epistemic injustice" to illuminate important dimensions of this problem, especially the ways in which ME/CFS patients are discredited as knowers and denied adequate interpretive resources. This paper argues that the harms associated with persistent disbelief in ME/CFS are not exhausted by this epistemic dimension. Drawing on recent philosoph

Transgender Women in India: A Syndemic and Intersectional Framework Addressing HIV Care Gaps.

The prevalence of HIV among transgender women (TGW) in India is disproportionately high, estimated at 4% to 8% in comparison with the national average of 0.2%. Despite free antiretroviral therapy (ART) provided by the government, TGW encounter multilevel barriers-including stigma, poverty, and lack of gender-affirming care-that hinder HIV care access and retention. Existing behavioral frameworks fail to address the compounded effects of systemic oppression on the health of TGW with HIV in India. We present a conceptual framework integrating syndemic theory and intersectionality to examine stru

Role of adult attachment and spiritual attachment on meaning in life among religious minorities in Thailand: Insights for mental health promotion.

Attachment theory suggests that secure relationships are foundational to meaning in life, but less is known about the role of spiritual attachment, especially among religious minorities. This study examined whether attachment to God mediates the relationship between insecure human attachment and the presence of meaning in life among Thai Protestant Christians. A cross-sectional survey was conducted with Thai Protestant Christians, assessing insecure human attachment (avoidant and anxious), attachment to God, and the presence of meaning in life using validated self-report measures. Mediation an

Understanding the needs of justice-involved adults with fetal alcohol spectrum disorder in an Indigenous community.

Individuals with fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) experience a range of neurodevelopmental challenges, often compounded by social and environmental adversity. One of the most concerning outcomes that can be associated with FASD is involvement in the justice system, where individuals with FASD are vastly over-represented. Individuals with FASD who are both justice-involved and Indigenous experience added layers of marginalization. In this community-based study, we explored the needs of 16 adults who participated in an FASD-informed restorative justice program in an Indigenous community in

Characteristics of traumatic brain injury-related healthcare visits across social determinants of health: A population-based birth cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Traumatic brain injury is a major cause of death and disability worldwide, with almost half of new cases occurring in children, adolescents, and young adults. However, data on injury characteristics stratified by social determinants of health are scarce. This study explores severity, intent, and mechanism of traumatic brain injury sustained during childhood, adolescence, and young adulthood by social determinants of health. METHODS: This study utilizes a population-based birth cohort of births in publicly funded hospitals in Ontario, Canada, between April 1, 1992 and March 31, 202

Collaborating With Service Users to Select Psychiatry Residents Committed to Health Equity and Social Justice.

PROBLEM: Advocates have called for health services to be delivered equitably to all. Academic psychiatry must play a role in this work, given its history of creating and perpetuating the marginalization of people experiencing mental health issues. While medical educators have started teaching concepts such as structural competency and cultural safety, careful consideration of who enters the medical workforce and what values they bring is also important. APPROACH: The authors report on the first 5 years (2016-2021) of a collaboration with individuals who have used mental health or addiction se

Trends in the use of benzodiazepine receptor agonists among working-age adults in Belgium from 2004 to 2018.

INTRODUCTION: The use of psychotropics, such as benzodiazepine receptor agonists (BzRAs), among working-age adults in Belgium has shown educational differences. However, it is unclear how work status plays a role in this relationship. Therefore, this research aims to investigate whether work status explains observed educational differences in BzRA use. In addition, considering medicalisation processes, where non-medical factors, such as work status, are increasingly associated with medical mental health care-seeking behavior, this research also aims to investigate whether work status explains

Common trust and personal safety issues: A systematic review on the acceptability of health and social interventions for persons with lived experience of homelessness.

BACKGROUND: Persons experiencing homelessness and vulnerable housing or those with lived experience of homelessness have worse health outcomes than individuals who are stably housed. Structural violence can dramatically affect their acceptance of interventions. We carried out a systematic review to understand the factors that influence the acceptability of social and health interventions among persons with lived experience of homelessness. METHODS: We searched through eight bibliographic databases and selected grey literature sources for articles that were published between 1994 and 2019. We

EXPERIENCING SYNDEMIC: DISENTANGLING THE BIOSOCIAL COMPLEXITY OF TUBERCULOSIS THROUGH QUALITATIVE RESEARCH.

Tuberculosis (TB) remains a major global public health problem that has become a crisis fuelled by HIV and the increasing occurrence of antimicrobial resistance. What has been termed the biosocial nature of TB challenges effective control of the disease. Yet, biosocial interactions involved in the persistence of TB in diverse settings are difficult to systematically account for. The recently developed framework of syndemics provides a way to capture how complex health problems result from the interactions between diseases such as HIV and TB, and harmful social conditions such as unemployment,

Cross-border ties and Arab American mental health.

Due to increasing discrimination and marginalization, Arab Americans are at a greater risk for mental health disorders. Social networks that include ties to the country of origin could help promote mental well-being in the face of discrimination. The role of countries of origin in immigrant mental health receives little attention compared to adjustment in destination contexts. This study addresses this gap by analyzing the relationship between nativity, cross-border ties, and psychological distress and happiness for Arab Americans living in the greater Detroit Metropolitan Area (N = 896). Household Socioeconomic and Demographic Correlates of Cryptosporidium Seropositivity in the United States.

BACKGROUND: Cryptosporidium are parasitic protozoa that infect humans, domestic animals, and wildlife globally. In the United States, cryptosporidiosis occurs in an estimated 750,000 persons annually, and is primarily caused by either of the Cryptosporidium parvum genotypes 1 and 2, exposure to which occurs through ingestion of food or water contaminated with oocytes shed from infected hosts. Although most cryptosporidiosis cases are caused by genotype 1 and are of human origin, the zoonotic sources of genotype 2, such as livestock, are increasingly recognized as important for understanding hu

Adolescent health and the intersectionality of ethnicity/race, sex, and sexual orientation: A national probability sample from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development study.

Although children with marginalized sociodemographic characteristics are exposed to increased health risk and disparities, there is a paucity of population-based research on health status of children occupying multiple social marginalities. The present study investigated implications of children's intersectional sociodemographic characteristics on health risk indicators. In this longitudinal cohort study, we used longitudinal data from the ongoing Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development study. The study used a population-based sample of 9- to 10-year-old children attending private and public sc

Factors Contributing to Suicide Deaths Among Sri Lankan Tamil Men in Toronto, Canada: Perspectives of Family, Friends, and Service Providers.

Approximately 4500 Canadians die by suicide annually, with men at three times the risk of women. Some ethnic and racialized groups face heightened vulnerability due to discrimination, historical trauma, and limited access to mental healthcare. In response to an alarming number of suicide deaths among Sri Lankan Tamil men in the Greater Toronto Area in 2019, this community-engaged study investigated micro-, meso-, and macro-level factors that contribute to suicide deaths in this population. In collaboration with Vasantham Tamil Wellness Centre, we conducted a community-based qualitative interpr

Does Multilingualism Shape Aging Equally Across Populations?

Multilingualism has emerged as a complex sociocognitive and behavioral trait with potential implications for cognitive resilience, functional capacity, and healthy aging. Recent large-scale European studies suggest that multilingual exposure is associated with more favorable biobehavioral aging profiles when cognitive, functional, and cardiometabolic domains are jointly considered. However, the interpretation and generalization of these findings require careful contextualization. In many regions of the Global South, particularly in Africa and Latin America, multilingual experiences are frequen

Fear and loathing in New England: examining the health-care perspectives of homeless people in rural areas.

Little anthropological research has been conducted on the health care perspectives of homeless people in rural areas. The aim of the present study is to elicit health-care beliefs, and examine overall health experience among a sample of current or recently homeless people in rural New Hampshire. Thirteen qualitative interviews were conducted, 11 with single men. Interviews were audio-recorded and transcribed, and analyzed using thematic analysis. Despite a massive burden of disease and illness, almost all participants reported an abiding aversion to doctors, hospitals and professional health c

A population-based study of factors associated with early versus late stage oral cavity cancer diagnoses.

Oral cavity cancers can be detected early yet many are diagnosed with advanced disease. We assessed risk factors for advanced stage disease in a population-based study. Study population was all Ontario patients with anterior tongue or floor of mouth cancers diagnosed between 1991 and 2000 (n=2033). Data are from a retrospective chart review. Risk factors included: demographic characteristics, co-morbidity, precancerous lesions, dental status, smoking, alcohol use, and social marginalization. Multivariate regression analyses assessed independent associations while controlling for disease grade

The relationship of home smoking bans to the physical and mental health of smokers.

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study is to examine whether the adoption of home smoking bans is associated with the physical and mental health of smokers. Two potential pathways that link home smoking bans to smoker's health are analyzed. The first argues that home smoking bans are positively related to physical health by encouraging smoking cessation while reducing daily cigarette consumption. The second suggests that home smoking bans have a negative relationship to smokers' mental health by increasing marginalization and social isolation. METHODS: Data on 28,887 Canadian smokers were analyz

Effects of Minority Stress, Group-Level Coping, and Social Support on Mental Health of German Gay Men.

OBJECTIVE: According to epidemiological studies, gay men are at a higher risk of mental disorders than heterosexual men. In the current study, the minority stress theory was investigated in German gay men: 1) it was hypothesized that minority stressors would positively predict mental health problems and that 2) group-level coping and social support variables would moderate these predictions negatively. METHODS: Data from 1,188 German self-identified gay men were collected online. The questionnaire included items about socio-demographics, minority stress (victimization, rejection sensitivity,

Differences in overdose deaths by intent: Unintentional & suicide drug poisonings in North Carolina, 2015-2019.

Comprehensive fatal overdose prevention requires an understanding of the fundamental causes and context surrounding drug overdose. Using a social determinants of health (SDOH) framework, this descriptive study examined unintentional and self-inflicted (i.e., suicide) overdose deaths in North Carolina (NC), focusing on specific drug involvement and contextual factors. Unintentional and suicide overdose deaths were identified using 2015-2019 NC death certificate data. Specific drug involvement was assessed by searching literal text fields for drug mentions. County-level contextual factors were o
