Primary chest wall tumors are rare and represent a challenging clinical entity. Preoperative work-up includes a thorough history, radiographic imaging, and a biopsy approach that does not make a future definitive resection more difficult. Treatment decisions are based on tumor histology, stage, local aggressiveness, and responsiveness to chemotherapy and radiation. Wide excision is the foundation of treatment of most malignant primary chest wall tumors. The role of radiation therapy in the neoadjuvant or adjuvant setting is to reduce local recurrence. The use of adjuvant chemotherapy is more c

Alveolar soft part sarcoma is a rare neoplasm of uncertain histogenesis that belongs to a newly defined category of ultra-rare sarcomas. The neoplasm is characterized by a specific chromosomal translocation, der (17) t(X; 17)(p11.2;q25), that results in ASPSCR1-TFE3 gene fusion. The natural history of alveolar soft part sarcoma describes indolent behaviour with slow progression in deep soft tissues of the extremities, trunk and head/neck in adolescents and young adults. A high rate of detection of distant metastasis at presentation has been reported, and the most common metastatic sites in dec

Minor salivary gland neoplasms with mesenchymal-like features are uncommon in the sinonasal tract. We herein report a case of spindle cell myoepithelioma of the nasal cavity in a 69-year-old woman who presented with a rapidly expanding tumor accompanied by episodes of epistaxis. Although initially considered as a mesenchymal neoplasm, ultrastructural and immunophenotypical characterization demonstrated its myoepithelial nature. In the sinonasal setting, this unusual neoplasm may be confused with soft tissue tumors showing spindle cell or myxoid features. Staining for cytokeratin is found to be

The likely first question to ask when encountering a soft tissue tumor for the first time is simply, "Is this carcinoma or sarcoma?" Lesions of unknown etiology should also nearly always include melanoma as a differential diagnosis due to its greatly elusive nature, and this case report reinforces the importance of also keeping a lymphoproliferative process at the forefront of one's mind while considering the possible overlapping features with other entities. We present a 64-year-old man with a soft tissue mass of the supraspinatus that was perceived as an epithelioid angiosarcoma due to the l

BACKGROUND: Primary epithelioid angiosarcoma (EA) is an exceptionally rare malignant vascular tumor with aggressive behavior and nonspecific imaging features. Femoral involvement is particularly uncommon and may mimic other destructive bone neoplasms.
CASE REPORT: We describe two men with primary EA of the femur. One patient presented with progressive right hip pain and a pathological fracture of the proximal femur, whereas the other presented with progressively worsening pain in the distal left thigh. Imaging demonstrated destructive osteolytic lesions with intramedullary involvement and var

BACKGROUND: A mammary-type myofibroblastoma is a rare soft tumor; extramammary myofibroblastomas are especially rare.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 51-year-old woman presented to our department for evaluation of a mass on the right lower abdominal wall. The mass was then excised completely. Gross examination showed a huge, well-circumscribed soft tissue mass. The pathologic diagnosis was an extramammary myofibroblastoma. There was no recurrence after excision at the 6-month follow-up visit.
CONCLUSIONS: A mammary-type myofibroblastoma is a benign soft tissue neoplasm. No malignant behavior and/or rec

Malignant fibrous histiocytoma (MFH) and malignant histiocytosis (MH) are neoplasms with different histologic appearances and consequently a different putative cell of origin. Recently, the biopsy and necropsy services at the University of Pennsylvania have seen many canine soft tissue sarcomas that have the gross and histologic appearances of both MH and MFH within the same animal. A retrospective histologic evaluation of 263 cases diagnosed originally as either MH or MFH reclassified these neoplasms into 77 cases that were exclusively MH, 110 cases exclusively MFH, and 76 cases with features

A cartilaginous choristoma is a nonneoplastic nodular growth of histologically normal cartilage in an abnormal site. This report describes a case of a cartilaginous choristoma on the lateral surface of the tongue in a 65-year-old woman. The entire lesion was excised, and histologic examination revealed mature cartilaginous tissue surrounded by dense connective tissue. Choristomas are rare findings in the oral cavity, easily confused with proliferative processes or soft tissue neoplasms. Nevertheless, choristomas may be part of the differential diagnosis for lesions similar to the one described

Intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasms (IPMNs) are mucin-producing papillary neoplasms of the pancreatic or biliary ductal system that exhibit variable cellular atypia and cause ductal dilation. There are few reported cases of IPMN arising from the biliary tree in the literature. It has a higher propensity to undergo malignant transformation compared to IPMN arising from the pancreatic duct. An 80-year-old male underwent cross-sectional tomography (CT) imaging of the abdomen for evaluation of prostate adenocarcinoma, which revealed an incidental 2.3 × 2.7 cm soft tissue mass centered at the

INTRODUCTION: A soft tissue aneurysmal bone cyst is an extremely rare tumor. The objective of the article is to present the clinical, radiological, and histopathological features of a very unusual neoplasm of soft tissues.
CASE REPORT: A 13-year-old male patient presented a painful, mobile, and rapidly growing mass on the posteromedial aspect of his left knee. Imaging studies revealed a mass that arose from the medial surface of the distal sartorius muscle, with extension to the subcutaneous fat tissue. It was a well-circumscribed solid tumor with a peripheral rim calcification on plain film,

INTRODUCTION: Actinomycosis is known to mimic several types of neoplasms, leading to morbid surgical interventions.
PRESENTATION OF CASE: We report the particular case of an extensive right para-iliac actinomycetoma presenting as a sarcoma, which to our knowledge has not yet been described in the literature, in a patient with previous ruptured appendicitis. Thanks to the collaborative work between the orthopedic and general surgeons, pathologist and microbiologist, the diagnosis of actinomycosis was made pre-operatively, saving this 15-year-old patient from a tumor resection protocol.

Dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans (DFSP) is a rare soft tissue sarcoma originating from fibroblasts in the dermal connective tissue, comprising approximately 1% of all soft tissue sarcomas. While most cases involve the trunk and extremities, only 10%-15% occur in the cephalic region, representing less than 1% of all head and neck neoplasms. DFSP is notable for its high propensity for local recurrence following surgical excision and its low metastatic potential. We report a case of recurrent DFSP of the forehead extending to the anterior wall of the left frontal sinus, without brain involvement,

Chondroblastoma-like chondroma (CLC) of soft tissue is a rare benign neoplasm that usually involves the soft tissues of the hand. This report describes the first case of CLC of soft tissue arising in the base of the skull. A 33-year-old man was seen with a slow growing mass in the right parotid region of his face. The noncontrast computed tomographic scans showed an 8.5-cm mass with calcifications involving the right masticator space and extending through the bone into the middle cranial fossa. The radiologic differential diagnosis included osteosarcoma, leiomyosarcoma, chondrosarcoma, and gia

A case of primary adenocarcinoma of the umbilicus is reported along with a review of the literature and discussion of possible origins of glandular tissue within this area. Multiple connections are present within the umbilicus (vascular, lymphatic, and embryologic) that may give this area access to metastatic lesions. The primary tumors may originate within the usual umbilical tissue (skin and soft tissue). Glands that are not normally present in the region of the umbilicus rarely develop malignant neoplasms. As postulated, glandular tissue may arise either as metaplasia from squamous epitheli

Sarcomas comprise a heterogeneous group of mesenchymal neoplasms. They can be grouped into 2 general categories, soft tissue sarcoma and primary bone sarcoma, which have different staging and treatment approaches. This review includes a discussion of both soft tissue sarcomas (malignant fibrous histiocytoma, liposarcoma, leiomyosarcoma, synovial sarcoma, dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans, angiosarcoma, Kaposi sarcoma, gastrointestinal stromal tumor, aggressive fibromatosis or desmoid tumor, rhabdomyosarcoma, and primary alveolar soft-part sarcoma) and primary bone sarcomas (osteosarcoma, Ewing s

Heterotopic ossification (HO) within tissues involved by a pathologic process is a well-recognized phenomenon. It is most frequently observed in atherosclerotic plaques, in soft tissue around joints, and in the central nervous system. Less frequently, carcinomas and some benign neoplasms will undergo heterotopic ossification. We performed a retrospective review of our experience with HO over a 10-year period to determine the frequency and tissue site distribution of heterotopic ossification. A computerized review of surgical pathology records of approximately 126,000 reports revealed 85 cases

The authors describe a patient with recurrent perineurioma arising in the subcutaneous tissue of the dorsal forearm and extending along the forearm fascia. Soft tissue perineurioma is a rare, originally benign peripheral nerve sheath neoplasm arising from the perineurium, a protective cell barrier surrounding the individual fascicles in peripheral nerves. Perineurioma has only recently been recognized as an entity distinct from other nerve sheath tumors, such as schwannoma and neurofibroma, with unique morphologic, ultrastructural, and immunoreactive features. The recurrent tumor had converted

Surgical oncology is experiencing rapid transition in veterinary medicine. Mast cell tumors and soft tissue sarcomas are two of the most common neoplasms in small animal patients. Clinicians should be familiar with the need for staging and the procedures involved in treating patients with these tumors. Clinicians should be comfortable with available adjuvant therapies and when to use them in certain patients.

Glomus tumors are uncommon benign perivascular neoplasms that have rarely been described outside of their usual peripheral soft tissue sites. We report a unique case of glomus tumor of the renal pelvis in a 53-year-old woman who presented with microscopic hematuria associated with obstruction of the ureteropelvic junction and marked hydronephrosis. At initial gross examination, the tumor mimicked a urothelial carcinoma.

A diverse group of the pathologic process can produce the enlargement of soft tissues in the oral cavity and often present a diagnostic challenge. This soft tissue enlargement may represent a variation of the normal anatomic structure, inflammatory reaction, cyst, neoplasm, and developmental anomalies. A group of reactive hyperplasias, which develop in response to chronic recurring tissue injury that stimulates an excessive tissue repair response.
