Study on the Falling Characteristics of Interstitial Insolubles and the Brine Flow Field Response in Salt Cavity Reservoirs Considering Particle-Fluid Interactions.

During the formation of cavities through water dissolution in salt cavern storage facilities or during gas injection and production operations, insoluble particles in the interlayers may detach from the surrounding rock and collapse, thereby causing significant changes in the flow patterns of brine and gas within the cavities. To this end, the accuracy of the OpenFOAM-LIGGGHTS (LAMMPS Improved for General Granular and Granular Heat Transfer Simulations) coupling method was verified using simulations of particle free settling in water. Simulation results are in good agreement with theoretical v

Microgravity Modulates Effects of Chemotherapeutic Drugs on Cancer Cell Migration.

Microgravity or the condition of apparent weightlessness causes bone, muscular and immune system dysfunctions in astronauts following spaceflights. These organ and system-level dysfunctions correlate with changes induced at the single cell level both by simulated microgravity on earth as well as microgravity conditions in outer space (as in the international space station). Reported changes in single bone cells, muscle cells and white blood cells include structural/morphological abnormalities, changes in gene expression, protein expression, metabolic pathways and signaling pathways, suggesting

Mapping the dynamic repertoire of the resting brain.

The resting state dynamics of the brain shows robust features of spatiotemporal pattern formation but the actual nature of its time evolution remains unclear. Computational models propose specific state space organization which defines the dynamic repertoire of the resting brain. Nevertheless, methods devoted to the characterization of the organization of brain state space from empirical data still lack and thus preclude comparison of the hypothetical dynamical repertoire of the brain with the actual one. We propose here an algorithm based on set oriented approach of dynamical system to extrac

Existence of Dynamic Functional Connectivity Variations of Brain Networks in Psychogenic Non-Epileptic Seizures Through Resting-state Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging.

BACKGROUND: Long-duration space missions expose astronauts to hazardous radiation, including Galactic Cosmic Rays (GCRs) and Solar Particle Events (SPEs), producing secondary neutrons that penetrate spacecraft. Traditional aluminum shielding is inefficient and generates secondary particles, necessitating lightweight, multifunctional composites for effective radiation protection. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to optimize neutron shielding composites using Cadmium (Cd) and Lithium (Li) compounds within an Unsaturated Polyester Resin (UPS) matrix, targeting maximum attenuation of fast and thermal n

Accurate ensemble molecular dynamics binding free energy ranking of multidrug-resistant HIV-1 proteases.

Accurate calculation of important thermodynamic properties, such as macromolecular binding free energies, is one of the principal goals of molecular dynamics simulations. However, single long simulation frequently produces incorrectly converged quantitative results due to inadequate sampling of conformational space in a feasible wall-clock time. Multiple short (ensemble) simulations have been shown to explore conformational space more effectively than single long simulations, but the two methods have not yet been thermodynamically compared. Here we show that, for end-state binding free energy

A parallel non-nested two-level domain decomposition method for simulating blood flows in cerebral artery of stroke patient.

Numerical simulation of blood flows in patient-specific arteries can be useful for the understanding of vascular diseases, as well as for surgery planning. In this paper, we simulate blood flows in the full cerebral artery of stroke patients. To accurately resolve the flow in this rather complex geometry with stenosis is challenging and it is also important to obtain the results in a short amount of computing time so that the simulation can be used in pre- and/or post-surgery planning. For this purpose, we introduce a highly scalable, parallel non-nested two-level domain decomposition method f

Numerical Simulation of Fracture Propagation during Temporary Plugging Staged Fracturing in Tight-Oil Horizontal Wells.

Fracture propagation with temporary plugging hydraulic fracturing in tight-oil reservoirs is simulated in this study. The research considers dynamic fluid redistribution, with stress differences among multiple fractures. The fracture morphology during temporary plugging staged fracturing (TPSF) is investigated by using a user-defined perforation element combined with a pore-pressure finite-element model. The precision of the integrated model is verified by using the standard finite-element approach. Then, case studies are presented to investigate the influence of cluster spacing, horizontal st

Numerical simulation on transient electromagnetic response of separation layer water in coal seam roof.

Mining stress induces deformation and fracture of the overlaying rock, which will result in water filling the separation layer if the aquifer finds access to abscission space along the fracture channels. Accurate detection is crucial to prevent water hazards induced by water-bearing fractures. The 3-D time-domain finite-difference method with Yee's grid was adopted to calculate full-space transient electromagnetic response; meanwhile, a typical geologic and geophysical model with a water-bearing block in an separation layer was built according to regional tectonics and stratigraphic developmen

An accurate method for measuring knee joint space width despite variations in beam projection angles.

BACKGROUND: Assessing knee osteoarthritis (OA) severity through joint space width (JSW) measurements can be difficult due to anatomical variations, beam projection angle (BPA) errors, and patient posture during X-rays. Although various methods address these issues, a consensus on the reference point for accurate measurement is lacking. Therefore, establishing a precise evaluation method for JSW is imperative. METHODS: Simulation on 30 knees with advanced OA to measure the JSW using digital reconstruction radiographs from computed tomography (CT) images was conducted. The distance between the

Tuning Minimum-Norm regularization parameters for optimal MEG connectivity estimation.

The accurate characterization of cortical functional connectivity from Magnetoencephalography (MEG) data remains a challenging problem due to the subjective nature of the analysis, which requires several decisions at each step of the analysis pipeline, such as the choice of a source estimation algorithm, a connectivity metric and a cortical parcellation, to name but a few. Recent studies have emphasized the importance of selecting the regularization parameter in minimum norm estimates with caution, as variations in its value can result in significant differences in connectivity estimates. A framework for modeling the growth and development of neurons and networks.

The development of neural tissue is a complex organizing process, in which it is difficult to grasp how the various localized interactions between dividing cells leads relentlessly to global network organization. Simulation is a useful tool for exploring such complex processes because it permits rigorous analysis of observed global behavior in terms of the mechanistic axioms declared in the simulated model. We describe a novel simulation tool, CX3D, for modeling the development of large realistic neural networks such as the neocortex, in a physical 3D space. In CX3D, as in biology, neurons ari

Biomarker Preservation in Antarctic Sandstones after Prolonged Space Exposure Outside the International Space Station During the ESA EXPOSE-E Lichens and Fungi Experiment.

A primary aim of current and future space exploration missions is the detection and identification of chemical and biological indicators of life, namely biomarkers, on Mars. The Mars Sample Return NASA-ESA program will bring to Earth samples of martian soil, acquired from up to 7 cm depth. The ESA Rosalind Franklin rover will search for signs of life in the subsurface (down to a depth of 2 meters), given the highly radioactive conditions on Mars' surface, which are not ideal for life as we know it and for the preservation of its traces. In the frame of the Lichens and Fungi Experiment, small f

Relative Motion Estimation Algorithm for Noncooperative Targets Considering Multiple Solutions of Rotational Parameters.

On-orbit servicing using a space robot is gaining popularity among the space community for both economic and safety aspects. In particular, the estimation of the relative motion of a noncooperative target is a challenging problem. This study presents a relative motion estimation scheme based on stereovision for noncooperative targets considering multiple solutions of rotational parameters. Specifically, the mass distribution of the target is identified based on the least-square method and the principle of conservation of angular momentum. Then, the determination of a unique principal axis coor

Biomechanical analysis of three techniques of suspensionplasty after trapeziectomy: a cadaveric study.

The aim of the present cadaveric study was to assess resistance to first metacarpal subsidence of three techniques of suspensionplasty after trapeziectomy. In total, 18 forearms (mean age 60 years [range 20-89]) were used with six specimens per surgical technique: palmar oblique ligament reconstruction with tendon interposition (LRTI), abductor pollicis longus (APL) suspensionplasty, or suture suspensionplasty. There was no significant difference in mean trapezial space height after trapeziectomy and suspensionplasty compared to the preoperative trapezial height. However, after simulation of p

Simulation and analysis of variable numerical aperture wide-field microscopy for telecentricity with constant resolution.

In this work, we propose simulation and analysis of a novel combination of a variable numerical aperture wide-field microscope objective with an Electrically Tunable Lens (ETL) for axial scanning with a telecentric image space. This work resolves the challenges of the conventional ETL based wide-field microscopic systems viz. variable magnification, field-of-view (FOV), an inconsistent lateral and axial resolution. The proposed combination performs the tuning of the object plane by changing ETL current and effectively modifies the object space numerical aperture using an aperture controller to

Contact forces in the subacromial space: effects of scapular orientation.

The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of scapular orientation on clearance in the subacromial space. Eight glenohumeral joints from fresh-frozen human cadavers were secured to an Instron mechanical testing machine via a custom-made translation table. Forces were applied to simulate rotator cuff and deltoid contraction. Superior translation of the glenohumeral joint was simulated, and the distance before the development of significant subacromial contact force was measured. Specimens were tested at varying orientations of scapular posterior tilting, upward rotation, and external

Kinetics of Drug Release from Clay Using Enhanced Sampling Methods.

A key step in the development of a new drug, is the design of drug-excipient complexes that lead to optimal drug release kinetics. Computational chemistry and specifically enhanced sampling molecular dynamics methods can play a key role in this context, by minimizing the need for expensive experiments, and reducing cost and time. Here we show that recent advances in enhanced sampling methodologies can be brought to fruition in this area. We demonstrate the potential of these methodologies by simulating the drug release kinetics of the complex praziquantel-montmorillonite in water. Praziquantel

How to Conduct Usability Testing of Medical Education Simulations: Methods Tutorial Using a Telemedicine Simulation for Maternal Care.

BACKGROUND: Clinical educators regularly use simulation-based education to help learners develop clinical reasoning, procedural skills, and communication strategies. However, differences between simulated and live clinical environments, such as missing case details or workflow interruptions, can reduce realism and divert learners' attention from the intended learning goals. While published design guidelines recommend pilot testing simulations, they do not explain how to systematically identify usability problems. Human factors evaluation methods can address this gap by identifying issues befor
