The medial frontal cortex contributes to but does not organize rat exploratory behavior.

Animals use multiple strategies to maintain spatial orientation. Dead reckoning is a form of spatial navigation that depends on self-movement cue processing. During dead reckoning, the generation of self-movement cues from a starting position to an animal's current position allow for the estimation of direction and distance to the position movement originated. A network of brain structures has been implicated in dead reckoning. Recent work has provided evidence that the medial frontal cortex may contribute to dead reckoning in this network of brain structures. The current study investigated th

Hidden Markov models reveal behavioral state dynamics in depth-related locomotion in mice.

Understanding how mice process and respond to visual depth cues is crucial for studying visual perception, yet traditional behavioral analyses often miss key aspects of this process, such as the dynamic transitions between behavioral states and the integration of multiple spatial cues that shape depth-related behaviors. Here we demonstrate that mouse responses to visual depth cues are more sophisticated than previously recognized, involving both direct avoidance behaviors and complex modulations of exploratory patterns. By combining a modified circular apparatus with Hidden Markov Model analys

Sluggish dorsally-driven inhibition of return during orthographic processing in adults with dyslexia.

Dyslexia (D) is a neurodevelopmental reading disorder characterized by phonological and orthographic deficits. Before phonological decoding, reading requires a specialized orthographic system for parallel letter processing that assigns letter identities to different spatial locations. The magnocellular-dorsal (MD) stream rapidly process the spatial location of visual stimuli controlling visuo-spatial attention. To investigate the visuo-spatial attention efficiency during orthographic processing, inhibition of return (IOR) was measured in adults with and without D in a lexical decision task. IO

privateST: a feasible framework for privacy-preserving spatial transcriptomics prediction from histopathology images.

Predicting spatial transcriptomics from histology images offers cost-effective insights but faces privacy barriers preventing cross-institutional data sharing. To address this, we present privateST, a homomorphic-encryption-optimized framework that substantiates the feasibility of secure spatial transcriptomics prediction. To accommodate the computational constraints of homomorphic encryption, we downsampled the input images using bilinear interpolation. To improve prediction accuracy for the 100 target genes, we incorporated predictions for an auxiliary set of 150 highly expressed genes. This

Alpha Oscillations Are Involved in Localizing Touch on Handheld Tools.

The population of kisspeptin neurons located in the rostral periventricular area of the third ventricle (RP3V) is thought to have a key role in generating the GnRH surge that triggers ovulation. Using a modified GCaMP fibre photometry procedure, we have been able to record the in vivo population activity of RP3VKISS neurons across the estrous cycle of female mice. A marked increase in GCaMP activity was detected beginning on the afternoon of proestrus that lasted in total for 13±1 hr. This was comprised of slow baseline oscillations with a period of 91±4 min associated with high-frequency rapi

Spontaneous synchronization of motion in pedestrian crowds of different densities.

Interacting pedestrians in a crowd spontaneously adjust their footsteps and align their respective stepping phases. This self-organization phenomenon is known as synchronization. However, it is unclear why and how synchronization forms spontaneously under different density conditions, or what functional benefit synchronization offers for the collective motion of humans. Here, we conducted a single-file crowd motion experiment that directly tracked the alternating movement of both legs of interacting pedestrians. We show that synchronization is most likely to be triggered at the same density at

Halo: a pretrained model for whole-cell segmentation from nuclei images in spatial transcriptomics.

Spatial transcriptomics (ST) enables measurement of gene expression while preserving spatial organization within tissues. Accurate reconstruction of single-cell transcriptomes requires precise whole-cell segmentation, yet many ST experiments provide only nuclear staining images, making reliable inference of cell boundaries difficult. Here we introduce Halo, a pretrained segmentation model that reconstructs whole-cell boundaries by integrating nuclear morphology with the spatial distribution of RNA transcripts. Halo converts transcript coordinates into molecular density maps that are processed

Covert spatial attention is functionally intact in amblyopic human adults.

Certain abnormalities in behavioral performance and neural signaling have been attributed to a deficit of visual attention in amblyopia, a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by a diverse array of visual deficits following abnormal binocular childhood experience. Critically, most have inferred attention's role in their task without explicitly manipulating and measuring its effects against a baseline condition. Here, we directly investigate whether human amblyopic adults benefit from covert spatial attention-the selective processing of visual information in the absence of eye movements-to

Novel FFPE proteomics method suggests prolactin induced protein as hormone induced cytoskeleton remodeling spatial biomarker.

Robotically assisted proteomics provides insights into the regulation of multiple proteins achieving excellent spatial resolution. However, developing an effective method for spatially resolved quantitative proteomics of formalin fixed paraffin embedded tissue (FFPE) in an accessible and economical manner remains challenging. We introduce non-robotic In-insert FFPE proteomics approach, combining glass insert FFPE tissue processing with spatial quantitative data-independent mass spectrometry (DIA). In-insert approach identifies 450 proteins from a 5 µm thick breast FFPE tissue voxel with 50 µm

Cognitive profile of adolescents with math disabilities: are the profiles different from those with reading disabilities?

Adolescents (ages 14-17) with math disabilities (MD, n=12), reading disabilities (RD, n=19), math+reading disabilities (MD+RD, n=12), and average achievers (n=15) were compared on measures of visual-spatial processing, random generation (inhibition), writing speed, short-term memory (STM), and working memory (WM). Adolescents with MD performed significantly lower than adolescents with RD on measures of visual-spatial processing and visual WM. Adolescents with MD outperformed adolescents with RD +MD on measures of random generation and motor speed. Performance of all three low-achieving groups

"Sequence Agnosia" in Bálint's syndrome: defects in visuotemporal processing after bilateral parietal damage.

Bálint's syndrome is characterized by visuospatial dysfunction, with failure to attend to multiple objects in space and poor spatial localization manifested as impaired reaching and saccadic targeting. Less investigated in this disorder is perceptual processing along the dimension of time. We studied the performance of a patient with Bálint's syndrome on two oddity paradigms in which she had to indicate which of three objects was different in color, shape, or structure. Her initial difficulty with processing multiple objects present simultaneously in different locations recovered, but she had

Evaluation of image quality in conventional intraoral radiographs acquired with a stationary intraoral tomosynthesis system.

PURPOSE: To objectively evaluate the image quality of conventional two-dimensional intraoral radiographs acquired with a stationary intraoral tomosynthesis (s-IOT) system under different tube voltage settings and post-processing adjustments. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-four radiographs of an acrylic-block phantom were obtained using a s-IOT system coupled to a size-2 CMOS sensor, with standardized exposure parameters (7 mA and 0.16 seconds of exposure) under two conditions: two tube voltages (60 and 70 kVp) and, with ("current image") and without ("current frame") post-processing image expo

Dissociable effects of psychopathic traits on cortical and subcortical visual pathways during facial emotion processing: an ERP study on the N170.

This study examined the relation between psychopathic traits and the brain response to facial emotion by analyzing the N170 component of the ERP. Fifty-four healthy participants were assessed for psychopathic traits and exposed to images of emotional and neutral faces with varying spatial frequency content. The N170 was modulated by the emotional expressions, irrespective of psychopathic traits. Fearless dominance was associated with a reduced N170, driven by the low spatial frequency components of the stimuli, and dependent on the tectopulvinar visual pathway. Conversely, coldheartedness was

HRNB factors with simultaneous-successive marker variables.

The Halstead-Reitan neuropsychological Battery (HRNB) was factor-analyzed along with a simultaneous and successive processing index form, the WISC-R. Using 970 learning disabled children, a four factor solution was found to represent the underlying structure best. The factors included: (1) Simple Motor, (2) Tactile-Kinesthesis with simultaneous processing demands, (3) Memory/Attention with interpretable loading on the successive processing index, and (4) Noverbal Visual-Spatial Memory with simultaneous processing demands.

The Processing Stages for Social Interaction Recognition.

Understanding a social interaction requires-at least-the recognition of social agents (i.e., people), their individual actions, and the relationship between them. In what sequence do these processing steps occur? In three behavioral experiments (n = 184), we presented visual scenes showing bodies (or sometimes chairs), in spatial relations that implied interaction (face-to-face) or not (back-to-back), and in postures that suggested different types of interactions (i.e., 'fighting' or 'dancing'). We presented these scenes for different time-durations (17, 33, 50, 67, 167 ms) followed by masking

Evidence for participation by object-selective visual cortex in scene category judgments.

Scene recognition is a core function of the visual system, drawing both on scenes' intrinsic global features, prominently their spatial properties, and on the identities of the objects scenes contain. Neuroimaging and neuropsychological studies have associated spatial property-based scene categorization with parahippocampal cortex, while processing of scene-relevant object information is associated with the lateral occipital complex (LOC), wherein activity patterns distinguish between categories of standalone objects and those embedded in scenes. However, despite the importance of objects to s

Spatial Attention Weakly Modulates Visual Responses in the Lateral Geniculate Nucleus.

Visual responses in the cortex are strongly influenced by shifts in spatial attention. This modulation of visual processing includes changes in firing rate, decreased response variability, and decreased interneuronal correlations; all of which are thought to underlie enhanced perception near the center of attention at the cost of perception at other locations. Information from the retina is relayed to primary visual cortex via neurons in the lateral geniculate nucleus (LGN) of the thalamus. Although early studies describe an enhancement of LGN activity with spatial attention, more recent work

Dyslexics are impaired on implicit higher-order sequence learning, but not on implicit spatial context learning.

Developmental dyslexia is characterized by poor reading ability and impairments on a range of tasks including phonological processing and processing of sensory information. Some recent studies have found deficits in implicit sequence learning using the serial reaction time task, but others have not. Other skills, such as global visuo-spatial processing may even be enhanced in dyslexics, although deficits have also been noted. The present study compared dyslexic and non-dyslexic college students on two implicit learning tasks, an alternating serial response time task in which sequential depende

A two-phase diffusion process account of cross-location conflict processing during mental imagery.

The conflict processing mechanisms in mental imagery within one spatial location have been conceptualized by the dual-stage two-phase model. However, whether and how such conflicts operate across disparate locations remains unknown. Using a mental-rotation flanker task with central and flanking gaze judgments, we observed a decrease in the imagery conflict effect with larger rotation angles. Cross-experiment analyses revealed enhanced foveal than peripheral processing, modulated by rotation angle. Hierarchical Bayesian conflict drift-diffusion modeling identified a two-phase imagery conflict m

Functional reallocation of sensory processing resources caused by long-term neural adaptation to altered optics.

The eye's optics are a major determinant of visual perception. Elucidating how long-term exposure to optical defects affects visual processing is key to understanding the capacity for, and limits of, sensory plasticity. Here, we show evidence of functional reallocation of sensory processing resources following long-term exposure to poor optical quality. Using adaptive optics to bypass all optical defects, we assessed visual processing in neurotypically-developed adults with healthy eyes and with keratoconus - a corneal disease causing severe optical aberrations. Under fully-corrected optical c
