Inductively coupled plasma - mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) analysis of airborne particulate bound mercury was carried out utilizing a high sulfur containing organic compound as a preservation agent to limit the negative bias that affects the determination of low levels of mercury. Between 600% and 1000% more Hg was detected with the use of the additive, lithium tetrathiafulvalene carboxylate (LiCTTF), during the microwave assisted acid digestion sample processing step without influencing the determination of other trace elements. The objectives of this study were to evaluate some of the popular rotation crops grown in Hungary for tolerance to low external Mn(2+) levels and to determine the critical tissue concentration of Mn(2+) deficiency during early stages of growth. Two groups of samples spanning 16 years are reported for methylmercury and total mercury. All the samples had been taken from commercial catches and represent 33 different commercially important New Zealand marine fish species. Results show the New Zealand fish species sampled have mean contents of total mercury that range between 0.02 and 2.48 mg kg(-1) and mean contents of methylmercury that range from less than 0.04 to 1.97 mg kg(-1).

To study quantitatively the mineral elements in the vertebral column, we examined the vertebrae and intervertebral discs resected from three normal cadavers which died at middle age, by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry. The relative contents of calcium, phosphorus, and sodium in vertebrae were high in the order from cervical to lumbar vertebrae. The bioavailability of carcinogenic compounds plays an important role in the process of oncogenesis. Chromium in its hexavalent oxidation state is classified as carcinogen to humans. Tin speciation in aquatic environment is very complex. To the natural SnIV and methylated compounds, human activities add mainly butylated, octylated, phenylated or even methylated derivatives. The most environmentally significant, due to their high toxicity and direct introduction in water through biocidal use, are the trisubstituted ones. Several sophisticated speciation procedures have been proposed, they are not susceptible of common use. We propose a simple and fast procedure allowing routine global distinction of "heavy" tin species that are most susceptible of exerting harmful effects.

The relationship between serum transferrin ( TFN ) and serum total iron-binding capacity (TIBC) in a clinical setting was evaluated in two related studies. The initial study evaluated 101 blood samples representing a cross-section of hospitalized adults. The samples were double assayed for TIBC using clinical and research methodologies. TFN was assayed by a commercial radial immunodiffusion method.
