Preliminary studies of the application of near infrared spectroscopy in the diagnosis of deep vein thrombosis.

A feasibility study for diagnosing deep vein thrombosis utilizing near-infrared continuous wave spectroscopy was performed, as a real-time, non-invasive, and inexpensive method. The probe contains two light sources and two detectors with optical filters that monitor reflected light at wavelengths 760 and 850 nm to measure the changes in the amount of deoxyhemoglobin and oxyhemoglobin, respectively. These changes and the blood volume changes are recorded while the subject performs a series of light leg exercises. The test protocol is designed to determine the muscle tissue blood volume capacity

Defining thresholds for critical ischemia by using near-infrared spectroscopy in the adult brain.

OBJECT: Signal changes in adult extracranial tissues may have a profound effect on cerebral near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) measurements. During carotid surgery NIRS signals provide the opportunity to determine the relative contributions from the intra- and extracranial vascular territories, allowing for a more accurate quantification. In this study the authors applied multimodal monitoring methods to patients undergoing carotid endarterectomy and explored the hypothesis that NIRS can define thresholds for cerebral ischemia, provided extracranial NIRS signal changes are identified and remove

Near-infrared spectroscopy in experimental pneumococcal meningitis in the rabbit: cerebral hemodynamics and metabolism.

Near-infrared spectroscopy is a noninvasive technique which measures oxidized cytochrome aa3, oxygenated Hb, and deoxygenated Hb and calculates total Hb in tissue. This technique, in conjunction with measurement of cerebral blood flow, was used in rabbits with experimental bacterial meningitis to determine whether there was evidence for cerebral energy depletion and alterations in the cerebral vascular bed with infection. Rabbits with meningitis had a significant reduction in cerebral blood flow, cerebral oxidized cytochrome aa3 and a relative increase in the deoxygenated Hb fraction and a dec

Muscle metabolism in patients with polymyositis simultaneously evaluated by using 31P-magnetic resonance spectroscopy and near-infrared spectroscopy.

Simultaneous measurements of muscle energy metabolism using (31)P-magnetic resonance spectroscopy ((31)P-MRS) and the kinetics of muscular oxygen metabolism using near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) were conducted in polymyositis (PM) patients. The subjects were 12 PM patients (age 45 +/- 12 years) and 12 normal controls (age 41 +/- 12 years). The muscle phosphocreatine (PCr) index and intracellular pH (pHi) were determined with (31)P-MRS and the changes in intramuscular oxygenated (oxy-Hb), deoxygenated (deoxy-Hb), and total haemoglobin (total Hb) were evaluated with NIRS . The pHi and PCr inde

Commonality and specificity of acupuncture tonifying-reducing manipulations based on functional near-infrared spectroscopy.

BACKGROUND: Acupuncture tonifying-reducing manipulations (TRMs) are typically classified into tonifying manipulations (TMs) and reducing manipulations (RMs) according to their tonifying and reducing effects, and further subdivided into single and complex TRMs based on the different amount of stimulation applied. Different TRMs can produce different therapeutic effects, so distinguishing different TRMs is important for precise acupuncture treatment. OBJECTIVE: This study investigated the specificity and commonality of brain responses induced by TRMs in terms of both the different effects of ac

Towards recycling of textiles: fast detection of contaminated waste fabric by near-infrared spectroscopy.

Since the implementation of EU Waste Framework Directive, which mandates the separate collection of textile waste from 2025 onwards, there has been an increasing need for effective systems for textile waste collection, sorting, and recycling, together with reliable approaches to assess the chemical safety of textile products. The present study explores near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy, combined with chemometric tools, proposed as a non-destructive rapid approach to identify the presence of contaminants on textile samples. Representative contaminants were applied to pre-consumer virgin polyeste

Functional near-infrared spectroscopy: Systematic mapping of abnormal brain function features in neurological disorders.

Functional near-infrared spectroscopy quantifies cerebral hemodynamic signals by capturing oxygenation-dependent changes in hemoglobin in a noninvasive, portable, and ecologically valid manner, providing a unique insight into neurovascular coupling. However, functional imaging biomarkers with high ecological validity for neurological disorders such as stroke, Parkinson's disease, dementia, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, epilepsy, spinal cord injury, and traumatic brain injury are lacking, limiting the mechanistic understanding, treatment evaluations, and individualized interventions. The aim o

Neonatal cerebral hemodynamics under elevated intracranial pressure: a near-infrared spectroscopy study in piglets.

BACKGROUND: Elevated intracranial pressure (ICP) is a common postnatal complication in premature infants, particularly those with very low birth weight, and it is associated with hemodynamic impairments. Continuous monitoring of cerebral blood flow (CBF) and oxygenation may enable early detection and inform clinical management. We hypothesized that non-invasive, bedside optical spectroscopy measurements of CBF and oxygenation are sensitive to abrupt increases in ICP. METHODS: A hybrid optical system combining broadband near-infrared spectroscopy (bNIRS) and diffuse correlation spectroscopy (D

Feasibility of Near-Infrared Spectroscopy for Monitoring Tissue Oxygenation During Uterus Transplantation and Hysterectomy.

Background/Objective: Thrombosis is the leading cause of graft failure and immediate hysterectomy following uterus transplantation (UTx). Currently, there is no standardized method for real-time assessment of UTx graft perfusion. This feasibility study aims to evaluate the utility of a near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) probe for non-invasive monitoring of local cervical tissue oxygenation (StO2) during UTx. As proof-of-concept for the NIRS device, cervical StO2 was also measured during non-donor hysterectomy and bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy to establish its capacity to reflect perfusion cha

Unveiling the sensorimotor basis of numerical processing: A functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) study.

Interactions between number processing and hand grasping have been extensively studied; however, the specific neural mechanisms underlying these interactions remain elusive. In this study, healthy adults (N = 30) performed number magnitude comparison and hand grasping, both paired with stringent control conditions (color naming and squeezing, respectively). Hemodynamic activity in the cortical networks associated with number processing and hand action was recorded using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS). Significant hemodynamic activity was observed during both number comparison an

Multimodal Integration of EEG and Near-Infrared Spectroscopy for Robust Cross-Frequency Coupling Estimation.

Neuroimaging techniques have had a major impact on medical science, allowing advances in the research of many neurological diseases and improving their diagnosis. In this context, multimodal neuroimaging approaches, based on the neurovascular coupling phenomenon, exploit their individual strengths to provide complementary information on the neural activity of the brain cortex. This work proposes a novel method for combining electroencephalography (EEG) and functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) to explore the functional activity of the brain processes related to low-level language proce

Using Near-Infrared Spectroscopy Wearable Devices to Identify Central Versus Peripheral Limitations During Exercise.

The gold standard to assess the aerobic capacity in physically active subjects and athletes is the maximal oxygen consumption test (VO2-max), which involves analysis of exhaled-gases and cardiorespiratory variables obtained via the breath-by-breath method in an ergospirometer during an incremental exercise. However, this method cannot elucidate metabolic changes at the muscular level. Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) has emerged as a valuable technology to evaluate local oxygen levels (Tissular Saturation Index, TSI) by quantifying the concentrations of oxygenated (O2-Hb) and deoxygenated (H-

Near-Infrared Spectroscopy Allows for Monitoring of Bone Fracture Healing via Changes in Oxygenation.

Bone fractures are associated with hypoxia, but no longitudinal studies of perfusion measurements in human patients have been reported despite the clinical and research potential. In this longitudinal observational cohort study, the near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) device PortaMon was used to assess oxy-(O2Hb), deoxy-(HHb) and total (tHb) haemoglobin, as well as the differences between O2Hb and HHb (HbDiff) and the tissue saturation index (TSI) at three different depths in the fracture gap. Linear mixed effect models were fitted to analyse time effects. One-way ANOVAs were conducted to compar

Associations between circulating microRNAs and lipid-rich coronary plaques measured with near-infrared spectroscopy.

Lipid-rich coronary atherosclerotic plaques often cause myocardial infarction (MI), and circulating biomarkers that reflect lipid content may predict risk of MI. We investigated the association between circulating microRNAs (miRs) are lipid-rich coronary plaques in 47 statin-treated patients (44 males) with stable coronary artery disease undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention. We assessed lipid content in non-culprit coronary artery lesions with near-infrared spectroscopy and selected the 4 mm segment with the highest measured lipid core burden index (maxLCBI4mm). Lipid-rich plaques wer

Wavelet Analysis of Cerebral Oxygenation Signal Measured by Near-Infrared Spectroscopy in Moyamoya Disease.

BACKGROUND: Spontaneous low-frequency oscillations (LFOs) have been widely studied in cerebrovascular disease, but little is known about their role in moyamoya disease (MMD). The objective of this study was to assess the value of spontaneous LFOs in MMD based on wavelet analysis of near-infrared spectroscopy signals. METHODS: Sixty-four consecutive idiopathic adult patients were prospectively enrolled. The regional tissue oxygenation index (TOI) obtained from continuous near-infrared spectroscopy signals. Five frequency intervals of spontaneous LFOs (I, 0.0095-0.02 Hz; II, 0.02-0.06 Hz; III,

Evaluation of portable near-infrared spectroscopy for authentication of mRNA based COVID-19 vaccines.

Since its identification in 2019, Covid-19 has spread to become a global pandemic. Until now, vaccination in its different forms proves to be the most effective measure to control the outbreak and lower the burden of the disease on healthcare systems. This arena has become a prime target to criminal networks that spread counterfeit Covid-19 vaccines across the supply chain mainly for profit. Counterfeit vaccines provide false sense of security to individuals, heightens the risk of exposure and outbreak of the virus, and increase the risk of harm linked to Covid-19 infection. Moreover, the incr
