[Speech visualization for evaluation of iatrogenic recurrent laryngeal nerve injuries].

A study was conducted to investigate the intra operative laryngeal recurrent nerve injury and subsequent vocal disturbances. The recovery of voice condition in group of 20 patients with unilateral laryngeal nerve injury was examined by the whole range of both presurgical and postsurgical tests. Patients were selected from a group a 1867 surgical treated in 3-rd Department of Surgery Jagiellonian University School of Medicine in years 1988-1993. We recorded and analysed 1100 words with identical acoustic test. The research was conucted in 3-4 days, 3 moths, 6 months and 1 year after operation i

Nucleus 22 cochlear implantation results in postmeningitic deafness.

Cochlear implant surgery was performed on 13 patients with postmeningitic deafness (seven adults, six children). Two adults and two children (30.8%) had severe labyrinthitis ossificans requiring radical "drill-out." Five of 13 (38.5%) had some bone growth requiring partial drill-out, and four of 13 (30.8%) had normal insertion with no drill-out. Hearing results for patients with no bone growth were similar to nonmeningitic patients; three of four (75%) had open-set speech recognition. Performance of patients with total drill-out was poor; "auditory only" performance was limited to detection an

An evaluation of speech audiometry by bone conduction in hearing-impaired adults.

Pure-tone thresholds, speech reception thresholds (SRT), and speech discrimination scores (DS) were obtained by ac and bc on 20 normal-hearing and 30 hearing-impaired adults. Correlations between the SRT and pure-tone thresholds (ave. of .5, 1, and 2 kc/s) were significant by both ac and bc. Correlations between DS by ac and bc were also highly significant, indicating the value of the bc DS in specific difficult cases. The clinical observation was confirmed statistically of decreasing DS with increasing sensorineural hearing loss.

Speech paired vagus nerve stimulation restores neural sound processing in a rat model of autism.

INTRODUCTION: Prenatal exposure to valproic acid (VPA) is a common environmental cause of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and often leads to expressive and receptive language impairments. Similar communication difficulties among individuals with ASD are often linked to abnormal subcortical and cortical sound processing. Rodents prenatally exposed to VPA exhibit degraded cortical responses to speech and an impaired ability to behaviorally discriminate speech sounds. METHODS: We sought to determine whether sound processing could be restored with paired vagus nerve stimulation (VNS). In a first e

Reproduction of inflectional markers in French-speaking children with reading impairment.

PURPOSE: Children with reading impairment (RI) experience difficulties in oral and written production of inflectional markers. The origin of these difficulties is not well documented in French. According to some authors, acquisition of irregular items by typically developing children is predicted by token frequency, whereas acquisition of regular items is predicted by type frequency. The authors hypothesized that acquisition of inflectional markers in French depends on the distribution of irregular, invariable, and regular (transparent) items within a grammatical category. METHOD: Fifteen chi

Prosodic preservation in Landau-Kleffner syndrome: a case report.

Landau-Kleffner syndrome (LKS) is a rare acquired condition of auditory verbal agnosia and convulsive disorder in children. It has been proposed that there is a functional relationship between electrical disturbance and the speech defect. Prosody or the melody of language, as described by Monrad-Krohn (1947), is one aspect of non-verbal communication which is distributed bilaterally in the brain. Prosodic parameters of expression and perception in one 7.5-year-old child were tested to see if they were preserved as a means of communication. The child was observed during video-electroencephalogr

Predictability of the glycerin test in the diagnosis of Ménière's disease.

The response of patients with suspected Ménière's disease to the glycerin test was reviewed in a prospective evaluation covering a 10 year period. Three hundred and eighty three patients with 495 suspect ears were tested and were classified as to hearing improvement 3 h post-orally administered glycerin. Two hundred twenty-five patients (265 ears) were diagnosed as Ménière's disease. Sixty-six percent of these ears showed significant hearing improvement by pure tone threshold and/or speech discrimination measurements with the glycerin test. The test protocol developed and revised at the Univer

Development and Evaluation of a Language-Independent Test of Auditory Discrimination for Referrals for Cochlear Implant Candidacy Assessment.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to (1) develop a Language-independent Test of Auditory Discrimination (LIT-AD) between speech sounds so that people with hearing loss who derive limited speech perception benefits from hearing aids (HAs) may be identified for consideration of cochlear implantation and (2) examine the relationship between the scores for the new discrimination test and those of a standard sentence test for adults wearing either HAs or cochlear implants (CIs). DESIGN: The test measures the ability of the listener to correctly discriminate pairs of nonsense syllables, pre

[Test construction, analysis and trial of the Heidelberg Sound Discrimination Test for measuring auditory-kinesthetic perceptual discrimination acuity].

The provisional trial was carried out in a sample of 133 second- and 139 fourth-graders from the Heidelberg area. The HD-LT was subjected to an item selection, test criteria were ascertained and temporary percentile norms for the second and fourth grades were established. High item difficulty resulted for both grades, i.e. the test was relatively easy. Test criteria were generally satisfactory. Significant correlations were found in both grades between the HD-LT and the children's spelling ability. The HD-LT accounted for 30% of the spelling variance among second-graders as compared to 10% of

Oral form identification as a measure of cortical sensory dysfunction in apraxia of speech and aphasia.

Oral form identification scores were obtained for nine anterior and nine posterior left-hemisphere brain lesion subjects exhibiting speech apraxic behavior and aphasia. An objective measure of speech apraxic difficulty and a standardized aphasia assessment were obtained for each subject. Despite the traditional association of a cortical sensory deficit including asterognosis in posterior brain-injured patients, oral form identification scores did not differ significantly for the two subject groups. However, a previously reported heterogeneity of performance was observed in the present data. Th

A case of isolated partial auditory agnosia associated with coiling of the left internal carotid artery.

A 64-year-old bilingual lawyer complained of an abrupt loss of comprehension of spoken words and much less severe loss of recognition of various sounds. An isolated partial auditory agnosia, due to a left-sided, temporal dysfunction was confirmed by the clinical neuropsychological and logopedic examination. Only a minimal left cortical, peri-insular hypodensity was suspected on CT-scan of the brain, while the NMR-scan was inconclusive. Arteriography showed a large coiling internal carotid artery on the left side, as a possible source of thrombo-embolism.

Improved tactile speech perception using audio-to-tactile sensory substitution with formant frequency focusing.

Haptic hearing aids, which provide speech information through tactile stimulation, could substantially improve outcomes for both cochlear implant users and for those unable to access cochlear implants. Recent advances in wide-band haptic actuator technology have made new audio-to-tactile conversion strategies viable for wearable devices. One such strategy filters the audio into eight frequency bands, which are evenly distributed across the speech frequency range. The amplitude envelopes from the eight bands modulate the amplitudes of eight low-frequency tones, which are delivered through vibra

Hearing a voice in the noise: auditory hallucinations and speech perception.

BACKGROUND: It has recently been suggested that auditory hallucinations are the result of a criterion shift when deciding whether or not a meaningful signal has emerged. The approach proposes that a liberal criterion may result in increased false-positive identifications, without additional perceptual deficit. To test this hypothesis, we devised a speech discrimination task and used signal detection theory (SDT) to investigate the underlying cognitive mechanisms. METHOD: Schizophrenia patients with and without auditory hallucinations and a healthy control group completed a speech discriminati

Clinical psychoacoustics in Alzheimer's disease central auditory processing disorders and speech deterioration.

BACKGROUND: Difficulty in speech understanding in the presence of background noise or competing auditory signals is typically present in central auditory processing disorders. These disorders may be diagnosed in Alzheimer's disease as a result of degeneration in the central auditory system. In addition perception and processing of speech may be affected. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A MEDLINE research was conducted in order to answer the question whether there is a central auditory processing disorder involved in Alzheimer's disease. A second question to be investigated was what, if any is the connec

Assessing the treatment effects in apraxia of speech: introduction and evaluation of the Modified Diadochokinesis Test.

BACKGROUND: The number of reliable and valid instruments to measure the effects of therapy in apraxia of speech (AoS) is limited. AIMS: To evaluate the newly developed Modified Diadochokinesis Test (MDT), which is a task to assess the effects of rate and rhythm therapies for AoS in a multiple baseline across behaviours design. METHODS: The consistency, accuracy and fluency of speech of 24 adults with AoS and 12 unaffected speakers matched for age, gender and educational level were assessed using the MDT. The reliability and validity of the instrument were considered and outcomes compared wit

Developmental Effects in Children's Ability to Benefit From F0 Differences Between Target and Masker Speech.

OBJECTIVES: The objectives of this study were to (1) evaluate the extent to which school-age children benefit from fundamental frequency (F0) differences between target words and competing two-talker speech, and (2) assess whether this benefit changes with age. It was predicted that while children would be more susceptible to speech-in-speech masking compared to adults, they would benefit from differences in F0 between target and masker speech. A second experiment was conducted to evaluate the relationship between frequency discrimination thresholds and the ability to benefit from target/maske
