PURPOSE: Stuttering therapy is complex, addressing speech, cognitive, affective, and social factors. Children who stutter often present with co-occurring speech and language disorders. Historically, speech-language pathologists (SLPs) have reported less comfort with stuttering treatment compared with other speech and language disorders. The current study used a combined quantitative and qualitative approach to investigate SLPs' perceptions of the therapy they provide to an individual child who stutters with one or more concomitant disorders on their caseload.
METHOD: Forty-five SLPs completed

BACKGROUND: Empathetic listening can be particularly challenging with patients presenting pressured speech, while time pressure and costs limit practitioners' availability. We aimed to explore general practitioners' (GPs') experiences when encountering a patient with pressured speech without pathological syndrome.
METHODS: Using a thematic analysis method, 19 semi-structured interviews were conducted with GPs purposively sampled in Ile-de-France region.
RESULTS: Three themes emerged. First, misgivings were aroused when meeting a patient with pressured speech, including frustration, displeasu

OBJECTIVES: Impaired speech-in-noise perception affects individuals' daily lives and is a frequent symptom of age-related hearing loss, which is a common disabling condition and a health concern in aging populations. The relative impact of hearing sensitivity loss and different cognitive functions on speech-in-noise perception is not well understood. We aimed to assess to what extent hearing sensitivity and different cognitive functions were associated with sentence-in-noise performance across the adult lifespan.
DESIGN: This study is based on data of 2585 participants of the Rhineland Study,

INTRODUCTION: The ability of people with Parkinson's Disease (PWPD) to perceive and identify impairments related to communication and swallowing is often impaired. This impairment prolongs the time to diagnosis of dysphonia and dysphagia, and can delay implementation of speech or swallowing therapy. We have limited knowledge of how different motor phenotypes of PD impact speech, voice and swallowing, nor how PWPD perceive these impacts. The purpose of this study was to identify how perceptions of speech and voice impairments predict dysphagia in PD, and how those perceptions differ between mot

Noise typically induces both peripheral and central masking of an auditory target. Whereas the idea that a deficit of speech in noise perception is inherent to dyslexia is still debated, most studies have actually focused on the peripheral contribution to the dyslexics' difficulties of perceiving speech in noise. Here, we investigated the respective contribution of both peripheral and central noise in three groups of children: dyslexic, chronological age matched controls (CA), and reading-level matched controls (RL). In all noise conditions, dyslexics displayed significantly lower performance

BACKGROUND: Speech perception ability depends on auditory and extra-auditory elements. The signal- to-noise ratio (SNR) is an extra-auditory element that has an effect on the ability to normally follow speech and maintain a conversation. Speech in noise perception difficulty is a common complaint of the elderly. In this study, the importance of SNR magnitude as an extra-auditory effect on speech perception in noise was examined in the elderly.
METHODS: The speech perception in noise test (SPIN) was conducted on 25 elderly participants who had bilateral low-mid frequency normal hearing thresho

Dyslexia is a language-based neurodevelopmental disorder. It is characterized as a persistent deficit in reading and spelling. These difficulties have been shown to result from an underlying impairment of the phonological component of language, possibly also affecting speech perception. Although there is little evidence for such a deficit under optimal, quiet listening conditions, speech perception difficulties in adults with dyslexia are often reported under more challenging conditions, such as when speech is masked by noise. Previous studies have shown that these difficulties are more pronou

PURPOSE: The claim that speech perception abilities are impaired in dyslexia was investigated in a group of 62 children with dyslexia and 51 average readers matched in age.
METHOD: To test whether there was robust evidence of speech perception deficits in children with dyslexia, speech perception in noise and quiet was measured using 8 different tasks involving the identification and discrimination of a complex and highly natural synthetic "bee"-"pea" contrast (copy synthesized from natural models) and the perception of naturally produced words.
RESULTS: Children with dyslexia, on average, p

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect of background noise on perception of unprocessed and envelope-enhanced speech in individuals with auditory neuropathy (AN).
DESIGN: Open-set speech identification abilities were assessed for unprocessed and envelope-enhanced speech in quiet and at three signal to noise ratios (10, 5, and 0 dB signal to noise ratio) in 15 individuals with AN.
RESULTS: Results revealed that speech identification ability was affected more in the presence of noise than in quiet. The participants were classified into two groups, Good Performers and Poor Performers, based on th

Recent research and clinical experience with cochlear implants suggest that subjects' speech recognition with monopolar or broad bipolar stimulation might be equal to or better than that obtained with narrow bipolar stimulation or other spatially restricted electrode configurations. Furthermore, subjects often prefer the monopolar configurations. The mechanisms underlying these effects are not clear. Two hypotheses are (a) that broader configurations excite more neurons resulting in a more detailed and robust neural representation of the signal and (b) that broader configurations achieve a bet

The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships between several temporal measures of speech movements and perceived nasalization in speakers with cleft palate. Four adult subjects with repaired cleft palate were filmed using high-speed (100 frames/s) cinefluorography as they produced target syllables embedded in a carrier phrase. Perceived nasalization of each extracted acoustic target syllable was rated by 18 trained judges. Movements of the tongue tip, tongue dorsum, jaw, velar knee, velar tip, and posterior pharyngeal wall were plotted over time. Time of movement onsets and movem

PURPOSE: Tinnitus is a condition that causes people to hear sounds without an external source. One significant issue arising from this condition is the difficulty in communicating, especially in the presence of noisy backgrounds. The process of understanding speech in challenging situations requires both cognitive and auditory abilities. Since tinnitus presents unique challenges, it is important to investigate how it affects speech perception in noise.
METHOD: In this review, 32 articles were investigated to determine the effect of tinnitus on the effect of speech in noise perception performa

Although several previous studies have confirmed that listeners find it difficult to perceive the speech of face-mask-wearing speakers, there has been little research into how masks affect hearing-impaired individuals using hearing aids. Therefore, the aim of this study was to compare the effects of masks on the speech perception in noise of hearing-impaired individuals and normal-hearing individuals. We also investigated the effect of masks on the gain conferred by hearing aids. The hearing-impaired group included 24 listeners (age: M = 69.5, SD = 8.6; M:F = 13:11) who had used hearing aids i

PURPOSE: Children with dyslexia have been suggested to experience deficits in both categorical perception (CP) and speech identification in noise (SIN) perception. However, results regarding both abilities are inconsistent, and the relationship between them is still unclear. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the relationship between CP and the psychometric function of SIN perception.
METHOD: Sixteen children with dyslexia, 16 chronological-age controls, and 16 reading-level controls were evaluated in CP of a voicing continuum and in consonant identification in both stationary and flu

PURPOSE: In this study, the authors aimed to determine whether children with dyslexia (hereafter referred to as "DYS children") are more affected than children with average reading ability (hereafter referred to as "AR children") by talker and intonation variability when perceiving speech in noise.
METHOD: Thirty-four DYS and 25 AR children were tested on their perception of consonants in naturally produced CV tokens in multitalker babble. Twelve CVs were presented for identification in four conditions varying in the degree of talker and intonation variability. Consonant place (/bi/-/di/) and

What is the nature of the interface between speech perception and production, where auditory and motor representations converge? One set of explanations suggests that during perception, the motor circuits involved in producing a perceived action are in some way enacting the action without actually causing movement (covert simulation) or sending along the motor information to be used to predict its sensory consequences (i.e., efference copy). Other accounts either reject entirely the involvement of motor representations in perception, or explain their role as being more supportive than integral

PURPOSE: This study investigated whether adults with dyslexia show evidence of a consistent speech perception deficit by testing phoneme categorization and word perception in noise.
METHOD: Seventeen adults with dyslexia and 20 average readers underwent a test battery including standardized reading, language and phonological awareness tests, and tests of speech perception. Categorization of a pea/bee voicing contrast was evaluated using adaptive identification and discrimination tasks, presented in quiet and in noise, and a fixed-step discrimination task. Two further tests of word perception
