Seasonality of brown recluse populations is reflected by numbers of brown recluse envenomations.

A significant seasonal correlation was recently shown for brown recluse spider activity. Vetter (2011) observed brown recluse spiders were submitted by the general public predominantly during April-October. For patients with suspected brown recluse spider bites (BRSB), we have observed the same seasonality. Among 45 cases with features consistent of a BRSB, 43 (95.6%) occurred during April-October. Both the Vetter study and our study serve to demonstrate seasonal activity for brown recluse spiders.

A loxoscelism case received therapeutic apheresis and hyperbaric oxygen therapy.

Loxosceles reclusa (L.reclusa) is known to bite humans, and its venom includes several enzymes that cause clinical symptoms. Loxoscelism, a condition due to being bitten by Loxosceles spiders, commonly known as recluses, can involve a range of clinical conditions, from local cutaneous lesions to severe systemic involvement. The diagnosis of loxoscelism is usually made by anamnesis and clinical findings. Magnetic resonance imaging is recommended for patients at high risk of necrotizing fasciitis. Treatment modalities are still controversial and there is no standardized treatment approach. Repor

Surgical Management of Acute Forearm Compartment Syndrome Due to Suspected Edematous Cutaneous Loxoscelism.

BACKGROUND Compartment syndrome of the forearm has been associated with a variety of etiologies, including fractures, snake bites, complications of certain infections, and, very rarely, spider bites. Loxoscelism is the venom-related clinical manifestation of the bite of spiders of the genus Loxosceles, also called brown or fiddler (violinist) spiders. It manifests locally/regionally with pain, erythema, and edema, with subsequent necrotic plaque formation at the site of the bite. This condition can threaten the function and integrity of the limbs and, in severe cases, can be life-threatening.

Wessel's tiger ornamental tarantula bite envenomation: A case report and venom analysis.

Tarantulas are commonly kept as pets and bites from some species can cause severe symptoms. Here we describe a case of a patient with transient atrial fibrillation (afib) and painful muscle cramps requiring hospitalization for pain management after being bitten by a Poecilotheria tigrinawesseli (Wessel's Tiger Ornamental) spider. He was discharged with a cardiac event monitor and outpatient cardiology follow-up. The event monitor documented transient afib which decreased in frequency then resolved halfway through the three-week monitoring period. In conclusion, tarantula envenomation is usuall

[Envenomation and poisoning by venomous or poisonous animals. VII: arachnidism in the New World].

The incidence of scorpion stings and spider bites is high in Latin America. This is particularly true for Mexico, part of Amazonia, and southern and eastern Brazil. Centruroides and Tityus scorpion stings present a real danger for humans, especially children. Envenomation results in intense pain, neurological signs, and cardiorespiratory manifestations that can lead to death by acute pulmonary edema or heart failure. In the event of confirmed envenomation, antivenin must be administered as soon as possible in association with symptomatic treatment and, if necessary, cardiorespiratory resuscita

Clinical consequences of toxic envenomation by spiders.

Spider venom is being researched for its potential use in applications such as insecticides, to better understand the dynamics of neuronal ion channel physiology and as potential remedies to counter antibiotic resistant bacteria. However, spider venom is more widely known for its ability to cause deleterious reactions after toxic envenomations in humans. In this short review, the "dark" side of spider venoms is presented to provide a counterbalance to the investigations of the positive potential that venoms can or might improve our world or its understanding. The goal was to present a short pr

Pairing patient photographs of arthropods with expert identification to uncover causes of bites and stings.

BugGuide.net is a website where arthropod photographs submitted by the public are identified by professional and amateur entomologists. In April 2023 posts containing "bitten" or "stung" were reviewed. Of 39 verified bites, 10 were blood-feeding insects. Others included 9 Heteroptera, 6 spiders, 6 lacewings. 110 posts of stings included 44 social Hymenoptera, 33 solitary Hymenoptera, 5 Heteroptera, 20 caterpillars and 4 scorpions. Injury from lacewing larvae, true bugs, solitary Hymenoptera and caterpillars was unexpectedly common.

[Snakes, scorpions and other poisonous creatures: prophylaxis and emergency medicine].

Most cases of poisoning by animals are caused by snakes, spiders or scorpions. In addition to"first aid" such as calming the victim and immobilization of the bitten limb, other measures include monitoring vital functions and rapid transportation to hospital as dictated by the symptoms presenting, and, where indicated, injection of an antiserum (identification of the animal concerned). On no account should the bite wound be cut or attempts made to suck out the venom. While the sting of a scorpion or a spider bite often do not lead to severe complications in adults, a brush with a poisonous snak

Use of stun guns for venomous bites and stings: a review.

During the past 2 decades, articles suggesting that stun guns be utilized to treat venomous bites and stings have appeared in both the lay and medical press. Although never widely considered to be standard therapy for venomous bites and stings, stun guns are still considered to be a treatment option by some medical practitioners and outdoor enthusiasts. A Medline search was performed using these terms: venomous bites, venomous stings, snake bites, spider bites, electrical, stun gun, high voltage electricity, low amperage electricity, direct current, and shock therapy. Articles selected include

Towards rationalisation of antivenom use in funnel-web spider envenoming: enzyme immunoassays for venom concentrations.

CONTEXT: Funnel-web spider (Atrax and Hadronyche spp.) envenoming is rare but causes severe neuromuscular, autonomic, and cardiac effects. A rabbit-derived IgG antivenom is available, but venom detection in patients has not been reported. OBJECTIVE: To use serial venom and antivenom concentrations to better define envenoming and antivenom effectiveness. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Serum was collected from nine patients with suspected funnel-web spider bites and clinical effects were recorded. Venom-specific enzyme immunoassays were developed to measure funnel-web spider venom and antivenom concen

The efficacy of antivenom in loxoscelism treatment.

Loxoscelism or brown spider envenomation is the most important form of araneism in some countries and constitutes the third cause of accidents by venomous animals in Brazil. The treatment of Loxosceles bites is still controversial, with a variety of interventions proposed and tried, such as antivenom. The majority of clinical studies demonstrate a significant delay between a spider's bite and presentation for treatment, and this delay is thought to lead to an ineffective administration of a specific antivenom. Even in Brazil, where the antivenom therapy has been indicated more frequently than

Quantifying the venom dose of the spider Cupiennius salei using monoclonal antibodies.

The variation in venom dose with prey size of the neotropical wandering spider Cupieinnius salei was examined experimentally. Monoclonal antibodies were raised against the venom toxins of C. salei. Mab 9H3, recognizing the main toxin CSTX-1, was used to quantify the venom by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Crickets (Achta domesticus) in four size classes were randomly offered to sixteen mature female spiders at 14d intervals. The prey items were removed from spiders five minutes after the initial bite and subsequently homogenized for ELISA measurements. The quantity of venom expende

Wound care of spider and snake envenomations.

Venomous bites and stings are numerous but severe local tissue damage is uncommon. Venoms may be simple substances or complex mixtures of many poorly characterized components whose interactions are still not fully understood. The best studied example of a dermonecrotic venom is that produced by the brown recluse spider (Loxosceles reclusa). Rattlesnake envenomation also causes significant wound injuries. Many spider and snake envenomation management modalities are controversial and the evidence is mounting against the use of a number of these treatments.

Venomous Bites, Stings, and Poisoning: An Update.

This article discusses the epidemiology, prevention, clinical features, and treatment of venomous bites by snakes, lizards, and spiders; stings by fish, jellyfish, echinoderms, insects, and scorpions; and poisoning by ingestion of fish, turtles, and shellfish. Invertebrate stings cause fatalities by anaphylaxis, secondary to acquired hypersensitivity (Hymenoptera, such as bees, wasps, and ants; and jellyfish), and by direct envenoming (scorpions, spiders, jellyfish, and echinoderms). Simple preventive techniques, such as wearing protective clothing, using a flashlight at night, and excluding v

[The "hornet spider" of Plinius].

Pliny the Elder describes in his 'Natural History' XXIX 86 a species of spider dangerous for human beings and looking like a hornet without wings. This description corresponds to Solipugae of the genus Karschia, living in arid areas of Central Asia. These animals are not venomous but can cause harm by their powerful bite and in some cases by a following inflammation of the wound. On the contrary, an animal called "wasp-like", mentioned by Nikander of Kolophon ('Theriaca', v. 738-746) and often regarded to be the same creature, seems to be a typical venomous spider which causes an acute intoxic

Arthropod poisons and the cardiovascular system.

Animal poisons induce myocardial damage after envenomation. The cardiac manifestations after black widow spider bite are rarely observed and their prognostic significance are not known. Hymenoptera induce anaphylactic manifestations commonly observed in adults with previous coronary artery disease although myocardial involvement is observed in a few without previous heart disease. The mechanism of cardiac involvement after scorpion envenomation has been elucidated, however after widow spider bite or hymenoptera stings the mechanism of myocardial damage of those without previous heart disease i
