Association of lower cranial nerve schwannoma with spinal ependymoma in ? NF2.

A 15 year old male, who had earlier been operated for intraspinal intramedullary ependymoma, subsequently developed a right cerebello pontine (CP) angle mass. A diagnosis of right CP angle ependymoma was considered, in view of established histology of previously operated spinal lesion. Histopathological examination of the well defined extra-axial mass, which was attached with ninth cranial nerve, however revealed a schwannoma. A diagnosis of Neurofibromatosis-2 (NF2) is strongly suspected, because of well established fact, that the spinal ependymomas may have association with lower cranial ner

Motor nerve conduction studies on children with spinal muscular atrophy.

Median and posterior tibial motor nerve conduction studies were performed on 10 children with spinal muscular atrophy (SMA). Three patients with SMA type I, in whom rapid deterioration occurred, showed reduced motor nerve conduction velocity and a remarkably low M-wave amplitude in both nerves. In type II and III patients, the motor nerve conduction velocity was normal in the median nerve, although the M-wave amplitude was small in the tibial nerve. In four patients, a reduction of the M-wave amplitude was observed as clinical symptoms advanced. These findings may suggest that motor conduction

[Peripheral nerve and spinal cord complication in intravenous heroin addiction].

The neurological complications observed in 6 HIV negative intravenous drug users are reported. Four developed acute neuromuscular involvement in a lumbosacral or brachial distribution with rhabdomyolysis, myoglobinuria, hypovolemia, renal and hepatic failure in the 3 most severely affected patients. Despite evidence of immunologic abnormalities and especially presence of anti-heroin antibodies, we feel that causative mechanisms include mixed compression and ischemia with an underlying toxic myopathy, resulting in segmental myopathy with secondary compression of peripheral nerves. Two patients

Gangliosides and allied glycosphingolipids in human peripheral nerve and spinal cord.

Glycosphingolipids were determined in human spinal cord, cauda equina and femoral nerve of 10 subjects aged 20-70 years and in dorsal and ventral roots of four subjects aged 17-60 years. Myelin was isolated from corresponding tissue. Axons were isolated from the four specimens of dorsal and ventral roots. The concentration (mean and standard error of mean) of gangliosides in spinal cord was 0.80 +/- 0.03 mumol sialic acid/g fresh tissue, in cauda equina 0.40 +/- 0.02 mumol/g and in femoral nerve 0.23 +/- 0.01 mumol/g. In spinal cord only trace amounts of glycosphingolipids of the lacto series

Comparison of direct bladder and sacral nerve stimulation in spinal cats.

Neuroprosthetic techniques have been used to facilitate voiding via electrical stimulation for bladder management following spinal cord injury (SCI), but high urethral resistance has been a problem. This problem was investigated here in the chronic, spinal, male cat (C6-T1) using direct bladder and sacral nerve stimulation. Direct bladder stimulation was only conducted during terminal procedures with an open abdomen and with four hook electrodes inserted into the bladder wall. Sacral stimulation was conducted daily during the 10 weeks post-SCI and during terminal procedures. Stimulation was co

Compressive neuropathy of spinal nerve roots. A mechanical or biological problem?

Pathophysiologically, nerve root pain production is a complex issue. For many years, mechanical compression has been regarded as the sole cause for such pain. There are indications, however, that other factors, such as intraneural inflammation, may be of importance in this context. In this article, four cases are presented in which nerve root related pain gradually resolved without any proven change in the mechanical deformation of the involved nerve root. The data presented here suggest that mechanical compression, per se, may not always be the sole cause of radicular pain and dysfunction. Th

Reinnervation of avulsed brachial plexus using the spinal accessory nerve.

The use of the accessory nerve as a donor is one of the possibilities for the reinnervation of the brachial plexus in cases of paralysis due to root avulsion. In this paper, an analysis of the reinnervation of the musculocutaneous or axillary nerve using the spinal accessory nerve is made on 13 cases, 8 of total and 5 of upper partial avulsion. In all cases, Allieu's technique was used, but in seven cases reinnervation was supplemented by upper intercostal nerves when there was total avulsion and/or by the medial pectoral nerve when there was partial avulsion. The methods are discussed and com

[Postoperative iatrogenic lesions of the external branch of the accessory spinal nerve].

Iatrogenic lesions of the spinal nerve are rare and generally occur during cervicotomy for aetiological assessment of adenopathy. The spinal nerve is essentially damaged at two sites: the supraclavicular fossa (where the nerve is very superficial) and in the antero-lateral triangle of the neck (where the nerve approaches the sterno-cleido-mastoid muscle). The lesion of the spinal nerve essentially presents in the form of paralysis of the trapezius; which should be examined systematically postoperatively and at subsequent consultations, as the clinical signs may only develop after a certain lat

Progressive myoclonic epilepsy, nerve deafness and spinal muscular atrophy.

A boy of Finnish descent developed nerve deafness at six years of age, action myoclonus two years later, generalized myoclonic seizures when 16 years old and muscular atrophy at the age of 17 years. Bulbar palsy caused his death from inhalational pneumonia when he was 19 years old. Autopsy disclosed no significant changes in the cerebral cortex, thalamus, striatum, Purkinje cells or dentate nucleus. The most striking histological finding was degeneration of motor neurones in cranial nerves and anterior horns of the spinal cord, with neuroaxonal dystrophy of nucleus gracilis and cuneatus. While

Functional evaluation of the spinal accessory nerve after neck dissection.

The pain and dysfunction associated with a loss of innervation by the spinal accessory nerve has motivated surgeons to modify the classic radical neck dissection. A prospective study of 109 patients who underwent either a radical neck dissection or a modification of it with preservation of the spinal accessory nerve revealed that those patients in whom the nerve, muscle, and vein were preserved had less dysfunction (30 percent) than those with nerve preservation only (50 percent) or classic radical neck dissection (60 percent). In addition, even when the functional disability was the same, the

Nerve conduction studies in patients with cervical spinal cord injuries.

Twenty-nine patients with cervical spinal cord lesions were tested extensively by upper extremity nerve conduction between 7 days and 15 years postinjury. Certain patients were retested serially to determine if slow progressive lesions occur in this population. Statistically significant abnormalities were found in the periphery, with a time-scale tentatively established as to when these lesions become detectable. Possible late anterior horn cell or motor root lesions were found in 17% of extremities tested.

Diuresis during fluid infusion : buffer nerve and spinal influences on it.

The rate and cumulative volume of diuresis were measured sequentially for each incremental infusion dose of 5 ml/kg body weight till a 100 ml/kg or more dose was reached. Normal saline (NS), Ringer-Locke (RL) and tender coconut water (TCW) were infused in three groups each of paraldehyde (PLD), and chloralose and urethane (C & U) anaesthetised dogs. The slow infusion rate of about 0.5 ml/kg/min was used. The RL infusion was repeated in vagotomised and/or carotid sinus (CS) denervated dogs and spinal dogs with or without intact vagi. During the NS and RL infusion schedules in PLD anaesthetised

Peripheral nerve involvement in spinal cord injury: an electromyographic study.

This electromyographic study was undertaken to assess the peripheral nervous system in patients with various types of paraplegia. Twelve patients were studied. In 8 patients the paraplegia was of the spastic type while 4 had flaccid paraplegia. Electromyographic abnormalities consisting of denervation potentials, slowed conduction and inexcitability of nerve were demonstrated in the lower limbs of all patients. These findings suggest a diffuse neuropathy of unknown cause, although local pressure palsies may have occurred in some patients. Because this involvement was more apparent in the flacc

[State of the nerve cells of the cat spinal ganglia transplanted into the mesentery].

The survival of the mature differentiated neurons from the spinal ganglia under the conditions of autotransplantation into the colon mesentery of the cat was studied in chronic experiments. For two months, one-third of the neurons from the peripheral parts of the grafts survived and, as the normal ones, had a pseudounipolar form. However, their initial glomeruli had excessive overgrowth in the form of perivascular plexus, in its formation both the main axonal segment with its fine lateral branches and the finest offshoots from the neuronal bodies take part. These regenerating nerve fibres toge
