Prostate cancer with incidental thoracic splenosis: a diagnostic challenge unveiled by 18 F-PSMA PET/CT imaging.

BACKGROUND: Thoracic splenosis is a rare condition caused by autotransplantation of splenic tissue into the thoracic cavity following thoracoabdominal trauma or surgery. Due to its radiological presentation, this condition often mimics malignancies, leading to potential misdiagnosis and unnecessary invasive procedures. A thorough clinical history, including prior splenic trauma or splenectomy, is therefore critical to raise suspicion. When imaging is inconclusive, non-invasive nuclear medicine techniques such as Tc-99 m heat-damaged erythrocyte scintigraphy represent the diagnostic gold standa

Detection of splenosis and ectopic spleens with 99mTc-labelled heat damaged autologous erythrocytes in 90 splenectomized patients.

Splenosis or ectopic spleens were detected in 22 of 45 patients splenectomized after either abdominal trauma or accidental lesions of the spleen during operation. The incidence of ectopic spleen tissue in various groups of splenectomized patients has been investigated by a sensitive scanning method employing reinjection of 99mTc-labelled heat damaged autologous erythrocytes. In comparison 7 cases were found among 45 patients who underwent splenectomy for haematological reasons. The time span between the operation and a positive scan varied between 3 months and 11 years. None of the patients in

Intrahepatic splenosis mimics hepatocellular carcinoma in a patient with chronic hepatitis B: A case report and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Splenosis is a benign and relatively uncommon condition caused by trauma or splenectomy or other procedures involving splenic tissue. It is usually asymptomatic, and often diagnosed accidentally, especially misdiagnosed as malignant tumor. METHODS: A 54-year-old man with prior history of chronic hepatitis B virus infection and underwent splenectomy for traumatic splenic rupture following a traffic accident 23 years previously was admitted to our hospital and found a hepatic mass in the right upper quadrant during an imaging examination. The diagnosis of his was not clear and final

Abdominal Splenosis Mimicking Peritoneal Metastasis in Prostate-Specific Membrane Antigen PET/CT, Confirmed With Selective Spleen SPECT/CT.

Ga-prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA) PET/CT is a rapidly evolving diagnostic technique to image prostate cancer. In contrast to the name PSMA, various tissues show Ga-PSMA uptake in PET/CT imaging. We present a case of a 68-year-old man with prostate cancer who underwent Ga-PSMA PET/CT. Along with metastatic lymph nodes, multiple nodular lesions within the peritoneal spaces of all 4 quadrants of the abdomen showed high PSMA expression. Because of a history of splenic rupture, a Tc-labeled heat-denatured erythrocyte scintigraphy and SPECT were performed. Peritoneal lesions showed high u

Portal vein entrance of splenic erythrocytic progenitor cells and local hypoxia of liver, two events cause intrahepatic splenosis.

Intrahepatic splenosis is a rare disorder of ectopic erythropoiesis in the liver. Although traumatic splenic rupture is the common factor in public cases, the mechanism of long latency is still unknown. The correlation between aging and hepatitis virus infection with the diagnosed occurrence was reported in a limited number of cases; nevertheless, it suggested that ectopic erythropoiesis in the liver could be induced by the hepatic disorder. Based on the susceptibility of the splenic erythropoiesis response to hypoxia and the inevitability of hypoxia caused by aging or pathological changes, we

Case Report: Adrenal gland splenosis mimicking a neuroendocrine tumor on 68Ga-DOTATATE and 18F-FDG PET/CT imaging.

Splenosis occurring in adrenal glands is relatively rare and is easily misdiagnosed as neoplastic lesions. Herein, we present a case of a 39-year-old woman who underwent a pancreatic tail resection and splenectomy 8 years ago due to caudal pancreatic neuroendocrine tumor and splenic invasion. She underwent abdominal ultrasound examination in an external hospital a month ago due to abdominal discomfort and found a lump in the left adrenal gland. She was admitted to our hospital for further diagnosis and treatment. Abdominal computed tomography (CT) examination revealed a nodule of equal soft ti

The Role of Fine-Needle Aspiration in Conjunction With Ancillary Immunophenotyping for Accurate Recognition of a Case of Splenosis in Perirectal Soft Tissue.

Splenosis is the implantation of splenic tissue into other organs following splenectomy or traumatic spleen injury. It typically manifests in the peritoneal cavity but can appear in other locations. Splenic nodules are often incidentally discovered during imaging, with nuclear scintigraphy being the gold standard for recognition. We report a case of splenosis found incidentally upon computed tomography for evaluation of chronic anemia in the anterior perirectal space of a 74-year-old man who had previously undergone splenectomy. Despite advances in imaging techniques, tissue examination is nec

Idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura occurring in a subject previously splenectomized for traumatic splenic rupture. Role of splenosis in the pathogenesis of thrombocytopenia.

A 25 year old woman presented with idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura. She had undergon splenectomy 12 years previously for traumatic splenic rupture. Thrombocytopenia was ultimately resistant to steroid therapy. Howell-Jolly bodies were absent from the peripheral smear and 99mTC-spleen scan demonstrated foci of increased uptake thought consistent with accessory spleens. However, splenosis alone was demonstrated at laparotomy, and all visible splenotic tissue was surgically removed. The patient responded and adequate platelet counts were maintained after discontinuation of steroid therapy. Th

A Lower Gastrointestinal Bleeding Due to a Post-Traumatic Splenosis: "Wait and See" Represents a Feasible Attitude: A Case Report.

Splenosis represents a benign condition due to an ectopic localization of splenic tissue caused by pathologic or traumatic spleen rupture. Generally, it is asymptomatic and incidentally diagnosed during imaging performed for other reasons. Occult gastrointestinal bleeding due to an extraperitoneal localization is a rare occurrence. Differential diagnosis may be very hard and includes benign and malignant neoplasms. We describe the case of a 68-year-old Caucasian man that was admitted for an increasing lower gastrointestinal bleeding associated to a vague abdominal pain.He was assessed by means

Diffuse abdominal splenosis mimicking peritoneal metastases in a 35-year-old man with a resectable carcinoma of the ampulla of vater.

A 35-year-old man with a history of blunt abdominal trauma and splenic rupture was diagnosed with an ampullary adenocarcinoma. At workup, a CT scan showed multiple intra-abdominal lesions similar to peritoneal carcinosis, and the patient was referred for palliative chemotherapy. On clinical suspicion, however, a biopsy was performed on an intra-abdominal lesion, establishing the diagnosis of abdominal splenosis. A radical pancreaticoduodenectomy ad modum Whipple was performed, followed by adjuvant chemotherapy with gemcitabine. At the 18-month follow-up, the patient was free from recurrent dis

Splenosis Mimicking Peritoneal Seeding of Advanced Colon Cancer Can Be Identified by Spleen SPECT/CT and FDG PET/CT.

This case report demonstrates that Tc-99m labeled heat-damaged red blood cell single-photon emission computed tomography/computed tomography (spleen SPECT/CT) and F-18 fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/CT (FDG PET/CT) could noninvasively confirm splenosis mimicking peritoneal seeding of advanced sigmoid colon cancer with hepatic metastases, and played a crucial role in determining the treatment plan.

High-Resolution Splenic Imaging: [68Ga]Ga-Oxine Red Blood Cell PET/CT for Differentiation of Splenosis Mimicking Malignant Lymphoma.

The differentiation of splenic tissue from malignant lesions via imaging may be challenging, particularly considering aberrant or accessory lesions and diseases that are rarely encountered. Functioning splenic tissue can be identified using technetium-99m red blood cell (99mTc-RBC) scintigraphy, but its sensitivity is limited and may not be available. We present the case of a patient in whom disseminated abdomino-pelvic splenosis was diagnosed using PET/CT with gallium-68-oxine-labeled RBCs. The method represents a feasible and probably superior alternative to splenic scintigraphy.

Contained morcellation of the spleen using a completely enclosed laparoscopic isolation system: a 5-year follow-up study on the evaluation of splenosis.

BACKGROUND: Specimen extraction in massive splenomegaly remains a major challenge in laparoscopic splenectomy. To address this, the Completely Enclosed Laparoscopic Isolation System (CELIS) was utilized to enable contained morcellation without incision enlargement. METHODS: This single-arm retrospective study included 14 patients undergoing CELIS-assisted laparoscopic splenectomy with fully enclosed morcellation under intrabag pneumoperitoneum. RESULTS: All procedures were completed without conversion or incision enlargement. Mean operative time was 182.86 ± 52.84 min, with efficient CELIS d

[Peritoneal splenosis 26 years after traumatic splenic rupture--rare differential diagnosis of a subepithelial gastric mass--case report and review of the literature].

Differential diagnoses of subepithelial gastric masses include benign (leiomyoma, lipoma, haemangioma, lymphangioma, neurogenic tumours, glomus tumour) and malignant (leiomyosarcoma, gastric Kaposi's sarcoma, metastases) neoplastic lesions, gastrointestinal stromal tumours (GIST) and lesions of non-neoplastic origin (heterotopic pancreatic tissue, intramural pseudocysts, intramural haematoma). Occasionally, however, suspected gastric wall tumours are caused by extragastral lesions that are not always easily distinguished from genuine gastric wall lesions by endoscopy or radiological imaging. Gastric fundus splenosis with hemangioma masquerading as a gastrointestinal stromal tumor in a patient with schistosomiasis and cirrhosis who underwent splenectomy: A case report and literature review.

RATIONALE: Splenosis is the heterotopic auto-transplantation of the splenic tissues. Gastric splenosis in a rare location mimics a gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST). Gastric splenosis with hemangioma has not been reported throughout the literature. PATIENT CONCERNS: We report a case of a 74-year-old schistosomiasis cirrhosis splenectomy woman diagnosed with gastric fundus mass. Preoperative computed tomography and endoscopic ultrasonography revealed findings suggestive of a GIST. DIAGNOSES: The mass located in the gastric fundus muscularis propria, measuring 3.9 × 2.8 × 2.4 cm with a dar
