Flavor encapsulation capacities of amphiphilic polyvinylpyrrolidone as a carrier for amorphous solid dispersions.

This study investigates the characteristics of amorphous solid dispersions (ASDs) formed using an amphiphilic carrier polymer, focusing on the effects of source solution conditions on flavor retention. Cinnamaldehyde and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) were dissolved as flavor and carrier components in methanol or ethanol under different conditions and subsequently spray-dried into fine powders. The amount of cinnamaldehyde retained in the spray-dried ASDs was quantified to assess the impact of solution conditions. The results indicate that cinnamaldehyde molecules were physically entrapped within

Design of metastable peanut protein-polyphenol complex particles for tunable flow, interfacial, and gelation properties.

This study investigated the complexation process between peanut protein (PP) and three structurally distinct trace polyphenols-gallic acid (GA), quercetin (QR), and epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG)-followed by spray drying. Spectroscopic analysis indicated that the polyphenols, acting as liquid-phase conformational modulators, guided the peptide chains into compact, α-helix-rich structures through specific noncovalent interactions (hydrophobic embedding for quercetin, and hydrogen bonding for gallic acid and epigallocatechin gallate). Rapid dehydration during the spray-drying process dynamicall

Effect of storage on the dissolution rate of a fast-dissolving perphenazine/β-cyclodextrin complex.

OBJECTIVE: In general, the chemical and physical stability of amorphous cyclodextrin complexes and how storage affects their dissolution rate have not been widely reported. The aim of this study was to evaluate the solid-state stability of a fast-dissolving perphenazine/β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) complex, which has been found to be well absorbed after sublingual administration to rabbits. In addition, the dissolution rate of plain β-CD in crystalline and amorphous forms was determined. METHODS: The amorphous perphenazine/β-CD complex powders were prepared by spray-drying and freeze-drying, and the

Natural Macromolecules as Building Blocks for Microcapsule Formation in Drug Delivery.

Background/Objectives: Microcapsules are particles 1-1000 µm in size, with a core containing the active substance (in liquid, solid, or gaseous state) and a shell typically composed of natural, synthetic, or semi-synthetic polymers. Although natural polymer-based microcapsules have applications in food, cosmetics, and other industries, this review primarily focuses on their role in pharmaceutical drug delivery. In recent years, natural macromolecules have gained increasing attention as coating materials due to their biocompatibility, biodegradability, low toxicity, mucoadhesive properties, and

Butter flavour encapsulation in spray-dried powders: The role of combined carbohydrate matrices in volatile retention and stability.

This study examined how carbohydrate matrix composition, including maltodextrins (MDs), lactose and trehalose, affects butter flavour encapsulation. Octenyl succinic anhydride (OSA) starch combined with MD (DE 18) or lactose achieved the highest encapsulation efficiencies (83.5% and 79.3%), likely due to rapid shell formation. OSA starch alone or with lactose provided the greatest retention of volatile ketones (>90%), highlighting the influence of molecular weight (MW) and structural conformation. During six months of storage, OSA starch alone maintained flavour retention above 85%, outperform

Evolution of Interparticle Correlation and Size Stratification in an Evaporating Colloidal Droplet.

Evaporation-induced assembly of colloidal particles is a ubiquitous phenomenon that is widely utilized in pharmaceutical and chemical industries. Understanding the temporal evolution of structural correlation during such a nonequilibrium process of assembly is crucial, as it is governed by a combination of thermodynamic and kinetic parameters. Real-time monitoring of a single micrometric evaporating colloidal droplet to track structural evolution is a challenging task owing to several technical constraints. However, coarse-grained particle dynamics simulations can provide detailed insights int

Block the bitter: Microencapsulation of zidovudine as a taste masking technique for drug inclusion into an oral thin film.

HIV infections among children have been on the decline since the introduction of infant HIV prophylaxis regimens including the HIV reverse transcriptase inhibitor, zidovudine (ZDV). This makes adherence to ZDV and other HIV medications paramount for the survival of young infants and children across the globe. However, the large dose volume and extremely bitter taste of ZDV often results in infants spitting up the medication, resulting in inaccurate dosing. Inclusion of ZDV into an oral thin film (OTF) would reduce the dose volume required, thus improving adherence to the medication regimen. To

An approach to a cold chain free oral cholera vaccine: in vitro and in vivo characterization of Vibrio cholerae gastro-resistant microparticles.

The present work describes the formulation of Eudragit(®) L30 D-55 microparticles (MP) alone or with mucoadhesive agents, alginate or Carbopol(®), as an approach for the development of an oral cholera vaccine. In the first part, a spray drying technique was optimized for microparticle elaboration, obtaining a microparticle size ranging from 7 to 9 μm with high encapsulation efficiencies. Moreover, gastro resistant properties and Vibrio cholerae (VC) antigenicity were maintained, but for Eudragit(®)-Carbopol(®) microparticles which showed low antigenicity values, ≈25%. Next, a stability study w

Assessment of the Acidithiobacillus system upon microencapsulation with Arabic gum for its application in the mineral leaching.

Bio-metallurgical processes provide interesting alternatives to critical issues that affect the mining industry, namely, the recovery of metals of interest and bioremediation of contaminated soils and waters. There is a wide variety of microorganisms related to mining activities; however, bio-metallurgical processes impact on industrial processes is not high, mainly due to two reasons: the costs of monitoring metabolic activities and the genetic stability of bacteria during long process times. This research presents a novel strategy for the manipulation of microorganisms, with economical and s

Development of Prolonged-Release Orodispersible Minitablets Containing Bisoprolol Fumarate.

Background/Objectives: Bisoprolol fumarate (BF) is a cardioselective beta-blocker used to treat pediatric heart failure and certain tachyarrhythmias. Currently, it is administered mainly as extemporaneously prepared suspensions from crushed tablets, which may cause issues with dose accuracy, stability, and palatability. Orodispersible minitablets (MODTs) may facilitate administration and individualized dosing, while prolonged release could potentially reduce peak-to-trough fluctuations and, thus, minimize adverse effects such as hypotension or bradycardia. This proof-of-concept study aimed to
