Child abuse and neglect: oral and dental signs and the role of the dentist.

Historically, the law, dental and forensic literature has included numerous articles concerning abused children. The orofacial structures are injured frequently in the maltreated child. Injuries of the neck, head, face, and oral cavity represent the most affected areas of the victim's body that routinely sustain physical trauma in child maltreatment cases. This literature review aimed to report the state of art of child abuse from the point of view of the dentist with focus on studies in dental aspects of child abuse and neglect of the last ten years. Considering the time slot, 20 papers were

Meth Mouth-A Growing Epidemic in Dentistry?

In the past two decades, the synthetic style and fashion drug "crystal meth" ("crystal", "meth"), chemically representing the crystalline form of the methamphetamine hydrochloride, has become more and more popular in the United States, in Eastern Europe, and just recently in Central and Western Europe. "Meth" is cheap, easy to synthesize and to market, and has an extremely high potential for abuse and dependence. As a strong sympathomimetic, "meth" has the potency to switch off hunger, fatigue and, pain while simultaneously increasing physical and mental performance. The most relevant side eff

Stability of parenteral midazolam in an oral formulation.

Midazolam is increasingly being used for oral sedation in pediatric dentistry. Unfortunately, it is available only as a parenteral formulation in Canada and the United States. Preparation of the parenteral solution for oral use is not uniform and leads the clinician to question the stability of this drug when used in conjunction with these vehicles. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate the chemical stability of parenteral midazolam as an oral formulation to determine its expiry date. This was evaluated using a validated stability-indicating liquid chromatographic method. Mid

[Objective and subjective assessment of the quality and effectiveness of orthodontic treatment].

Dentofacial anomalies occupy one of the leading places among dental diseases in people of different age groups. Analysis of epidemiological data on the prevalence of dentoalveolar anomalies indicates that there is no tendency to decrease it in Russia and abroad countries. The demand for orthodontic treatment is increasing with the development of new technologies and materials, the development of modern methods of treatment in the field of dentistry. This trend is accompanied by increased requirements for the quality of orthodontic care. The patient's dissatisfaction with the result of treatmen

Antibiotic Prescribing in Dental Medicine-Best Practices for Successful Implementation.

With rising rates of antimicrobial resistance throughout the world, it is time to revisit antibiotic prescribing policies and practices, and dentistry is an important area for focused intervention, as it accounts for up to 15% of all antimicrobial prescriptions. In this narrative review, we have analyzed the current state of the knowledge, attitudes, and practice regarding antimicrobial use among dental professionals, and we have identified a set of seven recurring themes that drive inappropriate antibiotic prescribing in dental medicine. These include: 1. Prescribing antibiotics to delay or a

Oral hygiene and gingival health in Danish dental students and faculty.

This survey attempted to determine the status of oral cleanliness and gingival health in 150 dental students and 101 faculty members in a dental school. Without advance notice, plaque deposits were scored, using the Plaque Index System, and gingival health was determined using the criteria of the Gingival Index System. The 1st-year students had the poorest hygiene and gingival health. An improvement (P less than 0.01) was noted in the 2nd-year students who were still not in clinical training but had completed a course in preventive dentistry including oral hygiene techniques. Further improveme

Stem cell-derived exosomes in tissue regeneration of oral and maxillofacial region: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Oral and maxillofacial diseases are often accompanied by tissue defects and damages, which are difficult to repair and affect patients both physically and psychologically as well as daily life. Recent 5 years studies have proved that stem cell-derived exosomes possess a broad clinical application in regenerative dentistry by promoting hard and soft tissue regeneration, angiogenesis, nerve repair, and wound healing, inhibiting inflammation and apoptosis, and modulating immune responses. The purpose of this review is to sum up the current state of research on stem cell-derived exosom

Considerations in the treatment of individuals with obesity and periodontitis.

Two common non-communicable diseases, obesity and periodontitis, are responsible for and affected by systemic inflammation, sharing common risk factors and mechanistic pathways. Periodontitis is an irreversible immune-mediated inflammatory disease of hard and soft tissue supporting teeth. If left untreated, periodontitis can lead to tooth loss, affecting food choices and healthy eating, therefore affecting overall health. Obesity is an independent predictive factor for worsened periodontal inflammation, increased onset, progression, severity, and recurrence of infection, as well as delayed wou

Abductive multi-instance multi-label learning for periodontal disease classification with prior domain knowledge.

Machine learning is widely used in dentistry nowadays, offering efficient solutions for diagnosing dental diseases, such as periodontitis and gingivitis. Most existing methods for diagnosing periodontal diseases follow a two-stage process. Initially, they detect and classify potential Regions of Interest (ROIs) and subsequently determine the labels of the whole images. However, unlike the recognition of natural images, the diagnosis of periodontal diseases relies significantly on pinpointing specific affected regions, which requires professional expertise that is not fully captured by existing

This systematic review evaluates the current literature on state-of-the-art radiation-free MRI techniques for managing dental, oral, and maxillofacial trauma, comparing their diagnostic performance to conventional X-ray-based imaging. Two reviewers conducted an investigation using the PICOS search strategy across multiple databases, including MEDLINE, EMBASE, BIOSIS, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, LILACS, and BBO Dentistry. Twenty-nine studies were included: 12 on orbital trauma, 10 on condylar, subcondylar, or TMJ trauma, five on mandibular fractures, and one each on temporal bone and dent

Artificial Intelligence in Adult and Pediatric Dentistry: A Narrative Review.

Artificial intelligence (AI) has been recently introduced into clinical dentistry, and it has assisted professionals in analyzing medical data with unprecedented speed and an accuracy level comparable to humans. With the help of AI, meaningful information can be extracted from dental databases, especially dental radiographs, to devise machine learning (a subset of AI) models. This study focuses on models that can diagnose and assist with clinical conditions such as oral cancers, early childhood caries, deciduous teeth numbering, periodontal bone loss, cysts, peri-implantitis, osteoporosis, loc

UNLABELLED: Cardiogenic shock (CS) is one of the main causes of death in patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI). Mortality from CS remains high, despite the introduction of myocardial revascularization and the use of modern medication. The use of mechanical circulatory support (MCS) is promising, it could reduce mortality in patients with AMI and CS. AIM: To define effectiveness and safety of MCS in patients with AMI and CS. Comparison by means of bispectral index score, between anxiolysis induced by diazepam and sedation induced by midazolam.

AIM: Bispectral Index Score (BIS) is an objective tool to assess sedation depth. Benzodiazepines have different pharmacological profiles and diazepam may be safer than midazolam in this setting. The aim of this study was to compare BIS values observed during anxiolysis after diazepam versus sedation after midazolam. METHODS: Thirty-six patients were randomly assigned to 3 groups: group 1 was treated with i.v. diazepam, groups 2 and 3 with iv midazolam 1 and 3 mg, respectively. Sedation was monitored clinically and by means of BIS. BIS values were evaluated as area under the curve (AUC) and co
