Interval estimation for Poisson capture-recapture models in epidemiology.

Capture-recapture studies in epidemiology are frequently undertaken to adjust underlying rates for underreporting. This contrasts with applications in ecology, in which the aim is to estimate population size. In consequence, the Poisson model provides a more appropriate framework than the multinomial in some epidemiological applications. A method for constructing profile Poisson likelihood interval estimates using log-linear modelling, avoiding the need for constrained optimization, is described for several relevant parameters, including the unobserved disease rate, the total disease rate, and

Observer-Based Source Localization in Tree Infection Networks via Laplace Transforms.

We address the problem of localizing the source of infection in an undirected, tree-structured network under a susceptible-infected outbreak model. The infection propagates with independent random time increments (i.e., edge-delays) between neighboring nodes, while only the infection times of a subset of nodes can be observed. We show that a reduced set of observers may be sufficient, in the statistical sense, to localize the source and characterize its identifiability via the joint Laplace transform of the observers' infection times. Using the explicit form of these transforms in terms of the

Fault Detection and Monitoring in Induction Machines Using Data-Driven Model Drift Detection.

Stator short-circuit faults (SSCFs) account for a significant portion of induction motor failures, yet their early detection remains a challenge in industrial environments where labeled fault data is scarce and installing additional sensors is often impractical. This paper proposes a novel, data-driven fault detection and diagnosis framework grounded in the Residual Information Value (RIV) principle to overcome reliability limitations of traditional spectral and residual energy methods. By redefining fault detection as a statistical test of independence between control inputs (voltages) and cu

New approaches to measuring anthelminthic drug efficacy: parasitological responses of childhood schistosome infections to treatment with praziquantel.

BACKGROUND: By 2020, the global health community aims to control and eliminate human helminthiases, including schistosomiasis in selected African countries, principally by preventive chemotherapy (PCT) through mass drug administration (MDA) of anthelminthics. Quantitative monitoring of anthelminthic responses is crucial for promptly detecting changes in efficacy, potentially indicative of emerging drug resistance. Statistical models offer a powerful means to delineate and compare efficacy among individuals, among groups of individuals and among populations. METHODS: We illustrate a variety of

Autferroics-Based True Random Number Generators with Enhanced Performance.

Physical entropy-driven true random number generators are essential for emerging probabilistic computing paradigms, but conventional implementations based on magnetic tunneling junctions have reached their performance plateaus limited by inherent tradeoffs and weak tunability. Here, autferroics, a sister branch of multiferroics, is proposed to construct true random number generators. Benefiting from its unique energy landscape due to strong seesaw-type magnetoelectricity, the performance of true random number generation can be significantly enhanced in autferroic tunneling junctions, verified

Reducing the complexity of an agent-based local heroin market model.

This project explores techniques for reducing the complexity of an agent-based model (ABM). The analysis involved a model developed from the ethnographic research of Dr. Lee Hoffer in the Larimer area heroin market, which involved drug users, drug sellers, homeless individuals and police. The authors used statistical techniques to create a reduced version of the original model which maintained simulation fidelity while reducing computational complexity. This involved identifying key summary quantities of individual customer behavior as well as overall market activity and replacing some agents

American cutaneous leishmaniasis in Southeast Brazil: space-time clustering.

BACKGROUND: American cutaneous leishmaniasis (ACL) is endemic in many rural areas of Brazil where different transmission patterns of the disease have been described. This ecological study was carried out in a municipality located in Southeast Brazil and aimed to investigate the space-temporal patterns of the disease and environmental risk factors from 1966 to 1996. METHODS: Incident ACL cases were defined by clinical diagnosis, confirmed by a positive skin test and/or parasitological examination. Age-adjusted morbidity rate of ACL was calculated by year for this municipality and their differe

A GLM-based latent variable ordination method for microbiome samples.

Distance-based ordination methods, such as principal coordinates analysis (PCoA), are widely used in the analysis of microbiome data. However, these methods are prone to pose a potential risk of misinterpretation about the compositional difference in samples across different populations if there is a difference in dispersion effects. Accounting for high sparsity and overdispersion of microbiome data, we propose a GLM-based Ordination Method for Microbiome Samples (GOMMS) in this article. This method uses a zero-inflated quasi-Poisson (ZIQP) latent factor model. An EM algorithm based on the qua

Frequency distributions of Echinococcus granulosus and other helminths in stray dogs in Tunisia.

The intestinal helminths infecting stray dogs were investigated in the Testour and Bouzid regions of Tunisia. Overall, 21% of the dogs necropsied were found to be infected with Echinococcus granulosus. The prevalence among the animals from Testour (27.0%) was significantly higher than that in the dogs from Bouzid (6.9%). Although the prevalence of this species in the dog populations did give a significant fit to the age-prevalence models reported earlier, the best fit was not consistent with the known biological parameters of the parasite. The frequency distribution of E. granulosus was highly

Distinguishing cause from effect in psychological research: An independence-based approach under linear non-Gaussian models.

Distinguishing cause from effect - that is, determining whether x causes y (x → y) or, alternatively, whether y causes x (y → x) - is a primary research goal in many psychological research areas. Despite its importance, determining causal direction with observational data remains a difficult task. In this study, we introduce an independence-based approach for causal discovery between two variables of interest under a linear non-Gaussian model framework. We propose a two-step algorithm based on distance correlations that provides empirical conclusions on the causal directionality of effects und

Regularization for generalized additive mixed models by likelihood-based boosting.

OBJECTIVE: With the emergence of semi- and nonparametric regression the generalized linear mixed model has been extended to account for additive predictors. However, available fitting methods fail in high dimensional settings where many explanatory variables are present. We extend the concept of boosting to generalized additive mixed models and present an appropriate algorithm that uses two different approaches for the fitting procedure of the variance components of the random effects. METHODS: The main tool developed is likelihood-based componentwise boosting that enforces variable selection

Robust propagation velocity estimation of gastric electrical activity by least mean p-norm blind channel identification.

The propagation of the gastric slow wave is one of the most important spatial characteristics of gastric electrical activity (GEA). The time delay estimation (TDE) is an effective approach to quantitatively assessing the propagation velocity of GEA. Traditional TDE analyses are developed under the condition reported that the background noise in GEA analysis is Gaussian distributed. Due to the effects of spikes and/or motion artifacts, the GEA obtained from gastric serosal electrodes often contains sharp transitions. This paper proposes robust time delay estimation based on least mean p-norm bl

[The short-term effects of air pollution on mortality. The results of the EMECAM project in the city of Vigo, 1991-94. Estudio Multicéntrico Español sobre la Relación entre la Contaminación Atmosférica y la Mortalidad].

BACKGROUND: In the Autonomous Region of Galicia, no study has been made of the impacts of air pollution on human health, despite the fact that several of its major cities have moderate levels of pollution. Therefore, we have considered the need of making this study in the city of Vigo. The main objective of this analysis is that of analyzing the short-term impact of air pollution on the daily death rate for all reasons in the city of Vigo throughout the 1991-1994 period, by using the procedure for analysis set out as part of the EMECAM Project. METHOD: The daily fluctuations in the number of

Gaussian process based bayesian semiparametric quantitative trait Loci interval mapping.

In linkage analysis, it is often necessary to include covariates such as age or weight to increase power or avoid spurious false positive findings. However, if a covariate term in the model is specified incorrectly (e.g., a quadratic term misspecified as a linear term), then the inclusion of the covariate may adversely affect power and accuracy of the identification of quantitative trait loci (QTL). Furthermore, some covariates may interact with each other in a complicated fashion. We implement semiparametric models for single and multiple QTL mapping. Both mapping methods include an unspecifi

Conduction velocity distribution estimation using the collision technique for assessing carpal tunnel syndrome.

A technique for selectively activating nerve fibers based on their diameter using the collision technique and evaluating nerve integrity using a conduction velocity distribution (CVD) estimator is discussed in this paper. This study is aimed at improving current diagnostic techniques used for assessing carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). Current nerve conduction studies are influenced by the activity of the largest fibers active at the moment of recording and it is not possible to selectively analyze the functioning of smaller nerve fibers. According to the literature, the severity of CTS progresses

Technical and biological variance structure in mRNA-Seq data: life in the real world.

BACKGROUND: mRNA expression data from next generation sequencing platforms is obtained in the form of counts per gene or exon. Counts have classically been assumed to follow a Poisson distribution in which the variance is equal to the mean. The Negative Binomial distribution which allows for over-dispersion, i.e., for the variance to be greater than the mean, is commonly used to model count data as well. RESULTS: In mRNA-Seq data from 25 subjects, we found technical variation to generally follow a Poisson distribution as has been reported previously and biological variability was over-dispers

On the use of zero-inflated and hurdle models for modeling vaccine adverse event count data.

We compared several modeling strategies for vaccine adverse event count data in which the data are characterized by excess zeroes and heteroskedasticity. Count data are routinely modeled using Poisson and Negative Binomial (NB) regression but zero-inflated and hurdle models may be advantageous in this setting. Here we compared the fit of the Poisson, Negative Binomial (NB), zero-inflated Poisson (ZIP), zero-inflated Negative Binomial (ZINB), Poisson Hurdle (PH), and Negative Binomial Hurdle (NBH) models. In general, for public health studies, we may conceptualize zero-inflated models as allowi

Air pollution exposure monitoring and estimation VII. Estimation of population exposure in a central European airshed.

In order to clarify the local variation in exposure and source-receptor relationships, a dispersion model for estimating air pollution concentrations was developed for a polluted area in the Czech Republic. Three models characterized by different spatial resolution were integrated into one modelling tool. A regional-scale dispersion model accounted for pollution contribution from sources outside the modelling area. Local- and urban-scale dispersion models were used to calculate local concentration distributions. Calculated concentration distributions were evaluated. Deviations between observed
