The Behavior Problems Inventory (BPI-01) in community-based adults with intellectual disabilities: reliability and concurrent validity vis-à-vis the Inventory for Client and Agency Planning (ICAP).

Reliability and concurrent validity of the Behavior Problems Inventory (BPI-01; Rojahn et al., 2001) was examined in a sample of 130 community residing adults with mild to profound intellectual disabilities with high rates of behavior problems and concurrent mental health problems. The BPI-01 and the Inventory for Client and Agency Planning (ICAP; Bruininks et al., 1986) were administered twice within a mean time interval of 7.8 weeks by 20 trained and experienced staff members. All three BPI-01 subscales had high inter-rater agreement (Self-Injurious Behavior [SIB]: mean ICC=.84; Stereotyped

Pentadecapeptide BPC 157 attenuates chronic amphetamine-induced behavior disturbances.

AIM: To investigate the effect of pentadecapeptide BPC 157 on chronic exposure to amphetamine in rats, particularly the changes commonly referred in chronic amphetamine studies as tolerance (lesser grade of stereotyped behavior, without increased excitability) and reverse tolerance (ie, prominent stereotyped behavior and heightened startle response upon late amphetamine challenges). METHODS: After initial application (initial single dose-regimen), amphetamine (10 mg/kg,ip) was given once daily till d 5 (continuous administration-regimen), and thereafter on d 8, 16, and 46 (intermittent admini

Clomipramine treatment for stereotype and related repetitive movement disorders associated with mental retardation.

The efficacy of the serotonin uptake inhibitor clomipramine in the treatment of stereotyped and related repetitive behavior disorders was tested in individuals with severe and profound mental retardation. A double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover trial of clomipramine was associated with significant reductions in the frequency and intensity of stereotyped behavior and teacher ratings of stereotypy, hyperactivity, and irritability as well as increased adaptive engagement and decreased staff intervention for nontargeted behavior problems. Adverse effects occurred in 3 of the 10 subjects. Of t

Efficacy of fluvoxamine as a treatment for behavioral symptoms in frontotemporal lobar degeneration patients.

Patients with frontotemporal lobar degeneration (FTLD) present a profound personality change, social misconduct, overeating, and stereotyped behavior. We examined the hypothesis that many of the behavioral symptoms of FTLD will respond to selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). Sixteen FTLD patients were treated with an SSRI (fluvoxamine maleate) in an open 12-week trial. Treatment responses for stereotyped behavior and other neurobehavioral symptoms were evaluated by the Stereotypy Rating Inventory and the Neuropsychiatric Inventory. The behavioral symptoms, especially stereotyped be

[Factor structure of the Autism Diagnostic Interview-Revised (ADI-R): a study of dimensional versus categorical classification of autistic disorders].

OBJECTIVES: This study investigated whether empirically derived dimensions of autistic behavior are consistent with the content-valid construction of the autistic behavior domains according to ICD-10 and DSM-IV (social interaction, communication and repetitive, stereotyped behavior). METHODS: A principal component exploratory factor analysis routine with varimax-rotation and extraction of factors following the Scree criterion was run using data from the Autism Diagnostic Interview-Revised (ADI-R) of N = 262 individuals exhibiting autism or autistic features. RESULTS: A three-factor solution

The role of the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex in the inhibition of stereotyped responses.

Stereotyped behaviors should be inhibited under some circumstances in order to encourage appropriate behavior. Psychiatrists have used the modified rock-paper-scissors (RPS) task to examine the inhibition of stereotyped behavior. When subjects are required to lose in response to a gesture, it is difficult for them to lose, and they have a tendency to win involuntarily. It is thought that the win response is the stereotyped response in the RPS task, and the difficulty in making positive attempts to lose is due to the requirement for inhibition of the stereotyped response. In this study, we inve

Challenging behavior in adults with epilepsy and intellectual disability: An analysis of epilepsy characteristics.

PURPOSE: The study aimed to describe the frequency and severity of self-injurious, stereotyped, and aggressive/destructive behavior in adults with both epilepsy and intellectual disability (ID) who reside at a tertiary epilepsy center and to investigate the associations between challenging behavior and epilepsy and ID characteristics. METHOD: The frequency and severity of self-injurious, (motoric) stereotyped, and aggressive/destructive behavior among 189 patients was assessed using the Behavior Problem Inventory. Comparisons were made with an adult reference population with ID, based on gend

The bombesin/gastrin releasing peptide receptor antagonist RC-3095 blocks apomorphine but not MK-801-induced stereotypy in mice.

Bombesin (BN)-like peptides might be involved in the pathogenesis of neuropsychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia. Stereotyped behaviors induced by the dopamine receptor agonist apomorphine or the N-methyl-D-aspartate glutamate receptor antagonist dizocilpine (MK-801) in rodents have been proposed as animal models of schizophrenic psychosis. In the present study we evaluated the effects of the BN/gastrin-releasing peptide receptor (GRP) antagonist (D-Tpi6, Leu13 psi[CH2NH]-Leu14) bombesin (6-14) (RC-3095) on apomorphine and MK-801-induced stereotyped behavior in mice. Effects of an oral hygiene punishment procedure on chronic rumination and collateral behaviors in monozygous twins.

This study investigated the suppressive effects of an oral hygiene punishment procedure on the ruminative behavior of profoundly retarded monozygous twins. Rumination, fingers in mouth/tongue out, appropriate behavior, and stereotyped behavior were measured before and during treatment with oral hygiene. Treatment was introduced for each meal in succession across the twins in a multiple-baseline design. Results showed that the rate of rumination of both twins was dramatically reduced to very low levels and stereotyped behavior increased spontaneously with the introduction of oral hygiene. Maint

The Stereotypy Rating Inventory for frontotemporal lobar degeneration.

A many behavioral disturbances, Stereotypic behaviors are among the best discriminators of Frontotemporal Lobar Degeneration (FTLD). A recent preliminary report suggests many of the behavioral symptoms, including stereotypic behaviors in FTLD patients, respond to medication with selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors. However, there is no scale that evaluates stereotypic behaviors comprehensively. To assess the wide range of stereotypic behaviors encountered in FTLD, we developed a new instrument, the Stereotypy Rating Inventory (SRI). The SRI assesses five distinctive stereotypic behavioral

Tongue twisters: feeding enrichment to reduce oral stereotypy in giraffe.

Stereotypic behavior has been well-studied and documented in a variety of animals including primates, carnivores, and domesticated ungulates. However, very little information is known about stereotypic behavior of captive exotic ungulates. Giraffe have been found to perform a wide range of stereotypic behaviors. According to a survey of zoological institutions, oral stereotypies, specifically the licking of nonfood objects are the most prevalent stereotypic behaviors observed in giraffe. Their performance appears to be related to feeding and rumination and may be a result of the inability of a

Dissociation between spontaneously emitted and apomorphine-induced stereotypy in Peromyscus maniculatus bairdii.

Stereotyped behavior is repetitive, topographically invariant motor activity that lacks an obvious function. We have previously characterized the spontaneous and persistent stereotypies that occur in deer mice housed in standard laboratory cages. Providing these animals with enriched environments markedly reduces their vulnerability to develop stereotypic behavioral repertoires, thus enabling us to generate behaviorally distinct (stereotypic and nonstereotypic) mice of the same species. As stereotypic behaviors are readily induced by systemic administration of a dopamine (DA) agonist, the pres

Stereotyped beliefs about male and female OB-GYNS: relationship to provider choice and patient satisfaction.

BACKGROUND: Up to 60% of women prefer a female obstetrician-gynecologist (OB-GYN), perhaps in part due to holding negative stereotypes of male providers. However, provider gender stereotypes have not been directly examined. The purpose of the current studies was to evaluate women's stereotypes of male and female OB-GYN providers and the impact of these stereotypes on provider evaluations. METHODS: First, stereotypes of male and female OB-GYNs were elicited from 96 undergraduate women who described the attributes and behaviors of a typical male or female OB-GYN. Next, 126 undergraduate women w

The neural correlates of implicit theory violation.

The present study examined whether perceivers' implicit theories about the fixedness of intelligence would modulate neurophysiological responses to stereotype-violating and stereotype-confirming information. Brain activity was recorded using EEG as participants read a series of stereotype-confirming or stereotype-violating behaviors performed by a target character. Compared to incremental theorists (who believe that intelligence is malleable), entity theorists (who believe that intelligence is fixed) displayed more pronounced N400 responses to stereotype-violating behaviors. In contrast, incre

Evidence of stereotyped contact call use in narwhal (Monodon monoceros) mother-calf communication.

Narwhals (Monodon monoceros) are gregarious toothed whales that strictly reside in the high Arctic. They produce a broad range of signal types; however, studies of narwhal vocalizations have been mostly descriptive of the sounds available in the species' overall repertoire. Little is known regarding the functions of highly stereotyped mixed calls (i.e., biphonations with both sound elements produced simultaneously), although preliminary evidence has suggested that such vocalizations are individually distinctive and function as contact calls. Here we provide evidence that supports this notion i

Stereotype threat affects financial decision making.

The research presented in this article provides the first evidence that one's decision making can be influenced by concerns about stereotypes and the devaluation of one's identity. Many studies document gender differences in decision making, and often attribute these differences to innate and stable factors, such as biological and hormonal differences. In three studies, we found that stereotype threat affected decision making and led to gender differences in loss-aversion and risk-aversion behaviors. In Study 1, women subjected to stereotype threat in academic and business settings were more l

Ecology-driven stereotypes override race stereotypes.

Why do race stereotypes take the forms they do? Life history theory posits that features of the ecology shape individuals' behavior. Harsh and unpredictable ("desperate") ecologies induce fast strategy behaviors such as impulsivity, whereas resource-sufficient and predictable ("hopeful") ecologies induce slow strategy behaviors such as future focus. We suggest that individuals possess a lay understanding of ecology's influence on behavior, resulting in ecology-driven stereotypes. Importantly, because race is confounded with ecology in the United States, we propose that Americans' stereotypes a

Restricted and Repetitive Behavior and Brain Functional Connectivity in Infants at Risk for Developing Autism Spectrum Disorder.

BACKGROUND: Restricted and repetitive behaviors (RRBs), detectable by 12 months in many infants in whom autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is later diagnosed, may represent some of the earliest behavioral markers of ASD. However, brain function underlying the emergence of these key behaviors remains unknown. METHODS: Behavioral and resting-state functional connectivity (fc) magnetic resonance imaging data were collected from 167 children at high and low familial risk for ASD at 12 and 24 months (n = 38 at both time points). Twenty infants met criteria for ASD at 24 months. We divided RRBs into fo

Roxindole: psychopharmacological profile of a dopamine D2 autoreceptor agonist.

The putative, selective dopamine (DA) dopamine-2 autoreceptor agonist roxindole, which also exhibits serotonin-1A-agonistic and 5-hydroxytryptamine reuptake-inhibiting properties, was examined for its behavioral effects in rats and mice. Roxindole inhibited apomorphine-induced climbing in mice and stereotyped behavior in rats with ED50 values of 1.4 mg/kg s.c. and 0.65 mg/kg s.c., respectively, and inhibited conditioned avoidance response in rats (ED50 = 1.5 mg/kg s.c.). Thus roxindole showed a profile resembling those of the classical antipsychotic haloperidol and the atypical neuroleptic clo
