Stereotyped CLL-like immunoglobulin rearrangements in healthy repertoires: implications for leukemogenesis.

Chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) is characterized by a highly biased B-cell receptor (BcR) immunoglobulin repertoire and by recurrent stereotyped receptors defined as quasi-identical BcR recurring in unrelated patients. High-throughput sequencing studies have shown that immunoglobulin rearrangements resembling these CLL stereotypes can also be detected in healthy individuals. Beyond their relevance to leukemogenesis, these findings provide a distinctive opportunity to investigate how recurrent BcR configurations are generated, selected, and maintained during normal B-cell development. In thi

Obesity-Related Stereotypes, Biases, and Prejudices Among Academic Dental Professionals.

PURPOSE/OBJECTIVES: Shaped by societal emphasis on thinness, individuals with obesity encounter stereotypes, bias, and prejudice (SBP), which have been documented among healthcare professionals. This study examined obesity-related SBP among dental professionals in an academic setting, hypothesizing patterns similar to healthcare workers. METHODS: Faculty, staff, graduate students/residents, and students affiliated with the University of Iowa College of Dentistry in Fall 2024 were invited. A 37-item Qualtrics survey collected demographic information and assessed obesity-related SBP using the v

Gut microbiome is associated with stereotypic behavior of the giant panda (Ailuropoda melanoleuca).

The giant panda (Ailuropoda melanoleuca) is a relict species endemic to China. Captive breeding has boosted its population. However, some captive individuals exhibit stereotypic behavior. Though extensive research showing that host behavior can be influenced by gut microbiota via the gut-brain axis, the gut microbiota related to stereotypic behavior of giant pandas has not been reported. To explore gut microbial composition and functional characteristics of stereotypically behaving (SB) giant pandas, the behavior of 15 captive giant pandas was observed, and their feces were analyzed using 16S

Female psychiatrists on screen: Cinematic stereotypes and therapeutic authority, 1935-2021.

Throughout the 20th century, women entered psychiatry, yet cinematic representations remained structured by masculinised archetypes such as Dr Evil, Dr Wonderful, and Dr Dippy. This article interrogates depictions of female psychiatrists in nineteen films and one paradigmatic television series (1935-2021) through a historically grounded qualitative analysis. It identifies two gendered figures - Dr Correction and Dr Trapped - that reconfigure the masculine triad into a moral continuum of care, control and vulnerability. By situating these tropes within psychiatry's shifting professional and mor

Measuring prejudice and stereotypes: A systematic review of psychometric quality and conceptual foundations.

Prejudice and stereotypes are central constructs in social psychology, yet instruments used to measure them vary in conceptual clarity and psychometric evidence. This preregistered systematic review provides a comprehensive, cross-method synthesis of the psychometric properties and theoretical foundations of measures assessing racial and ethnic prejudice and stereotypes. Following PRISMA and COSMIN guidelines, we screened 13,363 records and included 263 studies published between 1951 and 2024. We evaluated reliability, validity, factor structure, measurement invariance and conceptual alignment

Spatially Stereotyped Microgliosis Tracks Synaptic Pathology in the Demyelinated Superior Colliculus.

Visual impairment is one of the most common and clinically salient manifestations of Multiple Sclerosis (MS), yet pathology across visual system structures remains incompletely defined. Although MS pathology has been extensively studied in the optic nerve, lateral geniculate nucleus, and visual cortex, involvement of the superior colliculus (SC), a key hub for visual processing, has not been systematically investigated. Here, we combined human postmortem tissue analysis with functional assessment and spatial mapping in the MS-relevant cuprizone (CPZ) mouse model to define how demyelination and

Transmission of societal stereotypes to individual-level prejudice through instrumental learning.

How are societal stereotypes transmitted to individual-level group preferences? We propose that exposure to a stereotype, regardless of whether one agrees with it, can shape how one experiences and learns from interactions with members of the stereotyped group, such that it induces individual-level prejudice-a process involving the interplay of semantic knowledge and instrumental learning. In a series of experiments, participants interacted with players from two groups, described with either positive or negative stereotypes, in a reinforcement learning (RL) task presented as a money-sharing ga

An investigation of the associations between trauma exposure, racial stereotypes, and racist beliefs.

OBJECTIVE: Given the concerning rise in hate crimes in recent years, it is critical to better understand factors associated with racist beliefs. As suggested by terror management theory (TMT), trauma exposure and posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) may activate existential distress and anxiety, which may strengthen worldviews, including prejudiced beliefs (Greenberg & Kosloff, 2008; Weise et al., 2012). Although PTSS include negative alterations in beliefs about other people and the world, the connection between trauma and racist beliefs has not been investigated. There may also be key differ

Gender and Media Representations: A Review of the Literature on Gender Stereotypes, Objectification and Sexualization.

Media representations play an important role in producing sociocultural pressures. Despite social and legal progress in civil rights, restrictive gender-based representations appear to be still very pervasive in some contexts. The article explores scientific research on the relationship between media representations and gender stereotypes, objectification and sexualization, focusing on their presence in the cultural context. Results show how stereotyping, objectifying and sexualizing representations appear to be still very common across a number of contexts. Exposure to stereotyping representa

Sparse and stereotyped encoding implicates a core glomerulus for ant alarm behavior.

Ants communicate via large arrays of pheromones and possess expanded, highly complex olfactory systems, with antennal lobes in the brain comprising up to ∼500 glomeruli. This expansion implies that odors could activate hundreds of glomeruli, which would pose challenges for higher-order processing. To study this problem, we generated transgenic ants expressing the genetically encoded calcium indicator GCaMP in olfactory sensory neurons. Using two-photon imaging, we mapped complete glomerular responses to four ant alarm pheromones. Alarm pheromones robustly activated ≤6 glomeruli, and activity m

Plasticity and Stereotypic Rewiring of the Transcriptome Upon Bacterial Evolution of Antibiotic Resistance.

Bacterial evolution of antibiotic resistance frequently has deleterious side effects on microbial growth, virulence, and susceptibility to other antimicrobial agents. However, it is unclear how these trade-offs could be utilized for manipulating antibiotic resistance in the clinic, not least because the underlying molecular mechanisms are poorly understood. Using laboratory evolution, we demonstrate that clinically relevant resistance mutations in Escherichia coli constitutively rewire a large fraction of the transcriptome in a repeatable and stereotypic manner. Strikingly, lineages adapted to

Stereotyped Relationship Between Motor and Cognitive Metabolic Networks in Parkinson's Disease.

BACKGROUND: Idiopathic Parkinson's disease (iPD) is associated with two distinct brain networks, PD-related pattern (PDRP) and PD-related cognitive pattern (PDCP), which correlate respectively with motor and cognitive symptoms. The relationship between the two networks in individual patients is unclear. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether a consistent relationship exists between these networks, we measured the difference between PDRP and PDCP expression, termed delta, on an individual basis in independent populations of patients with iPD (n = 356), patients with idiopathic REM sleep behavioral di

Stereotypes About Battered Women and Victim's Self-Defense: Legal Implications.

Recent research on the practices of justice operators with women victims of intimate partner violence has evidenced the existence of gender stereotypes and gender-blind practices in the Spanish legal system (Albertín et al., 2020; García Jiménez et al., 2019, 2020), as well as the graves consequences that such practices imply for these women. In this context, the present study explored the existence of a battered woman stereotype and its variation when the victim defends herself from the abuser. An opportunity sample of 505 undergraduates of Law, Psychology and other studies from two Spanish u

An analysis of stereotypical motor movements and cardiovascular coupling in individuals on the autism spectrum.

One of the core diagnostic features of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is engagement in stereotypical motor movements, although the etiology of this repetitive behavior is unknown. Since the 1960s, it has been hypothesized that stereotypical motor movements serve a homeostatic regulation function, and thereby a putative coupling mechanism to cardiovascular arousal. However, to date, surprisingly few reports explicitly assess cardio-somatic coupling and stereotypical motor movements. The present exploratory study investigates coupling of stereotypical body rocking and hand flapping to heart rate

Detection of Stereotypical Motor Movements in Autism using a Smartwatch-based System.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder that is often accompanied by stereotypical motor movements. Health professionals typically assess the severity of these behaviors during therapy, which limits observations to a structured clinical setting. Recent advancements in ubiquitous computing and wearable sensors enable an ability to monitor these motor movements objectively and in real-time while children with ASD are in different environments. In this paper, we present a smartwatch-based system designed to detect stereotypical motor movements. To validate the feasibility

Gender stereotypes in psychosocial care for female crack and powder cocaine users.

The study analyzed health professionals' conceptions toward female users of crack and powder cocaine currently receiving psychosocial care, based on a gender perspective. Seventeen health professionals were interviewed, and systematic observations were made of the spaces for collective care in a Center for Psychosocial Care specializing in alcohol and drug addiction in Greater Metropolitan Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Analysis of the interviews and field diaries using the hermeneutic-dialectic method revealed three categories: frailty as a constitutive attribute of women's condition, the women's em

Stereotyped responses of Drosophila peptidergic neuronal ensemble depend on downstream neuromodulators.

Neuropeptides play a key role in the regulation of behaviors and physiological responses including alertness, social recognition, and hunger, yet, their mechanism of action is poorly understood. Here, we focus on the endocrine control ecdysis behavior, which is used by arthropods to shed their cuticle at the end of every molt. Ecdysis is triggered by ETH (Ecdysis triggering hormone), and we show that the response of peptidergic neurons that produce CCAP (crustacean cardioactive peptide), which are key targets of ETH and control the onset of ecdysis behavior, depends fundamentally on the action

Pretreatment or Posttreatment with Aripiprazole Attenuates Methamphetamine-induced Stereotyped Behavior in Mice.

Aripiprazole is a third-generation atypical antipsychotic and a dopamine D2 receptor partial agonist. In the present study, we investigated whether a single administration of aripiprazole to mice, either as a pretreatment or as a posttreatment, would affect stereotypy induced by methamphetamine (METH). Pretreatment of male ICR mice with aripiprazole (1 or 10 mg/kg, i.p.) attenuated the incidence of METH-induced stereotypical behavior in a dose-dependent manner. Pretreatment of mice with 1 mg/kg aripiprazole produced an increase in the locomotor activity in mice treated with METH compared with
