BACKGROUND: Non-Cirrhotic Portal Hypertension (NCPH) is a rare but potentially fatal liver disorder described in patients treated with anti-retroviral therapy for Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). In particular, the most important predisposing factor to its development has been identified as prolonged exposure to Didanosine (ddI). The clinical entity of NCPH is characterized by an increase in portal pressure due to pre- or intra-hepatic causes, in absence of liver cirrhosis. However, the exact pathogenesis remains poorly understood, and due to its rarity, the diagnosis is often delayed.

Streptococcosis causes massive tilapia kills, which results in heavy economic losses of tilapia farming industry. Out of the Streptococcosis, Streptococcus agalactiae is the major pathogen. The bacterium causes higher mortality of tilapias in higher than lower temperatures. However, effect of temperature on metabolic regulation which is related to the mortality is largely unknown. The present study showed 50% and 70% mortality of tilapias cultured in 25 °C and 30 °C, respectively, in comparison with no death in 20 °C following infection caused by S. agalactiae. Then, GC/MS based metabolomics w

INTRODUCTION: Streptococcus agalactiae (group B streptococcus; GBS) is globally recognised as one of the leading causes of neonatal sepsis and meningitis. It also causes adverse pregnancy outcomes such as stillbirth and miscarriages. Incidence of invasive disease is increasing in non-pregnant adults with underlying medical conditions (e.g., diabetes mellitus). Epidemiological studies of GBS infections are based on capsular serotyping. Genotyping of the surface anchored protein genes is also becoming an important tool for GBS studies. Currently ten different GBS serotypes have been identified.

We present 2 patients with Streptococcus agalactiae toxic shock-like syndrome and review another 11 well-reported cases from the literature. Streptococcal toxic shock-like syndrome is a devastating illness with a high mortality rate, therefore we stress the importance of early supportive management, antimicrobial therapy, and surgical intervention. Toxic shock-like syndrome is likely to be underestimated in patients with invasive Streptococcus agalactiae infection who present with shock. Early diagnosis requires high suspicion of the illness, along with a thorough mucocutaneous examination. St

Streptococcus agalactiae is a multi-host pathogen and a major threat to aquaculture, particularly tilapia production. This study characterised the serotype distribution and virulence gene profiles of 97 S. agalactiae isolates obtained from non-tilapia freshwater species in Vietnam, including carp species not previously recognised as hosts, namely black carp, grass carp and common carp. Three serotypes were identified among non-tilapia isolates, Ia (44.3%), III (39.2%) and Ib (16.5%). Virulence gene distributions varied substantially within and between serotypes; however, all isolates consisten

INTRODUCTION: Streptococcus agalactiae, also known as group B streptococci (GBS), is associated with invasive infections in neonates. Identification of GBS vaginal colonization in pregnant women before delivery is essential for treatment with antibiotics to prevent intrapartum vertical transmission to the newborn. This study was designed to evaluate applicability of two rapid real-time PCRs in comparison to standard culture identification.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: We compared the Xpert GBS assay, hereafter referred to as Xpert, and GenomEra GBS PCR, hereafter referred to as GenomEra. The standar

BACKGROUND: Group B Streptococcus (GBS) is a causative agent of various infections in newborns, immunocompromised (especially diabetic) non-pregnant adults, and pregnant women. Antibiotic resistance profiling can provide insights into the use of antibiotic prophylaxis against potential GBS infections. Virulence factors are responsible for host-bacteria interactions, pathogenesis, and biofilm development strategies. The aim of this study was to determine the biofilm formation capacity, presence of virulence genes, and antibiotic susceptibility patterns of clinical GBS isolates.
RESULTS: The re

A 70-year-old male patient was admitted to the emergency room in cardiac arrest. The patient was resuscitated and then referred to our cardiac surgery department, where he was diagnosed with suspected effusive constrictive pericarditis. A failed trial of TEE-guided pericardiocentesis led to the decision of surgical intervention. Sternotomy was performed and revealed pericardial thickening and very dense adhesions involving the pericardium and both pleurae, suggesting a neoplastic disease. An extensive pericardiectomy and bilateral pleural decortication were performed. After surgery, the patien

BACKGROUND: Bacterial meningitis (BM) is an inflammation of the meninges, associated with the invasion of bacteria. The etiologic agents vary by age group. BM because of Group B streptococcus (GBS) is common for the neonatal period but considered as rare in adult patients. Acute BM can have various presentations and adverse effects, such as ischemic stroke in 10% to 29% of the cases.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to present a rare case of GBS meningitis presented with cerebral infarction (CI) in an adult patient and to make a brief review of the etiology and incidence of GBS infections in adult

Toxic shock-like syndrome (TSLS) is a life-threatening hyperinflammatory complication caused by Streptococcus species infections. We reported the first case of TSLS caused by primary bacteremia of Streptococcus agalactiae during chemotherapy for multiple myeloma. A 74-year-old woman, who received combination chemotherapy of elotuzumab, pomalidomide, and dexamethasone for treatment-refractory multiple myeloma, was transported to our hospital under comatose and septic shock. Her blood culture detected Streptococcus agalactiae, and considering the progressive multiorgan failure, she was diagnosed

Streptococcus agalactiae (Sta) of Lancefield group B is the primary etiological agent of bacterial meningitis in Nile tilapia and newborn humans. Thus, the study of this disease is of fundamental importance for aquaculture and human medicine. Additionally, elucidation of the mechanisms involved in the host-pathogenic response is important for the success of new therapies. In the present study, we elucidated important aspects of the innate immune response in the brain tissue of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) infected by Sta. The neuroinflammatory process in the meninges started with the m

BACKGROUND We present a case of a 24-year-old woman with type 1- diabetes mellitus who developed necrotizing fasciitis (NF) due to Streptococcus agalactiae after a recent colposcopy. Literature review suggests this as the first case to be reported. CASE REPORT The patient initially presented to the emergency department (ED) with right lower neck pain and spasm of the right sternocleidomastoid muscle (SCM), with decreased range of motion. She was diagnosed with torticollis and was sent home on a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug and spasmolytic. She returned 5 days later because of a lack of

Streptococcus agalactiae or Group B Streptococcus (GBS) is the major pathogen causing pneumonia and meningitis in human, mastitis in dairy cows, and streptococcal disease in tilapia. Previous studies have shown that fish GBS strains are correlated with human GBS strains in evolution and might have cross-host infection ability. Although the invasive disease caused by ST1 GBS in non-pregnant adults and cows is increasing worldwide, infection of fish by ST1 GBS has not been reported. The aim of this study was to determine whether ST1 GBS was virulent in fish and to investigate the genomic charact

We investigated the antibiotic and heavy-metal resistance mechanisms, virulence genes and clonal relationships of macrolide- and/or lincosamide-resistant (M+/-LR) Streptococcus agalactiae (group B Streptococcus, GBS) isolates from pregnant women in La Rioja in Northern Spain, a region with a significant immigrant population. In total 375 GBS isolates were recovered during 2011. About three-quarters of isolates were from European nationals and the remainder distributed among 23 other nationalities. Seventy-five (20%) were classified as M+/-LR strains and 28 (37%) of these were resistant to ⩾3 c

Streptococcus agalactiae (group B Streptococcus, GBS) is the predominant cause of early-onset infectious disease in neonates and is responsible for life-threatening infections in elderly and immunocompromised individuals. Clinical manifestations of GBS infection include sepsis, pneumonia, and meningitis. Here, we describe BspA, a deviant antigen I/II family polypeptide that confers adhesive properties linked to pathogenesis in GBS. Heterologous expression of BspA on the surface of the non-adherent bacterium Lactococcus lactis confers adherence to scavenger receptor gp340, human vaginal epithel

Streptococcus agalactiae, a colonizing agent in pregnant women and the main cause of neonatal sepsis and meningitis, has been increasingly associated with invasive disease in nonpregnant adults. We collected a total of 87 non-repetitive S. agalactiae isolates causing community-acquired (CA) and hospital-acquired (HA) infections in nonpregnant adults from a teaching hospital in Shanghai between 2009 and 2013. We identified and characterized their antibiotic resistance, sequence type (ST), serotype, virulence, and biofilm formation. The most frequent STs were ST19 (29.9%), ST23 (16.1%), ST12 (13
