BACKGROUND: Submandibular masses are mostly secondary to sialolithiasis. Salivary gland tumors should be considered in the differential diagnosis. In this case report, an unusual cause of Warthin's duct obstruction caused by an accessory salivary gland tissue is presented.
METHODS: Sialography revealed the submandibular accessory salivary gland.
RESULTS: Submandibular gland excision was performed and histopathologic investigation showed the accessory salivary tissue, which was narrowing the Warthin's duct.

OBJECTIVE: Investigate the recovery of the submandibular gland function following transoral sialolithectomy.
METHODS: The glandular function of 26 patients who received the transoral sialolithectomy were investigated by sequential scintigraphy with 99m Tc pertechetate.
RESULTS: Most glandular function recovers normal in short time after operation. Glandular infection, calculus diameter and patients's age could influence the recovery of function.

The technique described for the removal of an adenoma in the submandibular gland through an oral-transmuscular approach is based upon the description of Wassmund and Trauner. Neurofibroma affecting the major salivary gland is uncommon. This tumour is particularly rare in the submandibular and sublingual gland. Here, a case of solitary plexiform neurofibroma of the submandibular gland without any other manifestations of von Recklinghausen's disease is presented. It is probably the first case report of this tumour invading the submandibular gland in a solitary form.

We report here the sialographic appearances of the submandibular gland in both primary and secondary Sjögren's syndrome (SS). In order to compare these with those of the parotid gland, we defined new criteria for the staging for SS based on the degree of depiction of the peripheral ducts. In 24 out of 74 cases the submandibular sialogram showed more advanced, destructive disease compared with the parotid. This study suggests that although SS involves the parotid gland first, it progresses in the submandibular gland more rapidly.

This morphologic study compares the regenerative response in submandibular gland (SMG) autografts placed in the tongues of previously sympathectomized rats to autografts placed in tongues of sham-sympathectomized rats. Early effects of alloxan on structure and function of rat submandibular gland were investigated by light and electron microscopy, X-ray microanalysis, and by analysis of secreted saliva. We report an unusual case of carcinoma ex pleomorphic adenoma (CXPA) in the submandibular gland. The mass had a unique calcification. Panoramic tomography revealed sponge-like calcification. Sialolithiasis is a disease process involving the formation of conglomerates of calcifications in the ductal system or the parenchyma of the salivary gland. The Submandibular gland is more vulnerable to form sialoliths than the other major salivary glands due to its salivary composition and anatomic factors. The management of sialolithiasis is determined by the dimensions and position of the calculi. Here, we discuss a case of a twenty eight mm submandibular sialolith managed by an intraoral approach.
