Ankyloglossia is an anomaly that is characterized by the abnormal insertion of the lingual frenulum that hinders protrusion and elevation of the tongue towards the palate, due to the short and thick composition of the frenulum. In babies it can cause inefficient nursing at the mother's breast, inadequate transfer of milk and pain in the mother's breast, resulting in early weaning and weight loss. An 8-month-old baby boy was brought to the clinic by his mother because he found it difficult to suck and consequently avoiding breast feeding, and was apparently losing weight. During the clinical ex

The nutritional needs of developing young place a large energetic demand on lactating females. In this paper some of the mechanisms through which lactating rats meet these demands are described. Emphasis is placed on the mechanisms that drive increased food intake in suckled rats that are independent of milk delivery and negative energy balance. Evidence is presented to suggest that prolactin (PRL), released from the pituitary in response to suckling stimulation, acts centrally to stimulate food intake during lactation. Brain areas in which PRL may act to stimulate food intake as well as its i

The adaptive movement of the tongue after unilateral lesion of the hypoglossal (XII) nerve during the early postnatal days is essential for recovery of milk intake. The present study investigated the basic mechanisms underlying such adaptation, focusing on the neural plasticity that allows effective suckling. After resection of the ipsilateral XII nerve on P1, 1,1'-dioctadecyl-3,3,3',3'-tetramethylindocarbocyanine perchlolate (DiI), a postmortem neuronal tracer, was applied to the contralateral uninjured XII nerve on P4 and P7. DiI-labeled fibers were traced successfully within the tongue and

PURPOSE: Ankyloglossia ("tongue-tie") occurs in nearly 5% of neonates, but its clinical significance relating to breast-feeding difficulties is controversial. We tested the hypothesis that in infants with ankyloglossia referred because of breast-feeding difficulties, frenotomy alleviates the symptoms.
METHODS: Twenty-five mothers of healthy infants with ankyloglossia were recruited because of sore nipples. Infants were randomized to either of 2 sequences: (1) frenotomy, breast-feeding, sham, breast-feeding (n = 14) or (2) sham, breast-feeding, frenotomy, breast-feeding (n = 11). The mothers a

The structural organization of the 'callosal' OBg was studied in Nissl and Weil stained sections of two human brains completely lacking in the corpus callosum. OBg of the normal brain contains a set of distinctive large pyramidal cells in layer III. By contrast, in the brains with absence of the corpus callosum, layer III of OBg contained a slightly reduced number of smaller pyramidal cells than normal, and the characteristic large pyramidal cells were scarsely detectable. Other layers of OBg were not definitely changed. Furthermore, 'acallosal' striate cortex revealed no specific changes. Fro

Primiparous mothers and their infants who had an extra 15-20 minutes' suckling and skin to skin contact during the first hour after delivery, behaved differently at 36 hours post partum compared with a control group without this extra contact. The present study is a 3-month follow-up of these mothers and infants by means of direct observation of mother-infant free play and a personal interview with the mothers. Mothers in the extra contact group spent more time kissing and looking en face at their infants; these infants smiled more often and cried less frequently. A greater proportion of the m

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to measure the effectiveness of frenotomy in ankyloglossic infants, by quantifying the changes in latch and maternal nipple pain using standardized tools.
METHODOLOGY: Infants below 12 weeks of age were recruited from the Goldfarb Breastfeeding Program between August 2004 and February 2005. Infants were selected based on the Frenotomy Decision Rule for Breastfeeding Infants (FDRBI), a new clinical tool for future validation. Latch was assessed using the Latch Tool. Maternal nipple pain was assessed using R. Melzack's Short Form McGill Pain Questionnaire, c

The ability of rat pups depleted of brain dopamine (DA) at either 3 or 15 days of age to increase fluid intake in response to intracellular dehydration was studied. Despite near-total depletions of striatal DA, animals depleted at either age ingested normal amounts of fluid even as soon as 3-7 days after incurring the brain damage. The effects of DA receptor blockade on ingestion and motor function were also studied. Haloperidol had markedly different effects as a function of the age at which the depletions were sustained. Weanlings that were depleted of DA at 3 days of age failed to exhibit t

The aim of the study was to determine the effect of rehabilitation of feeding function on eye/hand coordination and speech development in cerebral palsied children. The analysis included 28 children with tetraplegic form of cerebral palsy. Age of these children was from 12 to 48 months (in one case 6 months, the other case 6 years). In the first examination, standard deviations in independent feeding function (according to "feeding test") were established as well as the level of eye/hand coordination and speech development (according to Denver Developmental Screening Test). All cerebral palsie

In recent years, occurrence of "general paresis (GP)" has increased significantly because of the increasing incidence of syphilis in China. Early diagnosis plays a very important role for effective treatment. Incidence is becoming extensive enough to warrant an updated investigation of the clinical characteristics of GP. The authors retrospectively reviewed 116 cases of GP in Guangzhou, China, and analyzed its incidence and clinical appearance, as well as the characteristics of EEG, neuroradiology, serum, and cerebrospinal fluid examinations. Of the 116 GP patients, clinical symptoms presented

In order to systematically study the predatory behavior and digestion regularity of spiders, real-time fluorescence quantification PCR technique was used to detect the number of CO-I genes in Pardosa pseudoannulata after it preyed on rice planthoppers in different temperatures within different periods. At 28 °C, 0, 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, and 24 h after P. pseudoannulata preyed on rich planthopper, DNA was extracted from cephalothorax and abdomen of P. pseudoannulata. Routine PCR and real-time fluorescence PCR techniques were employed for CO-I gene amplification. The results show that: The prey liquid

Sap-sucking insects, represented by the globally distributed leafhoppers, have evolved a wide range of adaptive traits and play multiple ecological roles. However, their successful survival strategies in nature remain poorly understood. To explore the adaptive mechanisms of sap-sucking insects, we established a research system using three representative leafhopper species from the same family and found that they have acquired multiple cholesterol-dependent cytolysins (CDCs) derived from gram-positive bacterial genes. Furthermore, we demonstrated that these CDCs have been domesticated and co-ev

Belching is physiological venting of excessive gastric air. Excessive and bothersome belching is a common symptom, which is often seen in patients with functional dyspepsia and gastroesophageal reflux disease. Other symptoms are usually predominant. However, a small group of patients complain of isolated excessive belching, with a frequency of several belches per minute. In these patients, the eructated air does not originate from the stomach but is sucked or injected in the esophagus from the pharynx and expelled immediately afterward in oral direction. This behavior is called supragastric be

Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS) is a highly variable genetic disorder affecting multiple body systems whose most consistent major manifestations include hypotonia with poor suck and poor weight gain in infancy; mild mental retardation, hypogonadism, growth hormone insufficiency causing short stature for the family, early childhood-onset hyperphagia and obesity, characteristic appearance, and behavioral and sometimes psychiatric disturbance. Many more minor characteristics can be helpful in diagnosis and important in management. PWS is an example of a genetic condition involving genomic imprinting.

Bemisia tabaci is a destructive agricultural pest with a remarkable capacity to exploit diverse host plants. Horizontally transferred genes (HTGs) have recently been implicated in this adaptive success, yet the functions of most HTGs in the whitefly remain unclear. Feeding behavior is crucial for nutrient acquisition and reproduction in piercing-sucking insects, but whether HTGs contribute to host adaptation by regulating feeding remains largely unknown. Here, we identified BtHCYP, a plant-derived HGT gene in B. tabaci encoding a cysteine protease. Biochemical and in vivo assays confirmed that

Teeth and periodontal mechanoreceptors play important roles in regulating jaw movements during mastication. However, little is known concerning how jaw movements develop without tooth eruption. To answer this question, we studied masticatory behavior in the osteopetrotic mouse, where tooth eruption does not occur and periodontal mechanoreceptors are missing. A masticatory sequence of the osteopetrotic mouse was divided into two stages: incision and chewing. Incision is characterized by small amplitude and rapid (7 Hz) open-close jaw movements, while slow (5 Hz) and large amplitude open-close j
