Nitrite Causes Nitrosative Stress to Iron Sulfur Clusters.

Nitric oxide (NO), produced by nitrite reductases or nitric oxide synthases, performs vital roles in signaling and the immune response. Iron sulfur (FeS) clusters are known targets for NO induced degradation, serving as sensors to trigger cellular responses. However, this FeS reactivity is proposed as NO specific, with no demonstrated reactivity toward nitrite, a soluble NO storage molecule. We demonstrate that synthetic FeS clusters supported by various ligands undergo facile nitrosylation by nitrite in the presence of a reductant, evidencing the nitrite reductase reactivity for FeS clusters.

3-Mercaptopyruvate sulfur transferase is a protein persulfidase.

Protein S-persulfidation (P-SSH) is recognized as a common posttranslational modification. It occurs under basal conditions and is often observed to be elevated under stress conditions. However, the mechanism(s) by which proteins are persulfidated inside cells have remained unclear. Here we report that 3-mercaptopyruvate sulfur transferase (MPST) engages in direct protein-to-protein transpersulfidation reactions beyond its previously known protein substrates thioredoxin and MOCS3/Uba4, associated with H2S generation and transfer RNA thiolation, respectively. We observe that depletion of MPST i

Organelle-Targeted Fluorescent Probes for Sulfane Sulfur Species.

Sulfane sulfurs, which include hydropersulfides (RSSH), hydrogen polysulfides (H2Sn, n > 1), and polysulfides (RSnR, n > 2), play important roles in cellular redox biology and are closely linked to hydrogen sulfide (H2S) signaling. While most studies on sulfane sulfur detection have focused on sulfane sulfurs in the whole cell, increasing the recognition of the effects of reactive sulfur species on the functions of various subcellular organelles has emerged. This has driven a need for organelle-targeted detection methods. However, the detection of sulfane sulfurs, particularly of RSSH and H2Sn

Sulfur Dioxide: An Emerging Signaling Molecule in Plants.

Sulfur dioxide (SO2) has long been viewed as toxic gas and air pollutant, but now is being verified as a signaling molecule in mammalian cells. SO2 can be endogenously produced and rapidly transformed into sulfur-containing compounds (e.g., hydrogen sulfide, cysteine, methionine, glutathione, glucosinolate, and phytochelatin) to maintain its homeostasis in plant cells. Exogenous application of SO2 in the form of gas or solution can trigger the expression of thousands of genes. The physiological functions of these genes are involved in the antioxidant defense, osmotic adjustment, and synthesis

Effects of Manganese Porphyrins on Cellular Sulfur Metabolism.

Manganese porphyrins (MnPs), MnTE-2-PyP5+, MnTnHex-2-PyP5+ and MnTnBuOE-2-PyP5+, are superoxide dismutase (SOD) mimetics and form a redox cycle between O2 and reductants, including ascorbic acid, ultimately producing hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). We previously found that MnPs oxidize hydrogen sulfide (H2S) to polysulfides (PS; H2Sn, n = 2-6) in buffer. Here, we examine the effects of MnPs for 24 h on H2S metabolism and PS production in HEK293, A549, HT29 and bone marrow derived stem cells (BMDSC) using H2S (AzMC, MeRho-AZ) and PS (SSP4) fluorophores. All MnPs decreased intracellular H2S production

Room-temperature superconductivity in a carbonaceous sulfur hydride.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

One of the long-standing challenges in experimental physics is the observation of room-temperature superconductivity1,2. Recently, high-temperature conventional superconductivity in hydrogen-rich materials has been reported in several systems under high pressure3-5. An  important discovery leading to room-temperature superconductivity is the pressure-driven disproportionation of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) to H3S, with a confirmed transition temperature of 203 kelvin at 155 gigapascals3,6. Both H2S and CH4 readily mix with hydrogen to form guest-host structures at lower pressures7, and are of  comp

Global Sulfur Dioxide Emissions and the Driving Forces.

The presence of sulfur dioxide (SO2) in the air is a global concern because of its severe environmental and public health impacts. Recent evidence from satellite observations shows rapid changes in the spatial distribution of global SO2 emissions, but such features are generally missing in global emission inventories that use a bottom-up method due to the lack of up-to-date information, especially in developing countries. Here, we rely on the latest data available on emission activities, control measures, and emission factors to estimate global SO2 emissions for the period 1960-2014 on a 0.1°

Sulfur dioxide: a physiologic endothelium-derived relaxing factor.

The gasotransmitter nitric oxide was classified as the first endothelium-derived relaxant factor, and opened a new era in cardiovascular research. Another small gas, sulfur dioxide (SO₂), can also be generated endogenously in mammals. Recent studies have shown that SO₂ may play important roles in the cardiovascular system. At low concentrations, the vasodilatory effect of SO₂ is endothelium-dependent. The vasodilation induced by an endothelium-derived relaxant factor is achieved by the opening of potassium channels, and hyperpolarization of the membranes of vascular smooth muscle cells. This f

Desulphurization characteristics of bamboo charcoal from sulfur solution.

Sulfur powder and sulfur dioxide (SO2) often floated in air, produced acid rain and algal blooms, and could cause diseases. Bamboo charcoal could have adsorption and filtration properties. In order to figure out the optimal adsorption condition and the intrinsic change of the bamboo charcoal, five chemicals were adsorbed by bamboo charcoal and were analyzed by FT-IR. Fe2(SO4)3's, Na2SO4's, Na2S2O8's, S's, and Na2SO3's optimal adsorption condition was the concentration of 19 g/1000 g and stir time of 20 min, 21 g/1000 g and stir time of 60 min, 7 g/1000 g and stir time of 120 min, 11 g/1000 g a

Plant sulfur nutrition: From Sachs to Big Data.

Together with water and carbon dioxide plants require 14 essential mineral nutrients to finish their life cycle. The research in plant nutrition can be traced back to Julius Sachs, who was the first to experimentally prove the essentiality of mineral nutrients for plants. Among those elements Sachs showed to be essential is sulfur. Plant sulfur nutrition has been not as extensively studied as the nutrition of nitrogen and phosphate, probably because sulfur was not limiting for agriculture. However, with the reduction of atmospheric sulfur dioxide emissions sulfur deficiency has become common.

Ship-plume sulfur chemistry: ITCT 2K2 case study.

The ship-plume sulfur chemistry was investigated for the ITCT 2K2 (Intercontinental Transport and Chemical Transformation 2002) ship-plume experiment, using the ship-plume photochemical/dynamic model developed in this study. In order to evaluate the performance of the model, the model-predicted mixing ratios of SO2 and H2SO4 were compared with those observed. From these comparisons, it was found that the model-predicted levels were in reasonable agreements with those observed (0.56≤R≤0.71), when the pH of sea-salt particles (pHss) was ≤~6.5. The ship-plume equivalent lifetimes of SO2 (τ(eq)(SO

Genotoxic effects of sulfur dioxide in human lymphocytes.

Sulfur dioxide (SO2), which is used as food preservative in apricot sulfurization and several fabricated foods, is a common air pollutant. The aim of this study was to reveal the possible genotoxic effects of SO2 using in vitro human lymphocytes. The different endpoints of genotoxicity: sister chromatid exchange (SCE), micronuclei (MN) tests and cell growth kinetics such as mitotic index (MI) and replication index (RI) were studied. The cells were treated with 0.1, 0.5 and 1.0 ppm concentrations of SO2. It was shown that SO2 caused significant increases in the frequency of SCE and MN in the mi

China's functioning market for sulfur dioxide scrubbing technologies.

Countries' differing positions in technology transfer have been a barrier in climate negotiations. Developed countries want market-based solutions with effective protection of intellectual property rights, whereas developing countries look for external support and nonmarket solutions. Although China has shared common negotiation positions with other developing countries, it has actually relied heavily on markets to acquire foreign technologies. This paper systematically examines the case of sulfur dioxide (SO(2)) scrubbing technologies, with first-hand information from the author's field inter

Endogenous generation of sulfur dioxide in rat tissues.

While sulfur dioxide (SO(2)) has been previously known for its toxicological effects, it is now known to be produced endogenously in mammals from sulfur-containing amino acid L-cysteine. L-cysteine is catalyzed by cysteine dioxygenase (CDO) to L-cysteinesulfinate, which converts to β-sulfinylpyruvate through transamination by aspartate aminotransferase (AAT), and finally spontaneously decomposes to pyruvate and SO(2). The present study explored endogenous SO(2) production, and AAT and CDO distribution in different rat tissue. SO(2) content was highest in stomach, followed by tissues in the rig

Are we getting enough sulfur in our diet?

Sulfur, after calcium and phosphorus, is the most abundant mineral element found in our body. It is available to us in our diets, derived almost exclusively from proteins, and yet only 2 of the 20 amino acids normally present in proteins contains sulfur. One of these amino acids, methionine, cannot be synthesized by our bodies and therefore has to be supplied by the diet. Cysteine, another sulfur containing amino acid, and a large number of key metabolic intermediates essential for life, are synthesized by us, but the process requires a steady supply of sulfur.Proteins contain between 3 and 6%

Sulfite oxidase protects plants against sulfur dioxide toxicity.

The gaseous pollutant SO(2) readily reacts with water to form sulfite that impacts deleteriously on animal and plant health. By modulating the level of sulfite oxidase (SO) that catalyzes the transformation of sulfites to the non-toxic sulfate, we show that Arabidopsis and tomato plants can be rendered resistant or susceptible to SO(2)/sulfite. Plants in which sulfite oxidase expression was abrogated by RNA interference (RNAi) accumulated relatively less sulfate after SO(2) application and showed enhanced induction of senescence and wounding-associated transcripts, leaf necrosis and chlorophyl

A sulfur dioxide climate feedback on early Mars.

Ancient Mars had liquid water on its surface and a CO2-rich atmosphere. Despite the implication that massive carbonate deposits should have formed, these have not been detected. On the basis of fundamental chemical and physical principles, we propose that climatic conditions enabling the existence of liquid water were maintained by appreciable atmospheric concentrations of volcanically degassed SO2 and H2S. The geochemistry resulting from equilibration of this atmosphere with the hydrological cycle is shown to inhibit the formation of carbonates. We propose an early martian climate feedback in

Volatile organic sulfur compounds in a stratified lake.

Three volatile organic sulfur compounds (VOSCs), dimethyl sulfide (DMS), carbon disulfide (CS(2)), and dimethyl disulfide (DMDS), were detected in the stratified water column of a lake (Linsley Pond) in Connecticut. The compounds DMS and DMDS appeared in both the oxic and the anoxic portions of the water column, CS(2) was primarily found in anoxic hypolimnion. Algal metabolism and/or bacterial degradation of sulfur-containing amino acids or other organic materials are potential sources of VOSCs in the oxic lake water.
