Characterization of the bacterial microbiota composition and evolution at different intestinal tract in wild pigs (Sus scrofa ussuricus).

Commensal microorganisms are essential to the normal development and function of many aspects of animal biology, including digestion, nutrient absorption, immunological development, behaviors, and evolution. The specific microbial composition and evolution of the intestinal tracts of wild pigs remain poorly characterized. This study therefore sought to assess the composition, distribution, and evolution of the intestinal microbiome of wild pigs. For these analyses, 16S rRNA V3-V4 regions from five gut sections prepared from each of three wild sows were sequenced to detect the microbiome compos

Effects of intramuscularly administered enrofloxacin on the susceptibility of commensal intestinal Escherichia coli in pigs (sus scrofa domestica).

BACKGROUND: In the European Union, various fluoroquinolones are authorised for the treatment of food producing animals. Each administration poses an increased risk of development and spread of antimicrobial resistance. The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of parenteral administration of enrofloxacin on the prevalence of enrofloxacin and ciprofloxacin susceptibilities in the commensal intestinal E. coli population. METHODS: E. coli isolates from faeces of twelve healthy pigs were included. Six pigs were administered enrofloxacin on day 1 to 3 and after two weeks for further thre

Evaluation of ELISA coupled with Western blot as a surveillance tool for Trichinella infection in wild boar (Sus scrofa).

Trichinella surveillance in wildlife relies on muscle digestion of large samples which are logistically difficult to store and transport in remote and tropical regions as well as labour-intensive to process. Serological methods such as enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISAs) offer rapid, cost-effective alternatives for surveillance but should be paired with additional tests because of the high false-positive rates encountered in wildlife. We investigated the utility of ELISAs coupled with Western blot (WB) in providing evidence of Trichinella exposure or infection in wild boar. Serum sampl

Molecular and structural assessment of alveolar bone during tooth eruption and function in the miniature pig, sus scrofa.

The development of alveolar bone adjacent to the tooth root during tooth eruption is not well understood. This study tested the hypothesis that predominantly woven bone forms adjacent to tooth roots during tooth eruption, but that this immature structure transitions to lamellar bone when the tooth comes into function. Additionally, bone resorption was predicted to play a key role in transitioning immature bone to more mature, load-bearing tissue. Miniature pigs were compared at two occlusal stages, 13 weeks (n = 3), corresponding with the mucosal penetration stage of M(1) tooth eruption, and 2

The impact of ischemic intervals on neuromuscular recovery in a porcine (Sus scrofa) survival model of extremity vascular injury.

BACKGROUND: Despite advances in revascularization following extremity vascular injury, the relationship between time to restoration of flow and functional limb salvage is unknown. The objectives of this study are to describe a large animal survival model of hind limb ischemia/reperfusion and define neuromuscular recovery following increasing ischemic periods. METHODS: Sus scrofa swine (N = 38; weight, 87 ± 6.2 kg) were randomized to iliac artery occlusion for 0 (Control), 1 (1HR), 3 (3HR), or 6 (6HR) hours, followed by vessel repair and 14 days of recovery. Additionally, one group underwent i

Validating the effectiveness of alternative euthanasia techniques using penetrating captive bolt guns in mature swine (Sus scrofa domesticus).

Euthanasia of mature swine is challenging. Temporal and behind-the-ear locations are two sites that have been identified as alternatives to the more commonly used frontal placement. In stage one, the effectiveness of two penetrating captive bolt gun styles (cylinder or pistol) was evaluated using frontal, temporal, and behind-the-ear placement in anesthetized mature swine (n = 36; weight: 267 ± 41 kg). For stage one, when evaluating treatment efficacy by sex, the cylinder-style equipment was 100% effective in achieving death when applied to all cranial locations (frontal, temporal, and behind-

Idiopathic pulmonary arterial hypertension in a pot-bellied pig (Sus scrofa domesticus) with right-sided congestive heart failure.

Idiopathic pulmonary arterial hypertension is a rare disease reported in humans and dogs diagnosed as persistent elevation of pulmonary arterial blood pressure without predisposing or associated diseases. A four-month-old pot-bellied pig (Sus scrofa domesticus) was presented for decreased appetite, lethargy, respiratory distress, and occasional syncope. On physical examination, the pig was tachypneic with labored breathing, with a distended abdomen and a bilateral grade 4-5/6 parasternal systolic heart murmur. Systolic pulmonary arterial pressure was estimated at 95 mmHg by Doppler echocardiog

Detection of Extended- Spectrum Beta-Lactamase producing Escherichia coli from mesenteric lymph nodes of wild boars (Sus scrofa).

Wild boars (Sus scrofa) are increasing in several European countries, including Italy. In areas with intensive animal farming, like the Italian Emilia-Romagna region, they are likely to be exposed to antimicrobialresistant (AMR) bacteria of livestock origin. In 2017-2018, 108 mesenteric lymph nodes samples were collected from 108 wild boars hunted in Parma province, Emilia-Romagna region, to be tested for ESBL- and carbapenemase-producing Escherichia coli. One isolate (WB-21L) out of 108 (0.9%) was phenotypically confirmed as ESBLproducing E. coli. The strain WB-21L was tested by PCR for the g

Detection of Brucella suis, Campylobacter jejuni, and Escherichia coli Strains in Feral Pig (Sus scrofa) Communities of Georgia.

Feral pigs (Sus scrofa) are an environmentally destructive invasive species that act as a reservoir for zoonotic pathogens. The aim of this study was to determine the presence of Brucella suis, Campylobacter jejuni, and of Escherichia coli in feces of feral pigs from Georgia. Fecal samples were collected from 87 feral pigs from forested and agricultural regions of Georgia. DNA was extracted from the fecal samples and quantitative PCR (qPCR) was used to screen for each of the four pathogens. The qPCR assays indicated that B. suis and eaeA-containing strains of E. coli was present in about 22% a

Can Taenia solium latent post-oncospheral stages be found in muscle tissue of cysticercosis-infected pigs (Sus scrofa)?

The existence of latent Taenia solium post-oncospheral stages in the tissues of infected pigs has been postulated. To assess whether such structures exist and can be detected, we examined muscle samples from cysticercosis-infected and uninfected pigs. Pork samples were homogenized, centrifuged, and resuspended in saline solution. Round microscopic structures of approximately 10 microm with variable refringence were found in the pellets of all samples from both infected and uninfected pigs. These became homogeneously red after staining with Sudan IV and disappeared after ether extraction. The o

Global prevalence, subtypes distribution, zoonotic potential, and associated risk factors of Blastocystis sp. in domestic pigs (Sus domesticus) and wild boars (Sus scrofa): A systematic review and meta-analysis.

The intestinal parasite Blastocystis sp. is a widely distributed protist among humans and various animal hosts, with significant prevalence in developing countries. Due to the zoonotic nature of its subtypes (STs), we aimed at global estimation of the prevalence, STs distribution, zoonotic potential, and associated risk factors of Blastocystis sp. infection in domestic pigs (Sus domesticus) and wild pigs/wild boars (Sus scrofa). The study was designed and conducted in 2021 via searching articles in PubMed, Scopus, Google Scholar, and Web of Science databases, based on the PRISMA checklist, and

"Silent circulation of Trichinella spp. in wild boars (Sus scrofa): Evidence from serology in the absence of detectable larvae".

Trichinella spp. are globally distributed foodborne zoonotic parasites maintained in complex sylvatic cycles, with wild boars (Sus scrofa) serving as key reservoir hosts. Regions located at ecological crossroads, where wildlife movement and species interactions are intensified, may facilitate silent parasite circulation that remains undetected by conventional surveillance. Türkiye, situated at the interface between Europe and Asia, and particularly the Central Black Sea Region-characterised by major river systems, wetland deltas, and migratory bird flyways-represents such a high-connectivity e

Risk for public health of multiresistant Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) in wild boar (Sus scrofa) in Tunisia.

BACKGROUND: Wild boar (Sus scrofa) is increasingly implicated as a reservoir of various pathogens, such as Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC) that are transmissible to other wildlife, domestic animals and humans. This represents risks to both human and animal health by causing food-borne infections. This investigation set out to evaluate the antibiotic resistance profiles and virulence factor rates of STEC strains isolated from wild boars. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 110 fecal samples were taken from postmortem carcasses of wild boar that were collected during the hunting campaign. PCR

The Incidence of Volatile Anesthesia Porcine Stress Syndrome in Pigs (Sus scrofa domesticus) Gives Implications for Physiology during Anesthesia.

Pigs are extensively used for biomedical research as animal models given their similarities to humans including size, arterial capacity, and cutaneous structure. While their size also allows for the use of clinically available anesthesia equipment (for example, endotracheal tubes and ventilators), anecdotes exist with respect to stress reactions after exposure to volatile anesthetics. Over 3 mo at our institution, 11 pigs (Sus scrofa domesticus) exposed to isoflurane anesthesia during 2 research protocols were euthanized after exhibiting clinical signs of malignant hyperthermia, including hype

PCV-2 vaccination modifies the cytokine serum profile in wild boar (Sus scrofa) coinfected with tuberculosis and PCV-2.

Animal tuberculosis (TB) and porcine circovirus 2 (PCV-2) coinfections have been associated to the development of severe patterns of tuberculous lesions. These coinfections are frequently observed in wild boar, considered the main wild reservoir of TB in Spain. The vaccination of wild boar with a single dose of PCV-2 vaccine has been associated with less severity of lesions. However, the underlying immune mechanisms affecting these animals remain scarcely known. The aim of this study was to determine whether PCV-2 vaccination alters cytokine concentrations in the serum of wild boars naturally
