Characterizing sweating problems in multiple sclerosis: insights from QSART, SUDOSCAN, and COMPASS-31: Sweating Problems in Multiple Sclerosis.

OBJECTIVE: To characterize sweating issues in people with multiple sclerosis (pwMS) using the Quantitative Sudomotor Axon Reflex Test (QSART) and SUDOSCAN. METHODS: In 75 pwMS, sweating symptoms were evaluated using the Composite Autonomic Symptom Score (COMPASS-31). Sweating function was assessed with QSART and SUDOSCAN. RESULTS: Symptomatic sweating problems were observed in 22 (29.3 %) pwMS. Pathological results of the QSART (sudomotor index (SI) >0) were identified in 13 (17.3 %) pwMS, while SUDOSCAN results showed pathology in 8 (10.7 %) pwMS. We found a positive correlation between the

Patterned Gold Nanoparticle Superlattice Film for Wearable Sweat Sensors.

Nanoparticle superlattices are beneficial in terms of providing strong and uniform signals in analysis owing to their closely packed uniform structures. However, nanoparticle superlattices are prone to cracking during physical activities because of stress concentrations, which hinders their detection performance and limits their analytical applications. In this work, template printing methods were used in this study to prepare a patterned gold nanoparticle (AuNP) superlattice film. By adjustment of the size of the AuNP superlattice domain below the critical size of fracture, the mechanical sta

Molecular and Physiological Functions of PACAP in Sweat Secretion.

Sweat plays a critical role in human body, including thermoregulation and the maintenance of the skin environment and health. Hyperhidrosis and anhidrosis are caused by abnormalities in sweat secretion, resulting in severe skin conditions (pruritus and erythema). Bioactive peptide and pituitary adenylate cyclase-activating polypeptide (PACAP) was isolated and identified to activate adenylate cyclase in pituitary cells. Recently, it was reported that PACAP increases sweat secretion via PAC1R in mice and promotes the translocation of AQP5 to the cell membrane through increasing intracellular [Ca

Establishment and characterization of immortalized sweat gland myoepithelial cells.

Sweat glands play an important role in thermoregulation via sweating, and protect human vitals. The reduction in sweating may increase the incidence of hyperthermia. Myoepithelial cells in sweat glands exhibit stemness characteristics and play a major role in sweat gland homeostasis and sweating processes. Previously, we successfully passaged primary myoepithelial cells in spheroid culture systems; however, they could not be maintained for long under in vitro conditions. No myoepithelial cell line has been established to date. In this study, we transduced two immortalizing genes into primary m

Elimination of spurious absent sweat response in QSWEAT recordings.

INTRODUCTION: Forearm QSWEAT recordings are occasionally absent in females, likely due to high skin resistance. METHODS: We identified consecutive subjects with no sudomotor abnormalities but absent/markedly reduced QSWEAT forearm volume, and repeated QSWEAT at the same site after gentle abrasion. RESULTS: QSWEAT volumes were absent for 4 subjects and markedly reduced for the other 4 (median 0.01, IQR 0-0.03). After gentle skin abrasion, repeat volumes were significantly higher for all subjects and became normal in 7 of 8 subjects. DISCUSSION: Skin abrasion restores QSWEAT volumes in previo

Atypical Presentation of Sweat Dermatitis with Review of Literature.

Sweat dermatitis is a peculiar kind of irritant inflammatory dermatoses occurring due to prolonged exposure of retained sweat over the skin. It is commonly seen in hot and dry climates like tropics during summer months due to thermal stress. Typically, parchment paper or cellophane paper like scaling is seen over occluded areas of back, shoulder, and other areas. Here we have reported a varied presentation of sweat dermatitis in the form of its coexistence with miliaria rubra (impending to thermal burn). Further we have also observed co existing pityriasis versicolor and sweat dermatitis where

Polymorphous Sweat Gland Carcinoma: An Immunohistochemical and Molecular Study.

Polymorphous sweat gland carcinoma is an uncommon low-grade malignant adnexal tumor with a marked predilection for the distal extremities. Histologically, the lesions are characterized by a cellular proliferation showing a combination of growth patterns, including trabecular, solid, tubular, cribriform, or adenoid cystic and pseudopapillary. The immunohistochemical and molecular profile of these tumors has not yet been properly addressed. We have studied 3 cases of polymorphous sweat gland carcinoma using a broad panel of immunohistochemical markers including cytokeratin AE1/AE3, CK5/6, MOC31,

Clear-Cell (Reticulated) Transformation of Eyelid Eccrine Sweat Glands.

A 24-year-old man with a painful, recurrent left upper eyelid nodule underwent an excision. Histopathologic evaluation disclosed a granulomatous process, most likely in response to a ruptured epidermoid cyst. In the vicinity of the nodule were multiple eccrine sweat glands displaying a curious clear-cell appearance in the adlumenal cells, the first example of such a phenomenon in the eyelids. Alcian blue, periodic acid Schiff, and documented staining failed to disclose, respectively, any cytoplasmic mucosubstances, glycogen accumulation, or lipid in the adlumenal secretory cells. Cytokeratin 7

Endocrine Mucin-Producing Sweat Gland Carcinoma: An Uncommon Presentation.

Endocrine mucin-producing sweat gland carcinoma (EMPSGC) is a rare, often underrecognized, low-grade sweat gland carcinoma of the skin of the eyelid. To date, only 20 cases of this carcinoma have been reported, most frequently in Caucasian females with an average age of 70 years. Although the diagnosis is primarily made with immunohistochemical stain, compared to endocrine ductal carcinoma in situ, clinical detection serves as a potentially curative treatment. Further, its benign appearance clinically makes this tumor often misdiagnosed and undertreated. This disease commonly presents in Cauca

Endocrine mucin-producing sweat gland carcinoma of the eyelid.

An elderly woman was incidentally noted to have a nodular mass on the upper eyelid, whilst under investigation for cataracts. Punch biopsy of this presumed basal cell carcinoma revealed it to be endocrine mucin-producing sweat gland carcinoma (EMPSGC). The tumour extended to the deep dermal layer and comprised solid nests with foci of cystic and papillary change, and additional cytoplasmic and focal extracellular mucin deposits. Immunohistochemistry confirmed epithelial lineage and neuroendocrine differentiation, and adjacent tissue invasion. The tumour was excised completely with Mohs microgr

Endocrine mucin-producing sweat gland carcinoma of the eyelid.

A 70-year-old woman was examined for a 4-mm bluish nodule in the left upper eyelid. The lesion was excised and pathology showed it to be endocrine mucin-producing sweat gland carcinoma with positive margins. She underwent Mohs surgery and reconstruction of the resulting defect. Clinicians should be aware of this entity given its association with invasive mucinous adenocarcinoma, a locally aggressive tumor with metastatic potential.

Multiple congenital epitrichial sweat gland hamartomas in a piglet.

A case of multiple congenital epitrichial sweat gland hamartomas in a 2-day-old piglet is presented. The skin lesions were raised, ovoid to linear in configuration, alopecic, red-purple to pink, and cauliflower-like to cerebriform in appearance. Histological examination of skin specimens confirmed a diagnosis of epitrichial sweat gland hamartoma. Complete necropsy examination revealed no other lesions.
