Assessment of baseline symptom burden in treatment-naïve patients with lung cancer: an observational study.

BACKGROUND: Patients with newly diagnosed lung cancer who have not yet begun treatment may already be experiencing major symptoms produced by their disease. Understanding the symptomatic effects of cancer treatment requires knowledge of pretreatment symptoms (both severity and interference with daily activities). We assessed pretreatment symptom severity, interference, and quality of life (QOL) in treatment-naïve patients with lung cancer and report factors that correlated with symptom severity. METHODS: This was a retrospective analysis of data collected at initial intake. Symptoms/interfere

Symptom burden and consulting behavior in patients with overlapping functional disorders in the US population.

BACKGROUND: Regulatory and treatment guidelines focus on individual conditions, yet clinicians often see patients with overlapping conditions. OBJECTIVE: This cross-sectional survey study assesses the impact of overlapping functional dyspepsia (FD), gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), irritable bowel syndrome with constipation (IBS-C), and chronic idiopathic constipation (CIC) on symptom burden and consulting behavior. METHODS: Survey participants met Rome III criteria for FD, IBS-C, and/or CIC, and/or reported GERD; participants answered questions about symptom frequency and bothersomen

Reducing symptom burden in patients with myeloproliferative neoplasms in the era of Janus kinase inhibitors.

Philadelphia chromosome-negative myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs) are clonal stem cell-derived malignancies that include primary myelofibrosis, polycythemia vera and essential thrombocythemia and are characterized by dysregulated Janus kinase-signal transducers and activators of transcription (JAK-STAT) signaling. Clinical manifestations include splenomegaly, cytopenias and/or systemic inflammation. Patients have a heterogeneous symptom profile that includes fatigue, loss of appetite, pruritus and night sweats, which significantly impact quality of life (QoL) and lead to poor survival outco

Distinguishing features of cancer patients who smoke: pain, symptom burden, and risk for opioid misuse.

UNLABELLED: Although many cancer patients who have pain are smokers, the extent of their symptom burden and risk for opioid misuse are not well understood. In this study we analyzed records of patients being treated for cancer pain, 94 of whom were smokers and 392 of whom were nonsmokers, to determine smoking status group differences. Smokers had significantly higher pain intensity, fatigue, depression, and anxiety than nonsmokers (independent samples t-tests P < .002). Smokers were at higher risk for opioid misuse based on the short form of the Screener and Opioid Assessment for Patients with

Vestibular symptom burden in hyperemesis gravidarum: A scale-based comparison with migraine and motion sickness.

PurposeMotion sickness (MS), visually induced motion sickness (VIMS), hyperemesis gravidarum (HG), and migraine share a spectrum of symptoms, including nausea, vomiting, dizziness, and heightened motion sensitivity. These commonalities suggest a potential shared neurophysiological basis involving vestibular and central nervous system mechanisms. This study aimed to evaluate the association between HG severity, MS susceptibility, VIMS susceptibility, and migraine-related symptom burden from a specialized vestibular perspective.MethodsThis cross-sectional study included 1010 women with a history

Kappa opioid receptor availability correlates with depressive symptom burden in chronic migraine: a preliminary investigation.

BACKGROUND: Chronic pain is frequently accompanied by affective disturbances, yet the neurobiological mechanisms linking pain perception and affective vulnerability remain poorly understood. The kappa opioid receptor (KOR)/dynorphin system has emerged as a key modulator of nociceptive and affective processes, in part through regulation of dopamine signaling within mesocorticolimbic circuits. However, the role of KOR signaling to pain-related affect and functional integration in migraine has not been characterized. METHODS: We measured KOR availability using positron emission tomography (PET)

Food Insecurity and Gastrointestinal Symptom Burden in Adults with Celiac Disease: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Background/Objectives: Food insecurity (FI) is associated with adverse physical and mental health outcomes and poses unique challenges for individuals with celiac disease (CD), who must adhere to a lifelong, strict gluten-free diet (GFD) as their sole treatment. Gluten-free foods are often more expensive and less accessible, potentially exacerbating dietary burden and symptom severity. This study aimed to examine associations between food insecurity and gastrointestinal symptoms, dietary burden, disordered eating symptoms, and mental health outcomes in adults with CD. Methods: Participants wer

Improving Survival Prediction of Head and Neck Cancer Patients by Modeling Long-term Symptom Burden.

Accurate survival prediction in head and neck cancer (HNC) is essential for effective treatment planning and management. Patient-reported outcomes (PROs) provide a complementary source of prognostic information by capturing longitudinal symptom trajectories that reflect patients' health status and treatment response, but their integration into survival modeling remains challenging due to missing data and limited availability at the desired decision points. We propose an end-to-end approach that models longitudinal symptom trajectories using a bidirectional long short-term memory (Bi-LSTM) netw

Tinnitus and Cognition in the Elderly: Unraveling the Impact of Symptom Burden on Cognitive Decline.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Tinnitus has been increasingly recognized not only as an auditory disturbance but also as a condition that is potentially linked to cognitive decline, particularly in older adults. However, the relationship between tinnitus characteristics and cognitive impairment remains underexplored in clinical settings. This study aimed to (1) evaluate the association between chronic tinnitus and cognitive function in adults aged 60 years and above using standardized tools, and (2) determine whether tinnitus severity and duration are associated with increased risk of cognitive impair

Symptom Burden and Quality of Life in Inpatient Palliative Care: Prospective Evaluation With IPOS-POL.

Effective palliative care requires a comprehensive assessment of symptoms to improve quality of life. This study evaluated the clinical utility of the Polish version of the Integrated Palliative Care Outcome Scale (IPOS-POL) in an inpatient setting. One hundred patients (68 oncological, 32 non-oncological) completed IPOS-POL at admission (T1) and after seven days (T2) between July 2022 and February 2023. While total IPOS scores remained stable (p = 0.3603), psychosocial distress increased significantly (p = 0.0217). Staff tended to underestimate drowsiness and psychosocial distress compared wi

Increased dialysis symptom index burden in maintenance hemodialysis patients during the COVID-19 lockdown period.

PURPOSE: The high prevalence of dialysis-related symptoms in maintenance hemodialysis (MHD) patients severely affects their quality of life. Therefore, in this study, we assessed the dialysis symptom index (DSI) of MHD patients during the second wave of COVID-19, which triggered a health crisis, resulting in many cities in China opting for social isolation. METHODS: A total of 106 MHD patients from our center were screened. DSI, sleep quality, and fatigue scales were investigated separately before and during lockdown. Demographic and laboratory data of MHD patients were collected. A nomogram

Effectiveness of exercise in reducing symptom burden among hemodialysis patients: a non-pharmacological intervention approach.

BACKGROUND: End-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients undergoing hemodialysis (HD) often experience a substantial symptom burden, which negatively impacts their quality of life. While pharmacological treatments are commonly used to manage these symptoms, non-pharmacological interventions, such as exercise, have gained attention for their potential to alleviate both physical and psychological symptoms without additional medication-related side effects. Compared to other strategies that often target a limited range of symptoms-such as meditation for depression or music therapy for anxiety-exercise

Symptom burden and its associations with clinical characteristics in patients with COPD: a clustering approach.

BACKGROUND: Symptom burden in patients with COPD is often under-recognised. In this cross-sectional analysis, we aimed to study the severity of a variety of (non-)respiratory symptoms in patients with and without COPD and to explore the associations between clusters based on symptom severity and other clinical characteristics. METHODS: Characteristics were assessed in 538 patients with COPD from primary, secondary and tertiary care and 116 non-COPD participants. The severity of 20 symptoms was measured using a visual analogue scale (VAS), ranging from 0 mm (no symptom) to 100 mm (maximum seve
