Knowledge of hepatitis among active drug injectors at a syringe exchange program.

Injecting drug users (IDUs) are at high risk for contracting and spreading viral hepatitis through nonsterile injection practices, unprotected sexual contact, and unsanitary living conditions. We sought to characterize hepatitis knowledge, prior testing, and vaccination history among IDUs at a New York City syringe exchange program (SEP). IDU subjects generally had a poor understanding of viral hepatitis transmission and prevention. We also found low vaccination rates: only 8% reported receiving hepatitis A vaccine and 11%, hepatitis B vaccine. Educating IDUs about risky behaviors and medical

Long-term effects of syringe exchange on risk behavior and HIV prevention.

The purpose of this study was to assess stability of population-level injection risk behavior over time among participants in a syringe exchange program and compare factors affecting syringe sharing at two points in time. Participants of the Tacoma Syringe Exchange Program were interviewed in 1997 and 2001 using audio computer assisted self-interviewing technology. In each wave of data collection, a random cross section of participants was recruited and interviewed, with no attempt made to follow respondents over time. Rates of injection risk behavior remained stable across the 4-year period,

Herpetic syringitis associated with eccrine squamous syringometaplasia in HIV-positive patients.

Herpetic syringitis has been described as a rare manifestation of herpes virus infection in patients with an immunodeficiency, usually secondary to human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. Eccrine squamous syringometaplasia (ESS) is an infrequent alteration of the eccrine duct epithelium reported in association with several conditions, including chronic ulcers, inflammatory processes, and patients receiving chemotherapy. The association of herpetic syringitis with ESS has not been reported before. We identified 3 cases of herpetic syringitis associated with ESS in patients with the acquir

A NEW TYPE OF SYRINGE, ESPECIALLY ADAPTED FOR INTRAVENOUS INJECTIONS OR THE ASPIRATION OF BLOOD.

In rabbits destroying transfused blood constantly during a period of many months a pronounced and widespread siderosis ensues, practically identical with that characterizing human hemochromatosis. The findings do not indicate the ultimate cause of this disease, but they throw light on its various features and its course, and suggest a means for its diagnosis.

Association of safer smoking supply distribution with participant encounters and naloxone distribution from syringe services programs: Findings from the National Survey of Syringe Services Programs in the United States.

BACKGROUND: In response to the recent and growing shift from injecting heroin to smoking fentanyl, an increasing number of syringe services programs (SSPs) in the United States are distributing safer smoking supplies. There is a lack of research on whether safer smoking supply distribution is associated with increased SSP engagement and naloxone distribution from SSPs. Therefore, we aimed to assess predictors of safer smoking supply distribution by SSPs and estimate associations between safer smoking supply distribution and scale of harm reduction services. METHODS: We used cross-sectional da

Nosocomial outbreak of Ralstonia mannitolilytica associated with prefilled saline flush syringes distributed in Europe, Germany, March to September 2026.

A nosocomial outbreak of Ralstonia mannitolilytica bloodstream infections in Germany from March to September 2026 included 16 cases (≤ 6 allelic differences using core genome multilocus sequence typing) across seven hospitals. Epidemiological investigations supported by a large language model, identified prefilled saline flush syringes of one manufacturer as common exposure across all cases. The manufacturer initiated a temporary quarantine and suspension of use of this product. Because it was distributed to other countries, cases may have occurred elsewhere, prompting this report.

Multistate Outbreak of Burkholderia cepacia Complex Bloodstream Infections After Exposure to Contaminated Saline Flush Syringes: United States, 2016-2017.

BACKGROUND: Burkholderia cepacia complex (Bcc) has caused healthcare-associated outbreaks, often in association with contaminated products. The identification of 4 Bcc bloodstream infections in patients residing at a single skilled nursing facility (SNF) within 1 week led to an epidemiological investigation to identify additional cases and the outbreak source. METHODS: A case was initially defined via a blood culture yielding Bcc in a SNF resident receiving intravenous therapy after 1 August 2016. Multistate notifications were issued to identify additional cases. Public health authorities per

Multiperson use of syringes among injection drug users in a needle exchange program: a gene-based molecular epidemiologic analysis.

Syringe-sharing behaviors among injection drug users (IDUs) are typically based on self-reports and subject to socially desirable responding. We used 3 short tandem repeat (STR) genetic biomarkers to detect sharing in 2,512 syringes exchanged by 315 IDUs in the Baltimore needle exchange program (NEP; 738 person-visits). Demographic characteristics as well as direct and indirect needle-sharing behaviors corresponding to the closest AIDS Link to Intravenous Experience (ALIVE) study visits were examined for association with multiperson use (MPU) of syringes. Overall, 56% of the syringes exchanged

Comparison of Endophthalmitis Rates Between Prefilled Syringes and Standard Vials in Aflibercept Intravitreal Injections: A Retrospective Study in Japan.

Background: Bacterial endophthalmitis is a rare but serious complication of intravitreal injections (IVIs). Prefilled syringes have been introduced to reduce contamination risk during drug preparation. However, whether they lower the incidence of bacterial endophthalmitis compared to vials remains unclear. Methods: This retrospective cohort study analyzed aflibercept IVIs performed at 17 clinical centers in Japan between 2015 and 2022. Patients aged ≥20 years who received aflibercept IVIs (vial or prefilled syringe) for age-related macular degeneration, diabetic macular edema, retinal vein occ

Tracking real-world persistence and adherence to anti-VEGF intravitreal therapy with prefilled syringes: a German prescription sales analysis.

OBJECTIVE: Intravitreal antivascular endothelial growth factor (anti-VEGF) therapy is the standard treatment for neovascular age-related macular degeneration and other retinal vascular diseases. Despite proven efficacy in clinical trials, real-world data suggest suboptimal persistence and adherence. This study aimed to assess therapy continuity in routine practice using pharmacy-based dispensing data in Germany, focusing on treatment with prefilled syringes (PFS). METHODS AND ANALYSIS: This retrospective cohort study used anonymised nationwide pharmacy sales data from Germany to evaluate pati

Investigating drug trends among people who inject drugs: Temporal, geographical and operational analyses of used syringes in Sydney, Australia.

BACKGROUND: Understanding drug use among people who inject drugs (PWID) is frequently based on self-reported data. Whilst insightful, it can be subjective and provides limited information on the drug composition. The chemical analysis of the residual drug content in used syringes has been shown to complement self-reported information. Chemical analysis can confirm the main drug injected and detect other components, such as adulterants. Drug use is dynamic; hence temporal, geographical and operational analyses might provide greater insight into market behaviours and the consumption trends of PW

Self-assembling T7 phage syringes with modular genomes for targeted delivery of penicillin against β-lactam-resistant Escherichia coli.

Bacteriophages are promising alternative antimicrobial agents due to their high specificity for host bacteria and minimal immunogenicity in humans. However, their therapeutic application is limited by their nature as biological entities, with potential evolutionary consequences. In this study, we address these challenges by repurposing only the structural components of bacteriophages as vesicles to deliver antibiotics directly into the cytoplasm of bacterial hosts. This approach is based on two key hypotheses: first, antibiotics such as β-lactams remain effective against resistant bacteria if

Clinical Outcomes and Experiences with Prefilled Syringes Versus Vials for Intravitreal Administration of Anti-VEGF Treatments: A Systematic Review.

INTRODUCTION: Anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) agents have been the standard treatment for retinal diseases for almost two decades. These treatments are administered via intravitreal injection using single-use vials or prefilled syringes (PFS). In this systematic review, we evaluate health care resource use and clinical outcomes and experiences with PFS for intravitreal injection of anti-VEGF treatments. METHODS: MEDLINE, EMBASE, and The Cochrane Library were searched from January 1, 2015 to February 8, 2024 to identify literature reporting outcomes regarding procedural efficien

The Masquelet Technique: Can Disposable Polypropylene Syringes be an Alternative to Standard PMMA Spacers? A Rat Bone Defect Model.

BACKGROUND: Usually, the two-stage Masquelet induced-membrane technique for extremity reconstruction begins with a polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) cement spacer-driven membrane, followed by an autologous cancellous bone graft implanted into the membrane cavity to promote healing of large bone defects. In exceptional cases, spacers made of polypropylene disposable syringes were successfully used instead of the usual PMMA spacers because of a PMMA cement shortage caused by a lack of resources. However, this approach lacks clinical evidence and requires experimental validation before being recommen
