The effect of task type and perceived demands on postural movements during standing work.

This study investigated how task demands affect postural behaviour during standing. Twenty-four participants completed three different 12-min tasks: (1) a cognitive task that involved answering questions based on a written passage; (2) a light manual assembly task; and (3) standing quietly with no secondary task. The manual task was associated with the lowest amount of postural movement and a more static pose than the other two conditions. Specifically, postural variability of the lumbar (F = 5.8; p = 0.01) and thoracic (F = 4.2; p = 0.03) spine, and fidgets and shifts of the spine (F = 3.2; p

Psychometric properties of dual-task balance and walking assessments for individuals with neurological conditions: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: The ability of performing a balance or walking task in conjunction with a secondary cognitive or motor task, referred to as dual-task (DT) ability, is essential in daily living. While there is some evidence that DT performance is impaired in individuals with neurological conditions, using reliable and valid tools to measure DT performance is essential. This systematic review aimed to evaluate the psychometric properties of DT balance and walking assessments in individuals with different neurological conditions. METHODS: A systematic literature search was conducted using PubMed, CI

Frequency, Not Amplitude, of Latency Affects Subjective Sickness in a Head-Mounted Display.

BACKGROUND: Interactions between frequency and amplitude of latency in head-mounted displays (HMDs) are thought to affect simulator sickness. Many studies have linked system latency to subjective sickness, but recent research has found that at least with the case of inertia-based head tracking technology, latency is not a constant; rather it varies systematically over time due to sensor errors and clock asynchronization. The purpose of this experiment was to further explore the relationship between frequency and amplitude of latency as they relate to subjective sickness experienced in an HMD.

Selecting and tracking multiple objects.

When interacting with the world, people can dynamically split attention across multiple objects in the environment, both when the objects are stationary and when the objects are moving. This type of visual processing is commonly studied in lab settings using either static selection tasks or moving tracking tasks. We describe performance limits that are common to both tasks, including limits on capacity, crowding, visual hemifield arrangement, and speed. Because these shared limits on performance suggest common underlying mechanisms, we examine a set of models that might account for limits acro

Individual differences in gambling proneness among rats and common marmosets: an automated choice task.

Interest is rising for animal modeling of pathological gambling. Using the operant probabilistic-delivery task (PDT), gambling proneness can be evaluated in laboratory animals. Drawing a comparison with rats, this study evaluated the common marmoset (Callithrix jacchus) using a PDT. By nose- or hand-poking, subjects learnt to prefer a large (LLL, 5-6 pellets) over a small (SS, 1-2 pellets) reward and, subsequently, the probability of occurrence of large-reward delivery was decreased progressively to very low levels (from 100% to 17% and 14%). As probability decreased, subjects showed a great v

Movement and skill analysis of supercross bicycle motocross.

The purpose of this study was to develop a greater understanding of Supercross bicycle motocross (BMX) via notational analysis. Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) categorized Elite riders (n = 26) were the subjects of the analysis; this event occurred during the UCI BMX World Championships. Video footage was captured and analyzed using Quicktime™ and VideoMotion© software. The movement patterns and time spent pedaling, jumping, and "pumping" were determined for each run. On average, the Elite Men took 39.62 ± 0.78 seconds to complete a track, using 30.45 ± 3.2 pedal strokes and spent 11.83 ±

Visually guided reaching depends on motion area MT+.

Visual information is crucial for goal-directed reaching. A number of studies have recently shown that motion in particular is an important source of information for the visuomotor system. For example, when reaching a stationary object, movement of the background can influence the trajectory of the hand, even when the background motion is irrelevant to the object and task. This manual following response may be a compensatory response to changes in body position, but the underlying mechanism remains unclear. Here we tested whether visual motion area MT+ is necessary to generate the manual follo

Computer simulation for prediction of performance and thermodynamic parameters of high energy materials.

A new code viz., Linear Output Thermodynamic User-friendly Software for Energetic Systems (LOTUSES) developed during this work predicts the theoretical performance parameters such as density, detonation factor, velocity of detonation, detonation pressure and thermodynamic properties such as heat of detonation, heat of explosion, volume of explosion gaseous products. The same code also assists in the prediction of possible explosive decomposition products after explosion and power index. The developed code has been validated by calculating the parameters of standard explosives such as TNT, PETN

Characteristics of triple and quadruple toe-loops performed during the Salt Lake City 2002 Winter Olympics.

The purpose of this study was to compare triple (T) and quadruple (Q) toe-loop figure skating jumps and quantify basic characteristics of these jumps to provide information to coaches that will assist them in teaching quadruple toe-loops to elite figure skaters. High-speed video was taken during men's practice and competition sessions at the 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Olympics; three-dimensional analyses of selected triple and quadruple jumps were completed. The most significant difference between triple and quadruple toe-loops was an increase in rotational velocity in the air. Additionally, i

Lapses of concentration and dyslexic performance on the Ternus task.

Recently, Cestnick and Coltheart (Cognition 71 (1999) 231) have reported evidence of abnormal performance on the Ternus apparent motion task in dyslexics. We demonstrate that some aspects of their data may be accounted for by more frequent lapses of concentration in the dyslexic group than in controls. We then report on a study in which a modification of the Ternus procedure was employed to simplify the task and to control for the effects of inattention. The results suggest that dyslexics do genuinely differ from normal readers in their perceptual processing.

Episodic memory in transient global amnesia: encoding, storage, or retrieval deficit?

OBJECTIVES: To assess episodic memory (especially anterograde amnesia) during the acute phase of transient global amnesia to differentiate an encoding, a storage, or a retrieval deficit. METHODS: In three patients, whose amnestic episode fulfilled all current criteria for transient global amnesia, a neuropsychological protocol was administered which included a word learning task derived from the Grober and Buschke's procedure. RESULTS: In one patient, the results suggested an encoding deficit, and in two others, a storage deficit. CONCLUSIONS: The encoding/storage impairment concerning ante

Changes of presaccadic cortical activity when performing horizontal, visually guided saccades.

When a visually guided saccade task is running, the presaccadic potential obtained in the initial period of the task differs from those obtained later, while the subject's oculomotor performance remains unaffected. These time-related changes of cortical activity consist both of an overall decreasing electrical activity as well as a selective one over certain cortical areas. The generalised reduced activity already described in earlier studies is considered as an unspecified effect such as fatigue or decreased motivation. On the contrary, the pronounced selective changes of cortical activity ob

Sleepiness and performance in narcolepsy.

Previous attempts to investigate the relationship between sleepiness and performance for subjects with narcolepsy have been limited by both the ability of narcoleptic subjects to contain their sleepiness for brief testing periods and the potential lack of sensitivity of routine performance tasks to sleepiness induced changes. The present study developed a research protocol which allowed subjects with narcolepsy to express states of sleepiness and non sleepiness and to then compare the performance of subjects with narcolepsy to age, gender and IQ matched controls on tasks evaluating automatic,

Evaluation of daytime sleepiness.

In summary, the evaluation of the tired patient requires an awareness of the various meanings of tiredness. Furthermore, it is important to differentiate normal sleepiness that is a product of circadian rhythm variation in vigilance from pathologic sleepiness. Sleepiness that results from faulty habits, e.g., altered sleep scheduling, drugs, or sleep restriction, can be readily discerned with the aid of a sleep-wake diary. Because subjective sleepiness is often unappreciated, especially in patients with sleep apnea, methods that rely on self-ratings of the severity of sleepiness, e.g., visual

A reading level match study of nonword reading skills in poor readers with varying IQ.

This study evaluated the hypothesis that poor readers are characterized by poor nonword reading skills, but that a specific deficit, as opposed to a developmental lag, in nonword reading will be found only in subjects whose reading is discrepant from intellectual ability. To test this hypothesis, we measured nonword reading skills in 93 (64 male, 29 female) third-grade poor readers and 54 (37 male, 17 female) fifth-grade poor readers (with and without reading/IQ discrepancies) who were matched to 147 (81 male, 66 female) nondisabled first graders on word identification skills. Results showed t

Analysis of athletic performance with prophylactic ankle devices.

We evaluated the effect of different ankle support devices on athletic performance. Thirty varsity college athletes were tested with both ankles supported by taping, Swede-O brace, Kallassy brace or left unsupported. The athletes performed four events: broad jump, vertical leap, 10 yard shuttle run, and 40 yard sprint. The events and appliances were randomized to prevent bias by fatigue. Compared to the results when no support was used, ankle taping resulted in a significant decreased performance in the vertical jump (4%), shuttle run (1.6%), and sprint (3.5%) (P less than 0.05). Use of the Sw

The effects of neuromuscular fatigue on task performance during repetitive goal-directed movements.

Proper movement timing is essential to the successful execution of many motor tasks and may be adversely affected by muscle fatigue. This study quantified how muscle fatigue affected task performance during a repetitive upper extremity task. A total of 14 healthy young adults pushed a low load back and forth along a low-friction horizontal track in time with a metronome until volitional exhaustion. Kinematic, force, and electromyography (EMG) data were measured continuously throughout the task. The first and last 3.5 min were analyzed to represent "early" and "late" fatigue. Means and standard

External timing constraints facilitate performance of everyday interceptive actions in children with Spastic Hemiparetic Cerebral Palsy.

We examined how children with Spastic Hemiparetic Cerebral Palsy (SHCP) perform interceptive actions they experience in daily life. Children were required to walk towards and intercept a stationary ball or a moving ball, with either their impaired or non-impaired arm. In the stationary ball condition the child was free to determine the speed of their response (internal timing), whereas in the moving ball condition there was a restricted time available (external timing). It was found that the reach movements of the non-impaired arm were different to the impaired arm, and were characterized by s
