Lactobacillus paraplantarum THG-G10 as a potential anti-acne agent with anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory activities.

Cutibacterium acnes (formerly Propionibacterium acnes) is the main bacterium targeted for the prevention and medical treatment of acne vulgaris. Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) are a group of microorganisms classified by their ability to produce lactic acid through fermentation. Although the activities of LAB have been studied, their potential anti-acne effects are not well known. Here, Lactobacillus paraplantarum THG-G10, which has anti-bacterial activity against C. acnes, was isolated from traditional Kimchi in Republic of Korea. The anti-acne effects of dried cell-free supernatant of L. paraplan

Cosmeceuticals in acne vulgaris: from mechanism of action to clinical application.

The use of cosmeceuticals in acne vulgaris is becoming increasingly prevalent with many over-the-counter formulations becoming part of patients' routine skincare. Cosmeceuticals are often used successfully as an adjunctive therapy to reduce the side effects of traditional prescriptions and improve compliance. This is a review to support the use of cosmeceuticals in acne, including retinol, retinaldehyde, benzoyl peroxide (BPO), azelaic acid, beta hydroxy acids, alpha hydroxy acids, niacinamide, zinc, tea tree oil and green tea. There is most evidence, in human clinical trials, to support the u

A Review of The Efficacy of Complementary and Alternative Medicines in Managing Dermatologic Infectious Diseases.

Dermatologic infections, particularly fungal and viral, are globally prevalent and often lead patients to seek complementary and alternative medicines (CAMs). This review critically evaluates 17 studies investigating CAM efficacy in treating dermatologic infectious diseases, focusing on those evaluated in randomized controlled trials (RCTs). Tea tree oil shows modest benefit for fungal infections such as tinea pedis and onychomycosis, though studies are limited by poor blinding and dropout rates. For herpes simplex virus (HSV), propolis and Melissa officinalis demonstrate potential antiviral e

Microemulsions of Essential Oils: Characterization and Phase Behavior.

Essential oils are a key ingredient in foods, beverages, and personal- and home-care products due to their flavors, scents, and various biological activities. This study investigates the capacity of polysorbate 60 (PS60) micelles to solubilize eight essential oils classified into two groups based on their composition. The first group (tea tree, rose, lavender, and melissa oils) contains more than 40% polar aliphatic or alicyclic alcohols or aldehydes, whereas the oils from the second group (chamomile, yarrow, lemon, and orange oils) contain less than 20% of these compounds. The efficient solub

In-vitro and in-vivo anti-Trichophyton activity of essential oils by vapour contact.

The minimum inhibitory doses (MIDs) of essential oils by vapour contact to inhibit the growth of Trichophyton mentagrophytes and Trichophyton rubrum on agar medium were determined using airtight boxes. Among seven essential oils examined, cinnamon bark oil showed the least MID, followed by lemongrass, thyme and perilla oils. Lavender and tea tree oils showed moderate MID, and citron oil showed the highest MID, being 320 times higher than that of cinnamon bark oil. The MID values were less than the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values determined by agar dilution assay. Furthermore, the

Formulation, Optimization, and Comprehensive Characterization of Topical Essential Oil-Loaded Anti-Acne Microemulgels.

Cutibacterium acnes is linked to the prevalent inflammatory skin disorder known as Acne Vulgaris (AV). Some topical agents exhibit unfavorable side effects like dryness and skin inflammation, and antimicrobial resistance (AMR) poses an increasing risk to effective AV management. This study develops and characterizes stable topical essential oil (EO)-loaded microemulgels with in vitro validated antimicrobial activities against C. acnes ATCC 6919, providing a solid scientific basis for their effectiveness. These microemulgels, with their potential to serve as an alternative to AMR-prone syntheti

In vitro efficacy of five essential oils against Pediculus humanus capitis.

Treatment of head lice has relied mainly on the use of topical insecticides. Today, conventional topical pediculicides have suffered considerable loss of activity worldwide. There is increasing interest in the use of natural products such as essential oils for head louse control, and many of them are now incorporated into various over-the-counter products presented as pediculicides, often without proper evaluation. The aim of the present study was to assess the in vitro efficacy of five essential oils against adults of Pediculus humanus capitis using a contact filter paper toxicity bioassay. T

Bactericidal and anti-virulence effects of Melaleuca alternifolia essential oil against foodborne pathogens: in vitro and milk matrix assay.

The increasing demand for natural antimicrobials has driven interest in plant-derived compounds for food safety applications. This study evaluated the antimicrobial activity of tea tree essential oil (Melaleuca alternifolia, TTO) against Escherichia coli and Salmonella spp., combining in vitro and in situ assays. Minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) ranged from 3.12 to 6.25 µg ml-1, and the minimum bactericidal concentrations were identical to the MICs, in media broth. Time-kill assays showed significant reductions in viable cells at 1× MIC, with complete inactivation of S. Enteritidis and

Preparation and evaluation of a multimodal minoxidil microemulsion versus minoxidil alone in the treatment of androgenic alopecia of mixed etiology: a pilot study.

BACKGROUND: The variable success of topical minoxidil in the treatment of androgenic alopecia has led to the hypothesis that other pathways could mediate this form of hair loss, including infection and/or microinflammation of the hair follicles. In this study, we prepared a multimodal microemulsion comprising minoxidil (a dihydrotestosterone antagonist), diclofenac (a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory agent), and tea tree oil (an anti-infective agent). We investigated the stability and physicochemical properties of this formulation, and its therapeutic efficacy compared with a formulation contain

Preparation of TTO/UF resin microcapsule via in situ polymerisation and modelling of its slow release.

For slow release of tea tree oil (TTO), TTO were encapsulated by urea-formaldehyde (UF) resin via in situ polymerisation. The effects of curing time and drying condition on particle size, and TTO loading of the TTO/UF microcapsules were investigated. The results indicated that TTO/UF resin microcapsules with curing time of 80 min had narrow size distribution and good wall cover. Drying at ambient was better to maintain the TTO content than drying at oven. The loading of TTO with curing time of 80 min can be up to 45 wt.% of the mass-proportion to the prepared microcapsules, and more than 90 wt

In vitro antibacterial activity of antibiotics and plant essential oils against Escherichia coli MTCC443 supported through the molecular docking and pharmacokinetics study.

Most of the Escherichia coli turned into serious pathogens or developed antibiotic resistance, mainly due to their ability to show different phenotypic traits. In order to overcome the resistance to these antibiotics, the use of essential oils (EOs) is of great significance against highly pathogenic microorganisms. This study has been made to compare the in vitro antibacterial activity and further validated the same through the molecular docking study of 13 antibiotics such as ciprofloxacin, chloramphenicol, erythromycin, ampicillin, cefotaxime, rifampicin, kanamycin, vancomycin, streptomycin,

Laboratory evaluation of aromatic essential oils from thirteen plant species as candidate repellents against Leptotrombidium chiggers (Acari: Trombiculidae), the vector of scrub typhus.

Scrub typhus, a rickettsial disease transmitted by several species of Leptotrombidium chiggers (larvae), is endemic in many areas of Asia. The disease is best prevented by the use of personal protective measures, including repellents. In this study commercially produced aromatic, essential oils of 13 plant species and ethanol (control) were tested in the laboratory for repellency against host-seeking chiggers of Leptotrombidium imphalum Vercammen-Grandjean and Langston (Acari: Trombiculidae). A rapid, simple and economic in vitro test method was used by exposing the chigger for up to 5 min. Re
