Bone Density Development of the Temporal Bone Assessed by Computed Tomography.

HYPOTHESIS: The temporal bone shows regional differences in bone development. BACKGROUND: The spreading pattern of acute mastoiditis shows age-related differences. In infants, it spreads laterally and causes retroauricular swelling, whereas in older children, it tends to spread medially and causes intracranial complications. We hypothesized that bone maturation may influence the spreading pattern of acute mastoiditis. METHODS: Eighty participants with normal hearing, aged 3 months to 42 years, participated in this study. Computed tomography (CT) values (Hounsfield unit [HU]) in various regio

Patient-Assessed Outcomes following Temporal Bone Fractures.

The long-term impact of neurotological symptoms after a temporal bone fracture (TBF), including facial nerve palsy (FP), hearing loss, tinnitus, and dizziness on the quality of life of patients is often underevaluated. Thus, we retrospectively assessed 30 patients with TBF (26 men and 4 women) in our university tertiary referral center. They participated from injury onset to the final follow-up, over an 18-month period. Quality of life was estimated using validated questionnaires, such as the Facial Disability Index (FDI: physical and social), Hearing Handicap Inventory (HHI), Tinnitus Handica

Perigeniculate Giant Cell Tumor of Temporal Bone.

Giant cell tumors of bone (GCTBs) are benign osteolytic neoplasms that can be treated with either gross-total resection or subtotal resection with adjuvant radiotherapy. For the rare GCTB of the temporal bone, close proximity to critical structures can produce functional deficits and make gross-total resection difficult to achieve without significant morbidity. We present the case of a 28-year-old woman with progressive facial paresis, otalgia, neck pain, imbalance, and subjective hearing loss. She was found to have a facial nerve mass centered at the geniculate ganglion extending into the lab

Clinical-radiological Correlation in Temporal Bone Fractures.

INTRODUCTION: The diagnosis of temporal bone fractures (TBF) is based on radiological imaging. The most widely used classification divides fractures into longitudinal, transverse, and mixed. In recent years, other classifications have emerged to better predict clinical manifestations. OBJECTIVES: To review computed tomography (CT) images of TBF, define their radiological pattern, and study the concordance of the observed findings with those described in the radiological report. To analyse the association between fracture types and clinical findings. To study the impact of mastoid pneumatizati

Temporal bone dysplasia in Coffin-Siris syndrome.

We report a child, diagnosed with Coffin-Siris syndrome (CSS), with chronic right otorrhoea. CT and DR-MRI were performed to further investigate, diagnose and determine relevant surgical anatomy. CT temporal bones assessment was performed, and the measurements compared with previously published data for normal temporal bone anatomy. These comparisons highlighted various differences which were not initially expected; it showed that there were multiple inner ear abnormalities in addition to middle ear disease. This case highlights the importance of considering temporal bone abnormalities in all

Temporal bone histopathology: Superior semicircular canal dehiscence.

OBJECTIVES: To present a histopathological case of a 91-year-old woman who was diagnosed with superior semicircular canal dehiscence postmortem. METHODS: The patient was a registered donor with the National Temporal Bone Donor Program at the NIDCD National Temporal Bone, Hearing and Balance Pathology Resource Registry. Computed tomography imaging was performed on each temporal bone. The temporal bones were decalcified with ethylenediaminetetracetate and embedded in celloidin, and tissue sections were stained with hematoxylin and eosin. Horizontal sections were taken through the left temporal

Temporal Bone Imaging Features in Osteogenesis Imperfecta.

We present the case of a 33-year old woman with osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) with progressive hearing loss and persisting vertigo. On CT-scan, symmetric extensive lucency in the pericochlear bony otic capsule and promontorium was demonstrated. The MRI-scan demonstrated symmetric areas of increased signal intensity on the T2-images with moderate contrast enhancement in the same regions. These findings correlate histologically by undermineralized thickened bone, the hallmark of OI. Hearing loss is an important clinical feature in patients with OI. The value of temporal bone imaging lies in addit

Temporal bone squamous cell carcinoma - Penang experience.

Temporal bone squamous cell carcinoma (TBSCC) is rare and poses difficulties in diagnosing, staging and management. We describe a case series with six patients who were diagnosed TBSCC, from January 2009 to June 2014, with median age of 62 years old. All patients presented with blood-stain discharge and external auditory canal mass, showing that these findings should highly alert the diagnosis of TBSCC. Three patients staged T3 and another three with T4 disease. High-resolution CT (HRCT) temporal findings were noted to be different from intraoperative findings and therefore we conclude that MR

[Temporal bone surgery. Surgical sequelae and complications].

The saying "no surgery, no surgical complications" is certainly true for all specialties. Three categories of undesired events may occur following surgery: surgical sequelae, failure to cure and complications. A critical self-analysis of surgical complications often reveals that these arise in vexing fashion according to Murphy's law, i.e. "what can go wrong, will go wrong". Incomplete preoperative evaluation, insufficient exposure of the surgical field, failure to identify surgical landmarks and misjudgment of the patient's preoperative complaints may culminate in an undesired surgical outcom

Primary temporal bone angiosarcoma: a case report.

We present a rare case of temporal bone angiosarcoma diagnosed in a 26-year-old female patient at 36 week of pregnancy. The patient was referred with a 2 months history of left otalgia and tinnitus with a tender swelling above the mastoid. Cranial imaging studies showed a 7 x 5 x 4 cm hypervascularized mass located in the left middle fossa with lysis of the temporal bone and extension to the subcutis. After the baby was delivered by caesarean section, the patient entered the oncology protocol. Selective embolization of the feeding vessels was followed by gross total surgical resection using a

Acute intracranial complications of temporal bone trauma.

Temporal bone trauma can be disastrous for the individual and his or her family. With the increase in violent crime throughout our society, the number of intracranial complications associated with temporal bone injury has increased significantly. Although multiple reports concerning the diagnosis and management of temporal bone trauma have been published, few studies on its intracranial complications have been addressed. In this study, we assessed the cases of 43 patients treated for temporal bone fractures between January 1992 and December 1994. The number of temporal bone fractures increased

Potter's syndrome: a temporal bone histopathological study.

Histopathological findings in seven temporal bones from four infants diagnosed as Potter's syndrome are described. The infants were labelled as Potter's syndrome after autopsy confirmed bilateral renal agenesis. Extrarenal manifestations included pulmonary hypoplasia and facial anomalies. The middle ear volume in infants with Potter's syndrome remained unchanged with age resulting in a significantly higher percentage of residual middle ear mesenchyme in these infants as compared to normal infants. Dehiscence of the facial nerve was seen in all the temporal bones studied. One ear showed the pre

Temporal bone pathology of adult-type osteopetrosis.

We present the pathologic features in the temporal bones of a 62-year-old woman with the adult benign form of osteopetrosis. Most of the bony tissue was expanded by dense lamellar bone, with, in some places, the presence of residual calcified cartilage. In the otic capsule, globuli interossei were greatly increased in number. The ossicles were enlarged with fixation of the stapes. Narrowing of mastoid air cells, the internal auditory meati, and eustachian tubes was present, the latter associated with chronic otitis media. The bone deposition in the ossicles contributed to the conductive hearin

Solitary (unicameral) cysts involving the temporal bone.

The primary unicameral cyst which involves the temporal bone is very rare. Only about 30 patients have been reported in the literature during the past ten decades. The lesion is most frequently encountered in the first and second decade of life. In contrast to the other locations in the skeleton, it usually remains asymptomatic for a long time until it causes a deformity or dysfunction. The etiology has so far remained obscure. Its occasional association with malformations of the ears and nasopharynx and other developmental anomalies, its incidental bilateral occurrence, and certain histologic
