Anatomy of the Anterior Deep Temporal Nerve: Implications for Neurotization in Blinking Restoration in Facial Paralysis.

Facial paralysis can lead to dysfunctions in eyelid closure, which is called lagophthalmos. A number of surgical procedures, both dynamic and static, have been described to restore the innervation of the orbicularis oculi muscle that closes the eyelids. This cadaver-based anatomical study aimed to evaluate the anatomy of the anterior, middle, and posterior deep temporal nerves; nerves to the temporalis muscle; and their availability for direct muscle neurotization of the orbicularis oculi. A total of 10 hemisectioned head specimens from 5 adult cadavers (2 men and 3 women) were used in this st

A case report and literature review of rare intracranial and extracranial dual-lesion diffuse large B-cell lymphoma with heterogeneous subtypes (GCB type + ABC type).

Diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) is the most common subtype of malignant lymphoma in adults. According to the gene expression profile, it can be classified into germinal center B-cell (GCB) type and activated B-cell (ABC) type. Cases with coexistence of the two subtypes and cross-site involvement are extremely rare. Herein, we report a 65-year-old female patient who presented with blurred vision in the right eye. Imaging examinations revealed space-occupying lesions in the left thalamus, basal ganglia, deep temporal lobe and left temporal muscle. Pathological biopsy and immunohistochemist

Does the cerebellum shape the spatiotemporal organization of muscle patterns? Insights from subjects with cerebellar ataxias.

The role of the cerebellum in motor control has been investigated extensively, but its contribution to the muscle pattern organization underlying goal-directed movements is still not fully understood. Muscle synergies may be used to characterize multimuscle pattern organization irrespective of time (spatial synergies), in time irrespective of the muscles (temporal synergies), and both across muscles and in time (spatiotemporal synergies). The decomposition of muscle patterns as combinations of different types of muscle synergies offers the possibility to identify specific changes due to neurol

On the facial artery of the raccoon dog (Nyctereutes procyonoides viverrinus Temminck).

Detailed observations were made of the facial artery in 20 raccoon dogs (Nyctereutes procyonoides viverrinus Temminck) utilizing the plastic injection method. The findings obtained were discussed in comparison with the facial artery of carnivorae. The facial artery diverged anterolaterally from the external carotid artery independently at a position between the origins of the lingual and the posterior auricular arteries when the external carotid bent laterally in front of the tympanic bulla. This artery, immediately after giving off the styloglossal branch, passed forwards superomedial to the

Reverse temporalis muscle flap: treatment of large anterior cranial base defect with direct intracranial-nasopharyngeal communication.

Inadequately managed frontal sinus fracture or sinusitis can pose a major problem of intracranial-nasopharyngeal communication. Life-threatening ascending infection of the intracranium is inevitable unless the intracranium is separated from the nasopharynx. In five patients with frontal bone defect associated with direct intracranial-nasopharyngeal communication, the authors used reverse temporalis muscle flap based on the superficial temporal vessels to obliterate the nasocranial communication. With the authors' method, the nasocranial communication were sealed off permanently, and the ascend

The effect of clear aligner treatment on masticatory muscles (masseter, temporalis) activity in adults: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: The use of clear aligners is becoming more common for aesthetic orthodontic treatment, but there are still concerns about how they affect mastication biomechanics in the short and long term. The clear aligners treatment (CAT) mechanism changes the position of the mandible and maxilla, especially impacting the masseter muscle. Surface electromyography (sEMG) proves to be a useful method to evaluate masticatory muscle activity (MMA). OBJECTIVES: To analyze the effect of clear aligners treatment on alterations in masticatory muscles (masseter, temporalis) using surface electromyograp

Primary Alveolar Echinococcosis Presenting with Simultaneous Cerebral and Craniofacial Involvement.

Alveolar echinococcosis (AE) is an important parasitic infestation caused by the larval stage of the Echinococcus multilocularis. Turkey is one of the countries occurred endemic of the disease. The disease primarily affects the liver. Cerebral and craniofacial involvements are very rare. Here the authors report a 46-year-old woman with simultaneous cerebral and craniofacial involvement of E. multilocularis. Although primary AE lesions with simultaneous cerebral and craniofacial involvement are exceedingly rare, radiologist must suspect from other unusual involvement such as craniofacial and mu

ELECTROPHYSIOLOGICAL CORRELATES OF MASTICATORY MUSCLES IN NASAL AND ORAL BREATHING MODES.

Type of breathing (nasal, oral, oronasal) can turn out to be a causative factor for (or result of) orthodontic anomalies alongside the respiratory-metabolic disorders. Consequently, assessment of functional characteristics of the masticatory apparatus, which differ in oral and nasal breathing modes, could be of interest for the evaluation of the degree of orthodontic dysfunction and formation of an effective individualized treatment plan. Aim of the study was to assess electrophysiologic characteristics of the masticatory muscles bilaterally in nasal and oral breathing modes. The study was con

Primary pericranial Ewing's sarcoma on the temporal bone: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Primary Ewing's sarcoma originating in the pericranium is an extremely rare disease entity. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 9-year-old female patient was admitted to our department due to a left temporal subcutaneous mass. The mass was localized under the left temporal muscle and attached to the surface of the temporal bone. Head computed tomography revealed a mass with bony spicule formation on the temporal bone, however, it did not show bone destruction or intracranial invasion. F-18 fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography showed no lesions other than the mass on the temporal bone.

The temporal branch of the facial nerve: how reliably can we predict its path?

A thorough examination of the temporal branch of the facial nerve was performed to characterize precisely the number of rami crossing the zygomatic arch and their location with respect to bone and soft-tissue landmarks. Fresh cadaver dissection was performed in 12 facial halves, dissecting the facial nerve superiorly from the stylomastoid foramen to identify all branches crossing the zygomatic arch. There were a median of three (range two to four) rami of the temporal branch crossing the lower aspect of the zygomatic arch, with distinct anterior and posterior divisions identified in each disse

Neck muscle activity in skydivers during parachute opening shock.

This observational study investigated skydiver neck muscle activity during parachute opening shock (POS), as epidemiological data recently suggested neck pain in skydivers to be related to POS. Twenty experienced skydivers performed two terminal velocity skydives each. Surface electromyography quantified muscle activity bilaterally from the anterior neck, the upper and lower posterior neck, and the upper shoulders; and two triaxial accelerometers sampled deceleration. Muscle activity was normalized as the percentage of reference maximum voluntary electrical activity (% MVE); and temporal muscl

Styloid, velar, and pharyngeal muscles in cleft palate. Anatomical findings in elderly cadaver with unrepaired cleft palate.

Dessection of the musculature of the palate, pharynx, and styloid process was carried out in a cadaver aged 78 years with an unrepaired complete cleft palate. A new muscle named "the accessory stylohyoid" was found to be attached to the styloid process and the lesser cornu of the hyoid bone bilaterally. Anatomical changes in other muscles especially the stylopharyngeus and palatopharyngeus are described. The functions of these muscles are discussed on the basis of the anatomical findings and previous observations of other investigators.

Temporal augmentation in bilateral habitual dislocation of the temporomandibular joint.

Temporal augmentation was achieved by introducing a 15 cm long fascialata strip into the tail of the temporal tendon intraorally, intertwining it throughout the length of the temporalis muscle and its fascia bilaterally. The strips were pulled taut after closing the mouth, and fixed firmly near the posteriosuperior origin of the muscle.

Extracranial blood flow, pain and tenderness in migraine. Clinical and experimental studies.

Migraine pain has traditionally been ascribed to dilatation of primarily extracranial arteries. Such dilatation has, however, not been demonstrated so far. Studies of microcirculation reveal no major hyperperfusion or ischemia in the temporal muscle or the subcutaneous tissue in the temporal region during attacks of migraine. However, a reduction in the orthostatic reactivity of the subcutaneous arterioles was observed on the side of the headache. Increased tenderness of the pericranial myofascial tissues is observed during migraine attacks, particularly on the side of the headache. Increased

Reappraisal of the anatomy of the frontotemporal branches of the facial nerve.

OBJECTIVE: The anatomy of the temporal branches of the facial nerve (FN) has been widely described in the neurosurgical literature because of its relevance in anterolateral approaches to the skull base and implication in frontalis palsies from these approaches. In this study, the authors attempted to describe the anatomy of the temporal branches of the FN and identify whether there are any FN branches that cross the interfascial space of the superficial and deep leaflets of the temporalis fascia. METHODS: The surgical anatomy of the temporal branches of the FN was studied bilaterally in 5 emb
