Exposures Associated with Non-Typhoidal Salmonella Infections Caused by Newport, Javiana, and Mississippi Serotypes in Tennessee, 2013-2015: A Case-Case Analysis.

Non-typhoidal Salmonella (NTS) infection (salmonellosis) is one of the most prevalent gastrointestinal diseases throughout the world. Human infections caused by Salmonella Newport, Javiana, and Mississippi serotypes have been observed to occur at higher rates on an annual basis in western Tennessee. The reason for the increased rate of NTS infection by these three serotypes in this region is not known. We conducted a case-case analysis to identify potential risk factors associated with the three Salmonella serotypes using FoodNet data, obtained from the Tennessee Department of Health, consisti

Exploring Co-production as an Implementation Strategy for Trauma-Informed Care in a Youth-Focused HIV Clinic in Memphis, Tennessee: Mixed Methods Research.

BACKGROUND: Memphis, Tennessee is second in the nation for HIV incidence, with one in three diagnoses among youth. Psychological trauma disproportionately impacts youth with HIV, compared with HIV-negative counterparts, requiring community-led and trauma-informed solutions to address mental wellness among youth with HIV. However, a dearth of research concentrates on trauma-informed care (TIC) for this population, with little exploration among youth-centered HIV care settings or into strategies for mobilizing communities to develop solutions. Research co-production, an approach in which researc

Investigating the Adult Ixodid Tick Populations and Their Associated Anaplasma, Ehrlichia, and Rickettsia Bacteria at a Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever Hotspot in Western Tennessee.

Ehrlichiosis and rickettsiosis are two common bacterial tick-borne diseases in the southeastern United States. Ehrlichiosis is caused by ehrlichiae transmitted by Amblyomma americanum and rickettsiosis is caused by rickettsiae transmitted by Amblyomma maculatum and Dermacentor variabilis. These ticks are common and have overlapping distributions in the region. The objective of this study was to identify Anaplasma, Ehrlichia, and Rickettsia species associated with questing ticks in a Rocky Mountain spotted fever (RMSF) hotspot, and identify habitats, time periods, and collection methods for col

HIV and Hepatitis C Among People Who Inject Drugs in Memphis, Tennessee: an Intersectional Risk Environment Analysis of the Social Determinants of Health.

BACKGROUND: The Southern US is confronting bourgeoning HIV and hepatitis C virus (HCV) epidemics among people who inject drugs (PWID), yet little is known about shared and unique risk factors across the region. We applied an intersectional risk environment framework to understand infectious disease outcomes for sub-groups of PWID that experience multiple axes of social marginalization related to racial and ethnic identity and social and economic vulnerability. METHODS: HIV and HCV prevalence was estimated from the first iteration of the CDC's National HIV Behavioral Surveillance respondent dr

Integrating epidemiologic modeling and explainable machine learning to predict and identify factors associated with self-reported depression among adults in Tennessee, United States.

BACKGROUND: Depression is a major public health concern, with Tennessee ranking among the U.S. states with the highest prevalence. Despite its burden, many cases remain undetected due to limited screening and access to mental health services. This study integrated epidemiologic modelling and explainable ML techniques to predict self-reported depression and identify key risk factors among Tennessee adults using the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) 2023 data. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional analysis of 5596 adults from the 2023 Tennessee BRFSS, representing 5,569,707 w

Keeping it real: A descriptive analysis of HIV testing history, PrEP awareness, and PrEP use among Black cisgender women in Middle Tennessee, 2018.

INTRODUCTION: HIV disproportionately affects Black/African American women in the United States, particularly in the southern states, including Tennessee. Despite this, limited research and intervention are targeting this population, especially regarding biomedical prevention technologies such as pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP). This study aims to describe the HIV testing history of a sample of Black women in middle Tennessee, assess their awareness and potential for adopting modern HIV prevention technologies like PrEP, and explore the dyadic and social factors that influence their HIV prevent

Prevalence of Multidrug-Resistant Bacteria from U.S.-Grown and Imported Fresh Produce Retailed in Chain Supermarkets and Ethnic Stores of Davidson County, Tennessee.

The aim of this study was to determine whether U.S.-grown and imported fresh produce retailed in ethnic stores and chain supermarkets was a reservoir of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. A total of 360 (129 imported and 231 U.S.-grown) samples of fresh produce were purchased from retail stores and analyzed for Enterobacteriaceae , including three pathogenic bacteria ( Escherichia coli O157:H7, Shigella , and Salmonella ), using standard methods. Presumptive pathogenic isolates were confirmed using PCR. The mean Enterobacteriaceae counts for imported produce were 6.87 ± 0.15 log CFU/g and 7.16 ± 0

Sex-Specific Diagnostic Inequality in Fabry Disease: Lessons Learned from Analysis of Newborn Screening and Cascade Testing in Tennessee from 2017 to 2024.

INTRODUCTION: Fabry disease (FD) is an X-linked lysosomal storage disease caused by alpha-galactosidase A (aGAL) deficiency. Newborn screening (NBS) programs for FD have been implemented in several US states; however, its effectiveness in identifying affected females remains uncertain. We hypothesized that sex-specific inequality of NBS-based detection of FD results in different diagnostic pathways for males and females with FD. METHODS: We compared diagnostic approaches for males and females with FD using Tennessee NBS results and Vanderbilt Lysosomal Storage Disorders Database (VLSDD). Sex-

Molecular epidemiology and pathogenomics of extended-spectrum beta-lactamase producing- Escherichia coli and - Klebsiella pneumoniae isolates from bulk tank milk in Tennessee, USA.

INTRODUCTION: The rise in extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL)-producing Enterobacteriaceae in dairy cattle farms poses a risk to human health as they can spread to humans through the food chain, including raw milk. This study was designed to determine the status, antimicrobial resistance, and pathogenic potential of ESBL-producing -E. coli and -Klebsiella spp. isolates from bulk tank milk (BTM). METHODS: Thirty-three BTM samples were collected from 17 dairy farms and screened for ESBL-E. coli and -Klebsiella spp. on CHROMagar ESBL plates. All isolates were confirmed by matrix-assisted las

Environmental impacts of the Tennessee Valley Authority Kingston coal ash spill. 2. Effect of coal ash on methylmercury in historically contaminated river sediments.

The Tennessee Valley Authority Kingston coal ash spill in December 2008 deposited approximately 4.1 million m(3) of fly ash and bottom ash into the Emory and Clinch River system (Harriman, Tennessee, U.S.A.). The objective of this study was to investigate the impact of the ash on surface water and sediment quality over an eighteen month period after the spill, with a specific focus on mercury and methylmercury in sediments. Our results indicated that surface water quality was not impaired with respect to total mercury concentrations. However, in the sediments of the Emory River near the coal a
