Utilizing attached hard ticks as pointers to the risk of infection by Babesia and Theileria species in sika deer (Cervus nippon yesoensis), in Japan.

Ticks are hematophagous ectoparasites that have a significant impact on their animal hosts. Along with mosquitoes, they are the main arthropod vectors of disease agents in domestic animals, wildlife and humans. To investigate the occurrence and prevalence of piroplasmids in ticks, DNA was extracted from 519 hard ticks collected from 116 hunted Hokkaido sika deer (Cervus nippon yesoensis). The success of the DNA extraction was confirmed by touchdown PCR targeting the mitochondrial 16S rDNA gene of ticks. Touchdown PCR and reverse line blot (RLB) hybridization targeting the 18S rRNA gene were us

Haemoparasitic agents associated with ovine babesiosis: A possible negative interaction between Babesia ovis and Theileria ovis.

Babesiosis, theileriosis, and anaplasmosis are the most common tick-borne diseases in sheep. The majority of anaplasmosis and theileriosis are subclinical; however, babesiosis causes severe infections in small ruminants. Although there are many reports of co-infections with the agents of these diseases, their clinical severity compared with either of the infections alone is unknown. Within the host, interactions between co-infecting species may cause variations in clinical presentation and response to therapy. The aim of this study was to determine the tick-borne agents in sheep located at sit

Genetic diversity and prevalence of piroplasm species in equids from Turkey.

Equine piroplasmosis (EP) is a protozoon disease caused by Babesia caballi and Theileria equi transmitted by ticks from the Ixodidae family. This study investigated the genetic heterogeneity and diversity of piroplasm genotypes using the Reverse Line Blotting (RLB) technique for piroplasm species in equids in Turkey. A total of 233 blood samples from 142 horses and 91 donkeys were collected in Şanlıurfa, Tunceli, and Iğdır. The RLB assay was performed for simultaneous detection of piroplasm species. The prevalence of piroplasm infection was 33.5% (95% CI; 27.4-39.9). T. equi was the most commo

Prevalence and risk factors associated with Theileria parva infection in cattle in three regions of Tanzania.

Ticks and tickborne diseases (TBDs) are serious constraints to cattle production in Tanzania and other tropical and subtropical countries. Among the TBDs, East Coast fever (ECF) is the most important as it causes significant economic losses to the cattle industry in Tanzania. However, control of ECF in Tanzania has continued to be a challenge due to inadequate epidemiological information. The main objective of this study was to determine the epidemiological situation of Theileria parva infections in cattle kept under pastoral and agro-pastoral farming systems in Mara, Singida, and Mbeya region

A PCR-RFLP Assay targeting RPS8 gene for the discrimination between bovine Babesia and Theileria species in China.

BACKGROUND: Bovine babesiosis and theileriosis is an important hemoprotozoal disease in cattles and yaks in tropical and subtropical regions leading to significant economic losses. In the field, the risk of co-infection between the bovine Babesia and Theileria species is very high. Thus, it is necessary to develop a simple, accurate, rapid and cost-effective method for large-scale epidemic investigation, in particular for the detection of co-infection in field. METHODS: In this study, DNA sequences of a ribosomal protein S8 (RPS8) gene from eight species of cattle piroplasms in China were use

Evaluation of in vitro inhibitory effect of enoxacin on Babesia and Theileria parasites.

Enoxacin is a broad-spectrum 6-fluoronaphthyridinone antibacterial agent (fluoroquinolones) structurally related to nalidixic acid used mainly in the treatment of urinary tract infections and gonorrhea. Also it has been shown recently that it may have cancer inhibiting effect. The primary antibabesial effect of Enoxacin is due to inhibition of DNA gyrase subunit A, and DNA topoisomerase. In the present study, enoxacin was tested as a potent inhibitor against the in vitro growth of bovine and equine Piroplasms. The in vitro growth of five Babesia species that were tested was significantly inhib

Collateral benefits of restricted insecticide application for control of African trypanosomiasis on Theileria parva in cattle: a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Tick and tsetse-borne diseases (TTBDs) constrain livestock production in tropical and subtropical regions of the world. Of this community of endemic diseases, East coast fever (T. parva) is the most important tick-borne disease (TBD) accounting for 70% of all losses due to TBDS in this region where control efforts target either tsetse or TBDs and seldom both. In those instances where simultaneous pyrethroid insecticide TTBD control is implemented, collateral benefits of tsetse control on TBD control have not been quantified. In the interest of guiding future TTBD control efforts, t

Subunit vaccines for the control of tick-borne diseases: implications for the future.

Tick-borne parasites are a major constraint to the improvement of livestock productivity in the developing world. These parasites include Theileria parva, T. annulata, Babesia bigemina, B. bovis, Anaplasma marginale and Cowdria ruminantium. The impact of these diseases is currently limited by the use of acaricides to decrease transmission by the tick vectors and immunization of the host animals using live vaccines. The use of acaricide is hampered by the development of acaricide resistance and live vaccines are dependent on cold chain facilities, which are generally unreliable in developing co

Isolation and characterization of bovine Theileria parasites in Zimbabwe.

Theilerial parasites of cattle were isolated by a variety of methods from the Harare area of Zimbabwe. Parasite stocks were established in lymphoid cell cultures and as cryopreserved sporozoite stabilates in the laboratory. Fourteen stocks in culture were characterized by testing them with monoclonal antibodies (MAb) raised against T. parva parva and T. parva lawrencei antigen. Two of these stocks had profiles similar to T. taurotragi isolates from East Africa, the other stocks had profiles similar to T. parva parva, however, many of them failed to bind MAb No. 7, and this may be a distinctive

Injectable trace minerals (Cu, Mn, Se, Zn) as immunometabolic modulators in the treatment of tropical theileriosis in neonatal calves.

Tropical theileriosis, a lymphoproliferative disease caused by Theileria annulata, remains a major threat to bovine health and productivity, particularly in tropical and subtropical regions. This study aimed to evaluate the comparative therapeutic efficacy of buparvaquone alone and in combination with long-acting oxytetracycline and injectable trace minerals (ITMs) in neonatal calves naturally infected with T. annulata. Forty-three infected crossbred calves aged 7–90 days were enrolled and randomly assigned to four treatment groups. Hematological and biochemical parameters were evaluated pre-
