OBJECTIVE: To determine the roles of tissue factor and thrombin on the systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) in posttrauma patients, as well as to investigate the relationship between SIRS and sepsis.
DESIGN: Prospective, cohort study.
SETTING: General intensive care unit of a tertiary care emergency department.
PATIENTS: Forty trauma patients were classified into subgroups, according to the duration of SIRS: non-SIRS patients (n = 9); patients with SIRS for < 2 days (n = 15); and patients with SIRS for > 3 days (n = 16).
INTERVENTIONS: None.

During the conversion of fibrinogen to fibrin, two amino-terminal fibrinopeptides A (FPAs) are cleaved by thrombin from each molecule. During early phases of conversion, fibrin intermediates lacking one of two FPAs (des A fibrin) are produced, the level of which depends on whether the FPA cleavage sequence from each molecule is random of concerted. To study the efficacy of topically administered thrombin as an adjuvant in tubal microsurgery, 24 rabbits underwent a 1-cm resection and microsurgical anastomosis of both fallopian tubes and were randomized to either thrombin or cautery for hemostasis. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of thrombin (TM) injection via the cerebellomedullary cistern on cerebral vessels in rats with subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH).
METHODS: Eighteen rats were randomly divided into three groups. In the A1 group, physiological saline was injected via the cerebellomedullary cistern; in the A2 group, 3 U of TM was injected into the subarachnoid space; and in the A3 group, SAH models were established and 3 U of TM was injected with the first injection of whole blood.
