Disorders of thyroid function are common, and screening, diagnosis, and management are often performed by primary care providers. While management of significant biochemical abnormalities is reasonably straight forward, laboratory tests only slightly outside, or even within, the normal range are becoming more difficult to appropriately manage. A large part of this increasing difficulty in appropriate management is caused by patients requesting, and even demanding, certain tests or treatments that may not be indicated. Symptoms of thyroid dysfunction are non-specific and extremely prevalent in

This article reviews currently available thyroid function tests and considers the utility of these tests in the investigation of suspected thyroid dysfunction. Potential thyroid screening tests as well as those secondary tests useful in establishing or excluding thyroid dysfunction are evaluated. Current controversies regarding free thyroid hormone and sensitive TSH assays are considered, and algorithms are provided for diagnosing both hypothyroidism and thyrotoxicosis.

Our objective was to examine the clinical practice of testing thyroid function in a mixed community and referral psychiatry inpatient unit. We evaluated (1) the frequency of ordering screening, (2) the type of test, and (3) the incidence of thyroid function abnormality among those tested. We reviewed thyroid function tests obtained on 277 consecutive first time adult admissions to the psychiatric wards at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, from 1992 through 1993, who met the DSM-III R diagnostic criteria for major depression or dysthymia. Of the 277 subjects, 260 (94%) had thyroid function tests

The frequency of thyroid antibodies was investigated in 1314 healthy blood donors. Twenty-three of 870 males (2.6%) were positive for thyroglobulin antibody (TA), 34 (3.9%) for thyroid microsomal antibody (MA) and 19 (2.2%) for both TA and MA. Thirty-four of 484 females (6.2%) were positive for TA, 46 (9.5%) for MA and 29 (6.0%) for both TA and MA. Eighty-six of 1314 blood donors were positive for TA and/or MA. There was no difference in liver function tests between AAT and controls. In females, the incidence of thyroid antibodies tended to increase with age. However, the subjects aged under 1

Close relationships exist between the liver and the thyroid. The liver is important in the transport, metabolism, storage and excretion of thyroid hormones as well as being an important site for hormone activity. Liver disease alters thyroid function and thyroid function tests at all levels of the hypothalamic-pituitary-peripheral axis. Since thyroid disorders occur more frequently than expected in certain kinds of liver disease, awareness of the limitations of thyroid function tests in this situation are necessary. Drugs active in controlling hyperthyroidism may themselves cause liver disease

OBJECTIVE: Although overt thyroid dysfunction is associated with some liver abnormalities, there is a dearth of information on liver function tests across thyroid function tests. We assessed the relationship between serum liver enzyme activity and thyroid function tests in a cohort of adult individuals.
DESIGN, PATIENTS AND MEASUREMENTS: We performed a retrospective analysis on the database of the Clinical Chemistry Laboratory at the Verona University Hospital to retrieve results of serum liver enzyme activities [alanine aminotransferase (ALT), gamma-glutamyltransferase (GGT)] and thyroid fun

BACKGROUND: A variety of HIV-related endocrine dysfunctions including adrenal, gonadal and thyroid disorders have been reported. We aimed to compare between the markers of thyroid function in newly diagnosed HIV-infected patients and healthy volunteers as a control group. The prevalence of the thyroid abnormalities in HIV-infected patients was assessed and the levels of thyroid autoantibodies were also determined.
METHODS: A total of 100 newly diagnosed HIV-infected patients having a CD4 cell count of 180-350 cells/mm(3) were enrolled in the study. Same number of healthy volunteers were also

UNLABELLED: Epilepsy is a common neurological disorder in childhood, and levetiracetam, a newer anti-seizure medication (ASM), is widely used due to its efficacy and safety. Recent attention has focused on the effects of anti-seizure medication (ASM) on thyroid function. This study aimed to evaluate changes in thyroid function and thyroid volume in children receiving levetiracetam monotherapy. It is the first study to assess both thyroid function tests and ultrasonographic thyroid volume in this context. In this single-center, prospective study, 40 children aged 3 months to 18 years with epile

INTRODUCTION: Studies demonstrated that abnormal thyroid functions may result in decreased or increased kidney size, kidney weight, and affect renal functions. In this regard, studies on the association of abnormal thyroid functions and renal function tests are scarcely found in Ethiopia.
OBJECTIVE: To assess renal function and electrolytes in patients with thyroid dysfunction, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
METHODS: Cross sectional study was conducted from March 21/2015-May 27/2015 at Arsho Advanced Medical Laboratory. During the study period, 71 patients with thyroid dysfunction were eligible,

BACKGROUND: Thyroid hormones modulate hepatic function through regulation of basal metabolic rate in addition; the liver metabolizes the thyroid hormones and regulates their endocrine effects.
OBJECTIVES: To assess thyroid functions in children with acute and chronic liver diseases.
METHODS: 85 studied children were divided into 4 groups; group 1 (20 children) with acute hepatitis (AH), group 2 (20 children) chronic liver disease1 (CLD1; relatively preserved liver functions including Child-Pugh stage A), group 3 (20 children) chronic liver disease2 (CLD2; includes Child-Pugh stage B or C), g

PURPOSE: The prevalence of thyroid dysfunction as measured by the presence of overt thyroid disease, abnormal results of thyroid function tests, or antithyroid antibodies was compared in patients with dermatitis herpetiformis (DH) and a normal control group who had the HLA-B8/-DR3 haplotype.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: The study population consisted of 56 patients with DH and 26 control subjects with the HLA-B8/-DR3 haplotype. All were examined for thyroid function abnormalities and thyroid autoantibodies.
RESULTS: Patients with DH had a statistically significant increase in the prevalence of abno

During a period of 2 months thyroid function tests, performed on out-patients referred to the laboratory from general practitioners, were studied. The relative informative value of the tests was estimated in relation to the reasons given for requesting the tests. In 86% of the samples from patients with no history of earlier thyroid disease the conventional thyroid tests were found within the reference intervals. 3% showed a definite abnormal pattern of values. In 11% the results were in some way abnormal. In the group of patients with earlier history of thyroid disease 50% of the tests were a

OBJECTIVES: This study seeks to determine the prevalence and pattern of thyroid dysfunction in a group of adult psychiatric inpatients with chronic schizophrenia. We also hypothesize that raised thyroid hormones are associated with more severe psychopathology.
METHODS: Thyroid function tests were performed on 189 patients and the Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale (BPRS) was administered by a single rater on all patients.
RESULTS: There was a high prevalence of (36.4%) thyroid function test abnormalities but all patients except 1 were assessed to be clinically euthyroid. Free thyroxine (fT4) and

The literature on COVID-19-related thyroid complications has accumulated over the past year or so as the pandemic has accelerated throughout the world. In particular, several recent case reports have been published describing a possible correlation between COVID-19 disease and subacute thyroiditis (SAT). In this review, we briefly present one of our own patients and review the current published literature in this area up to January 2021, including analyses of major series of thyroid function tests in patients with significant COVID-19 infection. We conclude that while the great majority of pat

Thyroid nodules are inexplicably frequent and affect approximately one-third of the adult population. The appropriate clinical management is focused primarily on excluding thyroid cancer and also on evaluating thyroid dysfunction and mechanical obstruction. There remains no evidence that a benign thyroid nodule, once diagnosed appropriately, will progress to a malignant lesion. The initial evaluation should include a complete clinical review, a thyroid sonogram by an experienced sonographer, a laboratory assessment of thyroid function, and, where indicated, a cytological assessment of the nodu

A 27-year-old woman with no previous personal or family history of thyroid disease was referred to us for the evaluation of thyroid nodule, five months postpartum. Thyroid scintigraphy demonstrated a left cold nodule. Fine needle aspiration cytology of the nodule showed a mixture of colloid, follicular cells and lymphocytes, suggesting lymphocytic thyroiditis. Thyroid function tests were normal and thyroid autoantibodies were negative. After two months the thyroid nodule was not palpated and thyroid scintigraphy returned to normal. Thyroid function tests remained normal twelve months after del

INTRODUCTION: Many hormone immunoassays use the biotin streptavidin interaction to immobilize immune complexes. The intake of high dose biotin can interfere with immunoassays using the biotin streptavidin interaction. The biotin-immunoassay interference generates falsely low or falsely high tests of hormones according to the type of immunoassay used.
CASE REPORT: A 70-year-old patient, with progressive multiple sclerosis, was referred to our hospital for thyrotoxicosis. She was found to have markedly elevated thyroid hormones level (T3-T4) and decreased thyrotropin (TSH) level but she had no

Various drugs may cause thyroid dysfunction. The drugs which may cause thyrotoxicosis include interferon, molecular-targeted agents, amiodarone, thyroid hormone itself and so on. Those which cause hypothyroidism include anti-thyroid drugs, lithium and iodine etc. which inhibit thyroid hormone synthesis and secretion, and dopamine etc. which block TSH secretion. Those drugs which alter the thyroid hormone metabolism or the binding to TBG or those inhibit thyroid hormone absorption may cause hypothyroidism or deteriorate it in patients with hypothyroidism treated with thyroid hormone or those wi
