Examining the gut microbiota from several human-biting tick species in Northwestern Spain.

Tick-borne diseases have increased significantly in Europe and Spain in recent years. One strategy explored for tick surveillance and control is the study of the microbiota. The focus is on understanding the relationships between pathogens and endosymbionts within the microbiota and how these relationships can alter these arthropods' vectorial capacity. Thus, it is pivotal to depict the bacterial communities composing the microbiota of ticks present in specific territories. This work aimed to describe the microbiota present in 29 adult individuals of 5 tick species collected from 4 provinces o

Imported African Tick Bite Fever in Japan: A Literature Review and Report of Three Cases.

African tick bite fever (ATBF) is an acute febrile illness caused by Rickettsia africae. ATBF is an important differential diagnosis of acute febrile illness among returned travelers. However, little information is available on ATBF cases imported to Japan, as only seven have been reported to date. To characterize the epidemiological and clinical profiles of patients diagnosed with ATBF in Japan, we reported three new ATBF cases at our hospital between May 2015 and April 2018 and conducted a literature review.

First Recognized Human Bite in the United States by the Asian Longhorned Tick, Haemaphysalis longicornis.

We present the case summary of the first human recognized to have been bitten by the Haemaphysalis longicornis tick in the United States, which occurred in New York State. Subsequent field studies confirmed that this tick was present in multiple geographic locations near the patient's residence, including on manicured lawns.

Transgenic functional complementation with a transmission -associated protein restores spirochete infectivity by tick bite.

The relapsing fever spirochete Borrelia hermsii and the Lyme disease spirochete Borrelia burgdorferi sensu stricto each produces an abundant, orthologous, outer membrane protein, Vtp and OspC, respectively, when transmitted by tick bite. Gene inactivation studies have shown that both proteins are essential for spirochete infectivity when transmitted by their respective tick vectors. Therefore, we transformed a vtp-minus mutant of B. hermsii with ospC from B. burgdorferi and examined the behavior of this transgenic spirochete in its soft tick vector Ornithodoros hermsi. IFA staining indicated u

Modelling tick bite risk by combining random forests and count data regression models.

The socio-economic and demographic changes that occurred over the past 50 years have dramatically expanded urban areas around the globe, thus bringing urban settlers in closer contact with nature. Ticks have trespassed the limits of forests and grasslands to start inhabiting green spaces within metropolitan areas. Hence, the transmission of pathogens causing tick-borne diseases is an important threat to public health. Using volunteered tick bite reports collected by two Dutch initiatives, here we present a method to model tick bite risk using human exposure and tick hazard predictors. Our meth

[Update on SENLAT syndrome: scalp eschar and neck lymph adenopathy after a tick bite].

SENLAT syndrome, also known as TIBOLA/DEBONEL, is an emerging disease in France. The major symptoms are necrotic eschar on the scalp associated with painful cervical lymphadenopathy. It occurs mainly in women and children during the cold seasons after a bite by a Dermacentor tick, responsible for transmitting Rickettsia slovaca or Rickettsia raoultii. Cutaneous swabs are safe, easy and reliable tools that should be used routinely by physicians to confirm diagnosis. In this particular disease, they should be preferred to serology, which is less sensitive. Doxycycline is the antibiotic of choice

Eschar and neck lymphadenopathy caused by Francisella tularensis after a tick bite: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: In 25 to 35% of cases, the aetiological agent of scalp eschar and neck lymphadenopathy after a tick bite remains undetermined. To date, Rickettsia slovaca, Rickettsia raoultii and more recently Bartonella henselae have been associated with this syndrome. CASE PRESENTATION: A four-year-old Caucasian boy was admitted to hospital with fever, vomiting and abdominal pain. On physical examination, an inflammatory and suppurating eschar was seen on the scalp, with multiple enlarged cervical lymph nodes on both sides. Although no tick was found in this scalp lesion, a diagnosis of tick-

Serologic evidence of Anaplasma phagocytophilum infections in patients with a history of tick bite in central Slovakia.

The aim of this study was to determine the risks of human anaplasmosis in an area of central Slovakia endemic for Lyme borreliosis. The circulation of Anaplasma phagocytophilum in ticks and wild animals has been observed in natural foci in this area for several years. Samples of human sera from patients with Lyme borreliosis and persons with a history of recent tick bite and clinical symptoms indicating Lyme borreliosis were collected in central Slovakia. A total of 76 human sera were analyzed using an indirect HGE IgG immunofluorescent assay kit. IgG antibodies against A. phagocytophilum were

Ticks need not bite their red grouse hosts to infect them with louping ill virus.

For pathogens transmitted by biting vectors, one of the fundamental assumptions is often that vector bites are the sole or main route of host infection. Here, we demonstrate experimentally a transmission route whereby hosts (red grouse, Lagopus lagopus scoticus) became infected with a member of the tick-borne encephalitis virus complex, louping ill virus, after eating the infected tick vector. Furthermore, we estimated from field observations that this mode of infection could account for 73-98% of all virus infections in wild red grouse in their first season. This has potential implications fo

Beyond the Bite: Tick Salivary Proteins Targeting Hemostasis and Inflammation; Implications for Cardiovascular Disease.

Ticks have evolved a diverse repertoire of salivary proteins that enable prolonged blood feeding by finely modulating host hemostatic, vascular, and immune responses, providing an unexpected source of candidates for cardiovascular and anti-inflammatory therapy. Tick saliva contains molecules that interfere with vasoconstriction, platelet activation, coagulation and fibrinolysis, while at the same time shaping leukocyte recruitment and cytokine release, placing these proteins at the crossroads of hemostasis, inflammation and cardiovascular disease. In this review, the main families of tick-deri

Probable African tick bite fever identified during preoperative evaluation in Central Utah.

African tick bite fever (ATBF) is a spotted fever group rickettsiosis caused by Rickettsia africae and is often identified among travelers returning from sub-Saharan Africa. Clinical presentation may be mild or nonspecific, often delaying diagnosis despite characteristic findings such as inoculation eschars. A 52-year-old male presented to the preoperative holding area prior to a scheduled left-sided inguinal hernia repair after recently returning from a game-hunting trip to Africa. During preoperative intake, he was noted to have a fever of 106 °F despite being otherwise asymptomatic. Physica

Inflammatory cytokine profile and T cell responses in African tick bite fever patients.

African tick bite fever, an acute febrile illness, is caused by the obligate intracellular bacterium Rickettsia africae. Immune responses to rickettsial infections have so far mainly been investigated in vitro with infected endothelial cells as the main target cells, and in mouse models. Patient studies are rare and little is known about the immunology of human infections. In this study, inflammatory mediators and T cell responses were examined in samples from 13 patients with polymerase chain reaction-confirmed R. africae infections at different time points of illness. The Th1-associated cyto

Bartonella spp. detection in ticks, Culicoides biting midges and wild cervids from Norway.

Bartonella spp. are fastidious, gram-negative, aerobic, facultative intracellular bacteria that infect humans, and domestic and wild animals. In Norway, Bartonella spp. have been detected in cervids, mainly within the distribution area of the arthropod vector deer ked (Lipoptena cervi). We used PCR to survey the prevalence of Bartonella spp. in blood samples from 141 cervids living outside the deer ked distribution area (moose [Alces alces, n = 65], red deer [Cervus elaphus, n = 41] and reindeer [Rangifer tarandus, n = 35]), in 44 pool samples of sheep tick (Ixodes ricinus, 27 pools collected
