Can a combination of different risk factors be correlated with leg fracture healing time?

BACKGROUND: A multicenter retrospective analysis of patients treated for leg fractures was conducted to develop a score that correlates with fracture healing time and to identify the risk gradient for delayed healing. METHODS: Fifty-three patients were analyzed and considered healed when full weight bearing was possible. Patients were divided into those who healed within 180 days and those who took longer to heal. Risk factors associated with delayed healing, fracture morphology, and orthopedic treatments were recorded. The available literature was used to weight the relative risk associated

Pleural fluid: Are temperature and storage time critical preanalytical error factors in biochemical analyses?

BACKGROUND: Biochemical analysis of fluid is the primary laboratory approach in pleural effusion diagnosis. Standardization of the steps between collection and laboratorial analyses are fundamental to maintain the quality of the results. We evaluated the influence of temperature and storage time on sample stability. METHODS: Pleural fluid from 30 patients was submitted to analyses of proteins, albumin, lactic dehydrogenase (LDH), cholesterol, triglycerides, and glucose. Aliquots were stored at 21 degrees , 4 degrees , and-20 degrees C, and concentrations were determined after 1, 2, 3, 4, 7, a

Factors associated with aortic stiffness and its change over time in peritoneal dialysis patients.

BACKGROUND: An increase in aortic stiffness, as reflected by an increase in pulse wave velocity (PWV), is an important predictor of cardiovascular mortality in dialysis patients. Decreased serum concentration of calcification inhibitor, such as fetuin-A, is inversely related to mortality in haemodialysis patients. Our aim is to investigate the factors associated with aortic stiffness and its change over time in peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients. METHODS: As a prospective observational study, we analysed 67 PD patients, aged 50 ± 14 years (mean ± SD) and with dialysis duration of 26 (5-58) mon

Tick-borne encephalitis in the Baltic States: identifying risk factors in space and time.

This paper presents preliminary results in our investigations of the biological (abiotic and biotic) and non-biological causes of the spatial heterogeneity and temporal change of tick-borne encephalitis (TBE), both within and between Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania. Spatial analysis revealed that the land cover and precise seasonal patterns of climatic indices (temperature and normalized difference vegetation index) can explain 55% of the observed spatial variation in TBE incidence over the period 1993-98 across all the Baltic States. Temporal analysis of climatic variables indicates a very spe

Factors Associated with Delayed On-Time Starts and Cancellations of Scheduled Non-Obstetric Surgeries.

OBJECTIVE: There is currently lacking research regarding patient and surgical factors contributing to in-hospital delays of gynecologic surgery, and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on such cases. The objective of this study was to determine if primary language was associated with delays or cancellations for patients presenting for scheduled non-obstetric surgery. The secondary objectives were to determine if this association changed after the COVID-19 pandemic, and identify other risk factors for delays or cancellations. METHODS: This was a retrospective cross-sectional study at a single

Risk Factors for Prolonged Operative Time in Hand-Sewn Laparoscopic IPAA for Ulcerative Colitis.

INTRODUCTION: Laparoscopic-assisted total proctocolectomy and ileal pouch-anal anastomosis (Lap-IPAA) is a standard surgical procedure for patients with ulcerative colitis (UC), but its operative time can be prolonged due to technical complexity and disease-specific factors. This study aimed to identify risk factors associated with prolonged operative time in hand-sewn Lap-IPAA. METHODS: This retrospective single-center study included 156 patients with UC who underwent hand-sewn Lap-IPAA between January 2018 and June 2024. Patients receiving stapled IPAA or open surgery were excluded. Clinica

Assessing Factors that Influence Psychiatric Referral Time and Postpartum Follow-Up in Obstetric Patients.

There is a clear shortage of psychiatric care in the population of peripartum obstetric patients in the United States(Kelly et al., 2001; Claridad, 2025). There is variability in both screening for mental illness and availability of psychiatric care which leads to a substantial gap in healthcare for such patients, particularly non-white patients. Additionally, during the postpartum period, the attendance rates to medical appointments are affected by race, ethnicity and socioeconomic status, further perpetuating the aforementioned healthcare disparity(Wilcox et al., 2016). The key purpose of th

Association between meteorological factors and varicella incidence in Japan: a nationwide time-series study.

Varicella, commonly referred to as chickenpox, is an airborne infectious disease that continues to pose an increasing threat to public health. Despite previous investigations, the global accumulation of epidemiological studies exploring the association between varicella epidemics and meteorological factors remains insufficient. This study aimed to quantify the short-term effect of meteorological factors, such as mean temperature and relative humidity, on the incidence of varicella across all 47 prefectures of Japan over a decade (2010-2019). Using a two-stage time-series modelling design, we f
