Temporal perception in velo-cardio-facial syndrome.

Temporal perception abilities refer to timing mechanisms used in daily life, such as the ability to reproduce and judge time, previously associated with the basal ganglia and the cerebellum, respectively. In individuals affected by velo-cardio-facial (VCFS), both the basal ganglia and the cerebellum have been shown to be particularly vulnerable to abnormal brain development, though related temporal perception abilities have yet to be investigated. In this study, our goal was to characterize time perception and reproduction abilities in individuals with VCFS. Compared to controls, we hypothesiz

Slow Temporal Dynamics of Motion-Induced Brightness Shift Reveals Impact of Adaptation.

Brightness of an object is determined by various factors including ambient illumination, surface reflectance of the object, and spatial and temporal relation between the object and its surrounding context. Recently, it has been demonstrated that the motion of an object alters its own and nearby object's appearance such as brightness and color. This study aims to unveil mechanisms of the motion-induced brightness shift by measuring its temporal dynamics. We found that the motion-induced brightness shift occurred instantaneously with the motion onset when the motion was introduced abruptly. Howe

The effects of telencephalic pallial lesions on spatial, temporal, and emotional learning in goldfish.

In mammals, the pallial amygdala is implicated in emotional learning and memory, whereas the hippocampus is involved in spatial, contextual, or relational memory. This review presents a set of experiments aimed to study the involvement of the dorsomedial and dorsolateral telencephalon of goldfish in spatial and active avoidance learning. Results showed that (1) medial lesions impaired both acquisition and retention of conditioned avoidance response in two-way active avoidance learning experiments with stimuli overlapping (emotional factor) and with an interstimuli gap (temporal and emotional f

Infants Anticipate the Timing of Sounds From Dynamic Collision Events.

In everyday perception, expected sounds are predicted by the movement of dynamic objects. Here, we asked if four-to five-month-old infants' understanding of physical events allows them to use motion to predict the timing of collision sounds. We investigated whether infant looking time differed when viewing collision events that resulted in amodal visual or multimodal audio-visual changes. In a moderated, online study, we showed two groups of infants a moving 2-D ball and collision events. In one group, we presented infants with alternating trials from two conditions that varied in the temporal

Motor commands induce time compression for tactile stimuli.

Saccades cause compression of visual space around the saccadic target, and also a compression of time, both phenomena thought to be related to the problem of maintaining saccadic stability (Morrone et al., 2005; Burr and Morrone, 2011). Interestingly, similar phenomena occur at the time of hand movements, when tactile stimuli are systematically mislocalized in the direction of the movement (Dassonville, 1995; Watanabe et al., 2009). In this study, we measured whether hand movements also cause an alteration of the perceived timing of tactile signals. Human participants compared the temporal sep

Perceptual compression of space through position integration.

The mechanism of positional localization has recently been debated due to interest in the flash-lag effect, which occurs when a briefly flashed stationary stimulus is perceived to lag behind a spatially aligned moving stimulus. Here we report positional localization observed at motion offsets as well as at onsets. In the 'flash-lead' effect, a moving object is perceived to be behind a spatially concurrent stationary flash before the two disappear. With 'reverse-repmo', subjects mis-localize the final position of a moving bar in the direction opposite to the trajectory of motion. Finally, we de

Visual search for object orientation can be modulated by canonical orientation.

The authors studied the influence of canonical orientation on visual search for object orientation. Displays consisted of pictures of animals whose axis of elongation was either vertical or tilted in their canonical orientation. Target orientation could be either congruent or incongruent with the object's canonical orientation. In Experiment 1, vertical canonical targets were detected faster when they were tilted (incongruent) than when they were vertical (congruent). This search asymmetry was reversed for tilted canonical targets. The effect of canonical orientation was partially preserved wh

Dyslexia and music. From timing deficits to musical intervention.

The underlying causes of the language and literacy difficulties experienced by dyslexic children are not yet fully understood, but current theories suggest that timing deficits may be a key factor. Dyslexic children have been found to exhibit timing difficulties in the domains of language, music, perception and cognition, as well as motor control. The author has previously suggested that group music lessons, based on singing and rhythm games, might provide a valuable multisensory support tool for dyslexic children by encouraging the development of important auditory and motor timing skills and

Functional imaging of the auditory system: the use of positron emission tomography.

Modern brain imaging methods now afford unprecedented opportunities for the in vivo study of central auditory system function. Positron emission tomography (PET) has been used as a functional imaging technique for more than 15 years to study the distribution of cerebral haemodynamic changes associated with auditory stimulation, in subjects with normal and abnormal auditory function. Many of these studies concern processes related to, but not identical with, audition, such as speech perception, melodic processing and directed attention. Additionally, PET has been used to explore auditory percep

Audiovisual estimation of Time-to-contact.

Time-to-contact (TTC) is the remaining time for a moving object to reach its observer. A good estimation of TTC is essential in everyday situations such as crossing a road or catching a ball. So far, most studies have only looked at estimation of TTC at constant speed, and in visual condition, whereas it is a multisensory task by essence. In our study, we investigated TTC estimation at constant or accelerated speed for three modalities: Auditory, Visual and Audiovisual. At constant speed, it has been demonstrated that TTC estimation performance is already accurate so the addition of auditory c

Abnormal multisensory temporal discrimination in Parkinson's disease.

Cognitive deficits are prevalent in Parkinson's disease (PD), ranging from mild deficits in perception and executive function to severe dementia. Multisensory integration (MSI), the ability to pool information from different sensory modalities to form a combined, coherent perception of the environment, is known to be impaired in PD. This study investigated the disruption of audiovisual MSI in PD patients by evaluating temporal discrimination ability between auditory and visual stimuli with different stimulus onset asynchronies (SOAs). The experiment was conducted with Fifteen PD patients and f

A Longitudinal Examination of HIV Risk Perception Accuracy among Sexual Minority Men with History of Childhood Sexual Abuse.

Men who have sex with men (MSM) with history of childhood sexual abuse (CSA) are at high risk for HIV acquisition. One reason is posttraumatic responses compromise ability to accurately appraise risk for danger/vulnerability. Health behavior change models and related interventions assume risk perception can be changed in an enduring manner. Given paucity of studies examining how risk perception changes or sustains over time post-intervention, this underlying assumption is not confirmed. Among this particularly high-risk group who struggle with perceiving risk due to trauma-related cognitions,

Perception of audio-visual synchrony is modulated by walking speed and step-cycle phase.

Investigating sensory processes in active human observers is critical for a holistic understanding of perception. Recent research shows that locomotion can rhythmically alter visual detection performance, illustrating how natural behaviours influence sensory processing. Here, we tested whether the speed and phase of locomotion also modulate temporal perception, focusing on the perceived synchrony of supra-threshold audio-visual stimuli. Participants made synchrony judgements over a range of stimulus onset asynchronies (SOAs) while walking at either slow or natural walking speeds. Slow walking

Effects of interaural intensity difference on the processing of interaural time difference in the owl's nucleus laminaris.

Interaural time and intensity differences (ITD and IID) are processed independently in the owl's auditory system. This paper examines whether this independence is established in nucleus laminaris (NL), the first site of ITD processing. A plot of discharge rate against time difference (ITD curve) is sinusoidal in NL. The ITDs that produce the peaks are called the most favorable ITDs, and those that produce the troughs are called the least favorable ITDs. IID had little effect on the discharge rates of laminaris neurons for the most and least favorable ITDs. The degree of peak-trough modulation

Beyond Auditory Sensory Processing Deficits: Lexical Tone Perception Deficits in Chinese Children With Developmental Dyslexia.

Increasing evidence suggests that children with developmental dyslexia exhibit a deficit not only at the segmental level of phonological processing but also, by extension, at the suprasegmental level. However, it remains unclear whether such a suprasegmental phonological processing deficit is due to a difficulty in processing acoustic cues of speech rhythm, such as rise time and intensity. This study set out to investigate to what extent suprasegmental phonological processing (i.e., Cantonese lexical tone perception) and rise time sensitivity could distinguish Chinese children with dyslexia fr

Neural Correlates of Audiovisual Temporal Binding Window in Individuals With Schizotypal and Autistic Traits: Evidence From Resting-State Functional Connectivity.

Temporal proximity is an important clue for multisensory integration. Previous evidence indicates that individuals with autism and schizophrenia are more likely to integrate multisensory inputs over a longer temporal binding window (TBW). However, whether such deficits in audiovisual temporal integration extend to subclinical populations with high schizotypal and autistic traits are unclear. Using audiovisual simultaneity judgment (SJ) tasks for nonspeech and speech stimuli, our results suggested that the width of the audiovisual TBW was not significantly correlated with self-reported schizoty

Aberrant time experience in schizotypy: A dimensional perspective.

Atypical experiences of time in schizophrenia have long been clinically and empirically documented. The nature of and ways in which time experience anomalies emerge in nonpsychotic schizotypic individuals, however, are largely unknown. The current study investigates associations between well-established schizotypy indicators and a self-report measure of time experience, the Subjective Time Questionnaire, with a specific focus on the perceived speed of passing time. We also examine the differential relations between the subscales of the Subjective Time Questionnaire and schizotypal symptom doma
