BACKGROUND: According to a population-based study, approximately 6.8% of children and adolescents in Germany suffer from acute or chronic constipation. It can be of organic or functional origin and may be associated with comorbid disturbances, particularly fecal incontinence.
METHODS: We selectively searched the PubMed and Google Scholar databases for articles with the keywords "constipation," "children and adolescents," and "incontinence". Recommendations are based on the AWMF guideline on constipation and fecal incontinence and on international guidelines and reviews.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the current treatment of functional nonretentive fecal incontinence, which consists of education, toilet training, and positive motivation.
STUDY DESIGN: Patients, age 6 years and older, referred for fecal incontinence (FI) and diagnosed with functional nonretentive fecal incontinence were eligible candidates. Seventy-one children (76% boys, median age 9.3 years) were randomized to receive conventional therapy (control group) or conventional therapy in addition to daily enemas during 2 weeks. Treatment success was defined as <2 episodes of FI/month without use of enemas.

Bowel incontinence is a major social impairment for 90% of patients with spina bifida. This study assess the bowel continence of children and young adults with spina bifida before and after a toileting intervention that emphasized patient/family education and a regular, consistently timed, reflex-triggered bowel evacuation.
