Longstanding dental pathology in Neandertals from El Sidrón (Asturias, Spain) with a probable familial basis.

Two Neandertal specimens from El Sidrón, northern Spain, show evidence of retained left mandibular deciduous canines. These individuals share the same mitochondrial (mtDNA) haplotype, indicating they are maternally related and suggesting a potential heritable basis for these dental anomalies. Radiographs and medical CT scans provide evidence of further, more extensive dental pathology in one of these specimens. An anomalous deciduous canine crown morphology that developed before birth subsequently suffered a fracture of the crown exposing the pulp sometime after eruption into functional occlus

A morphological study of root resorption of the maxillary first deciduous molars.

The aim of this study was to elucidate the relationship between root resorption of the maxillary first deciduous molars and the developmental state of the successive permanent teeth. Twenty-four specimens of the maxilla from 12 dry skulls were classified into four dental eruption stages based upon their deciduous and permanent dentition. Serial sections prepared from the maxilla and embedded in polyester resin were observed with soft X-ray films. The area from the lowest point of the protruded part of the zygomatic process to the alveolar crest of the maxillary first deciduous molar was divide

Rare case of gemination of mandibular third molar-A case report.

Fusion and germination are the anomalies that occur due to some developmental eccentricity during the time of morpho-differentiation of the tooth bud and have a close resemblance to each other. The gemination is an attempt of the division of a single tooth into two and, hence, appears as an enlarged single tooth while the tooth count is normal when the affected tooth is counted as one. Its exact pathogenesis is ambiguous. This anomaly has been observed mostly in deciduous dentition as compared to that in permanent dentition. Gemination is rarely associated with the third molar and, hence, the

Upper arch dimensional changes with clear aligners in the early mixed dentition : A prospective study.

BACKGROUND: One goal of orthodontic treatment in mixed dentition is to expand the maxillary arch to allow proper tooth alignment and a correction of sagittal and vertical malocclusions. However, for most treatment protocols, expected outcome is not really clear to allow for a standardization of phase I orthodontic treatments. This lack of information makes it difficult for clinicians to predict tooth movements, including transverse expansion efficacy with Invisalign® (Align Technology, Santa Clara, CA, USA) in children. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to evaluate the transverse max

Comparative proteomic analysis of dental cementum from deciduous and permanent teeth.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Dental cementum (DC) is a mineralized tissue covering tooth roots that plays a critical role in dental attachment. Differences in deciduous vs. permanent tooth DC have not been explored. We hypothesized that proteomic analysis of DC matrix would identify compositional differences in deciduous (DecDC) vs. permanent (PermDC) cementum that might reflect physiological or pathological differences, such as root resorption that is physiological in deciduous teeth but can be pathological in the permanent dentition. METHODS: Protein extracts from deciduous (n = 25) and perma

[Analysis of primary teeth crown dimensions and dental arch physiological data of individual normal occlusion children in 67 children of 3.5-4.5 years of age].

Objective: To digitally measure the three-dimensional (3D) size of primary tooth crowns and the dimensions of the dental arch in children with individual normal primary dentition, preliminarily obtaining baseline data on the 3D size of primary tooth crowns as well as the length and width of the dental arch, and their influence factors. This study aims to provide a data foundation for the design of reference models for primary dentition. Methods: From May to June 2021, 122 caries-free children aged 3.5-4.5 years with individual normal occlusion were selected from five kindergartens in Haidian D

An assessment of the reliability of pulp testing deciduous teeth.

The aim of this study was to assess the reliability of children's responses to pulp testing of deciduous teeth. The maxillary canine was chosen as the test tooth. One hundred children aged 7-10 years were selected who had at least one non-carious maxillary canine with an intact root showing only early radiographic signs of resorption. Using a minimization sampling technique, the children were allocated to one of two groups, for pulp testing with ethyl chloride (EC) or with an electric pulp tester (EPT). True and sham tests for both pulp testing methods were applied. The tests were repeated fol

Cementum-like tissue deposition on the resorbed pulp chamber wall of human deciduous teeth prior to shedding.

In the later stage of exfoliation in human deciduous teeth, odontoclastic resorption takes place at the pulpal surface of the coronal dentin. However, this resorption does not continue until the teeth are shed, and the resorbed pulp chamber wall is usually repaired by cementum-like tissue deposition. In this study, we examined the formation and characteristics of the cementum-like hard tissue on the resorbed dentin surface in the pulp chamber of deciduous teeth prior to shedding. The site and degree of deposition of newly formed cementum-like tissue on the resorbed pulp chamber wall varied fro

Radicular Cyst Presenting in a Female Child: A Case Report.

A radicular cyst, also known as a periapical cyst or root end cyst, is usually associated with permanent dentition and its association with deciduous teeth is an infrequent phenomenon. Radicular cyst typically arises from inflammation of the pulp and periapical tissues of a non-vital tooth. This article presents a case report of a six-year-old female with an apical periodontal cyst associated with deciduous and permanent teeth in the maxillary posterior region of the jaw. Early diagnosis of the lesion might have resulted in a conservative treatment plan. This text's purpose is to emphasize the

Studies of a family manifesting premature exfoliation of deciduous teeth.

We report observations made on a family in which the children manifested premature exfoliation of the deciduous incisors and canines beginning as early as 1.5 years of age. We observed gingival recession, alveolar bone resorption, tooth loosening and exfoliation without apical root resorption in the absence of clinical signs of inflammation. The children's mother, age 26, had a normal periodontium, but the father, age 30, had periodontitis of moderate severity. Exfoliated deciduous teeth from one of the children were examined histologically and features characteristic for hypophosphatasia were

Clinicial-pathologic correlations of non-trauma related Odontodysplasia in 28 dogs: 2013-2023.

Odontodysplasia is an uncommon dental developmental disorder associated with enamel, dentin, pulp abnormalities, and overall tooth morphology. The affected tooth is grossly abnormal in size and contour and is commonly associated with swelling of the affected area and failure of eruption. Histologically, the enamel and dentin are hypoplastic and hypomineralized. Odontodyplasia occurs most commonly in response to direct trauma to the developing tooth bud (enamel organ and dental follicle). Data on the prevalence and features of non-traumatic odontodysplasia are lacking. Medical records of dogs d

Development of rotation of mandibular premolar tooth germs in the dog.

The development of premolar tooth germs in dogs, particularly their rotation and crowding, was examined on radiographs, dissected specimens of tooth germs, serial sections stained by Masson-Goldner's technique and reconstructed models. The materials used were the mandibles of 32 puppies from birth to 6 months, and the species was a highly pedigreed Shiba Inu which has no crowding of the premolars in the mature stage. The results obtained are as follows. (1) Rotations and crowdings of premolars, similar to those in brachygnathus dogs and wolves raised in captivity, were observed during ontogene

Malunited fracture of the body and condyle of the mandible : A Case Report.

Mandibular fractures are the most common facial fractures seen in hospitalized children and their incidence increases with age. Treatment options include soft diet, intermaxillary fixation with eyelet wires, arch bars, circummandibular wiring, or stents. Alternative options include open reduction and internal fixation through either an intraoral or extraoral approach. Many factors complicate the management of pediatric mixed-dentition mandibular fractures: tooth eruption, short roots, developing tooth buds and growth issues. One major factor is the inherent instability of the occlusion in the

Teething.

Teething does not appear to cause diarrhea, fever, rashes, seizures or bronchitis. It may be associated with some daytime restlessness, thumb sucking, gum rubbing, drooling and temporary loss of appetite. It is not clear whether these signs are developmental in origin or are actually related to tooth eruption. Illness occurring with teething should be thoroughly evaluated so that a serious systemic disturbance is not overlooked.

Prevalence of congenital dental anomalies of the deciduous dentition in Japanese children.

We examined the prevalence of anomalies in deciduous dentition in 2,733 Japanese three-year-old children. The results showed that fused teeth occurs in 4.10%, congenital missing teeth in 2.38%, enamel hypoplasia in 1.50%, peg-shaped teeth in 0.55%, palatal cusps in upper deciduous incisors in 0.37%, supernumerary teeth in 0.07%, and color anomalies in 0.07%. Sixty-nine boys and 43 girls had fused teeth, percentages of 4.88 and 3.26, respectively. This difference was significant. All the fused teeth were located in the anterior region and were more frequent in the mandibular than in the maxilla

Canine transposition as an alternative to trauma of the maxillary incisors: case report.

OBJECTIVE: The present article aims at reporting the clinical case of a patient who suffered trauma at two years of age, causing almost complete apical displacement of the deciduous maxillary left central incisor and of the permanent incisor. METHODS: Ectopia secondary to intrusion was minimized by surgical removal of the ectopic tooth, and the left permanent canine was submitted to orthodontic traction to replace the extracted tooth. RESULTS: The treatment period lasted 36 months, resulting in correct occlusion and a good aesthetic outcome. CONCLUSIONS: Dental transposition carried out by
