Abfraction lesions: etiology, diagnosis, and treatment options.

Abfraction is a type of noncarious cervical lesion (NCCL) characterized by loss of tooth tissues with different clinical appearances. Evidence supports that abfraction lesions, as any NCCLs, have a multifactorial etiology. Particularly, the cervical wear of abfraction can occur as a result of normal and abnormal tooth function and may also be accompanied by pathological wear, such as abrasion and erosion. The interaction between chemical, biological, and behavioral factors is critical and helps to explain why some individuals exhibit more than one type of cervical wear mechanism than others. I

Oral examination results in rescued ferrets: clinical findings.

Ferrets have increased in popularity as pets, and a growing number are seen in companion animal practice. Domestic ferrets are commonly used as animal models for research of human oral conditions. The present study evaluated the prevalence of oral pathology in rescued ferrets which - to the authors' knowledge - has not yet been described in the scientific literature. Conscious oral examination was performed on 63 ferrets, of which 49 underwent general anesthesia for further examination. The most common clinical findings included malocclusion of mandibular second incisor teeth (95.2%); extrusio

Intraoral Scanning for Monitoring Dental Wear and Its Risk Factors: A Prospective Study.

Dental wear arises from mechanical (attrition or abrasion) and chemical (erosion) factors. Despite its prevalence and clinical significance, accurately measuring and understanding its causes remain challenging in everyday practice. This one-year study with 39 participants involved comprehensive examinations and full-arch intraoral scans at the start and after 12 months. Volume loss exceeding 100 µ on each tooth's surfaces (buccal, lingual/palatine and incisal/occlusal) was measured by comparing three-dimensional scans from both time points. This study also assessed factors such as abrasion and

Caries Etiology and Preventive Measures.

Caries is a widespread disease in both children and adults. Caries is caused by the conversion of fermentable carbohydrates by plaque bacteria into acids on the tooth surface. Thus, it is important to focus on sugar reduction and plaque control. For efficient plaque removal/control, state-of-the-art toothpastes contain various active ingredients such as antimicrobial agents (e.g., chlorhexidine, stannous salts, and zinc salts), abrasives (e.g., calcium carbonate, calcium phosphates, and hydrated silica), surfactants (e.g., sodium lauryl sulfate and sodium methyl cocoyl taurate), and natural co

Wear Behaviour of Multilayer Al-PVD-Coated Polymer Gears.

A comprehensive experimental investigation of the wear behaviour of coated spur polymer gears made of POM is performed in this study. Three different thicknesses of aluminium (Al) coatings were investigated and deposited by the Physical Vapour Deposition (PVD) process. The Al coating was deposited in three steps: By plasma activation, metallisation of the aluminium by the magnetron sputtering process, and plasma polymerisation. The wear of the gears was tested on an in-house developed testing rig for different torques (16, 20, and 24 Nm) and a rotational speed of 1000 rpm. The duration of the

A new analyzing method for quantification of abrasion on the Bruxcore device for sleep bruxism diagnosis.

AIMS: To evaluate a newly developed semi-automatic computer-based method to analyze the objectivity of the Bruxcore Bruxism-Monitoring Device (BBMD) by assessing the interrater reliability. The capability of the BBMD to differentiate between sleep bruxers (SB) and healthy controls was also verified by estimating the sensitivity, specificity, and predictive values. METHODS: Forty-eight SB and 21 controls took part in this investigation. After a detailed clinical dental examination, each participant received a BBMD to be worn for 5 consecutive nights. The BBMDs were then scanned and rated by 2

Anterior interferences: their impact on dental health function.

The purpose of this article was to introduce the concept of anterior interferences into the dental lexicon and into the thought process of restorative and orthodontic treatment. It certainly seems clear that this information should have a profound impact on the finishing inclinations of the maxillary and mandibular anterior segments. The evidence appears to contraindicate treatment mechanics that would permit anterior interferences during or following orthodontic treatment. Such clinical sequelae could be obviated by controlling the axial inclination of the maxillary and mandibular anterior se

Composite resin as a means of improving the appearance of periodontally involved teeth.

Composite resin has become established not only as a material for restoring carious teeth, but also as a means of veneering discoloured or misshapen teeth. This case report describes how composite resin was used to improve the appearance of a tooth which had become unsightly as the result of a combination of gingival recession and attrition. This was done by veneering both the root surface and the cervical area of the crown.

[Questions and answers to possible side effects of external bleaching therapies].

There are several questions with regard to the application and possible side effects of external bleaching therapies. The following short review gives answers to some questions regarding this topic. It might be concluded that every bleaching therapy should be preceded by a meticulous intraoral examination. To reduce the risk of adverse effects, it is mandatory to have knowledge about the mode of action of bleaching agents.

Orthodontic Replacement of Lost Permanent Molar with Neighbor Molar: A Six-Year Follow-Up.

Extraction is very frequent indication in orthodontic planning, especially when there are crowding, biprotrusion, and aesthetically unpleasant profiles. Next to extraction comes space closure, which represents a challenge for orthodontists because of extended treatment time, discomfort created for the patient, tissue tolerance, and stability concerns. When it comes to what mechanics to choose for space closure, loops present two major advantages in relation to sliding mechanics: absence of abrasion and possibility to reach pure dental translation. A case is presented where an adult female pati

Optimizing smile composition and esthetics with resin composites and other conservative esthetic procedures.

Numerous esthetic deficiencies may be present in natural, restored, or orthodontically enhanced smiles. The most frequent defects are transposed anterior teeth following aplasia, existing or remaining diastemas, form abnormalities and discolorations, abrasion, erosion, and dysplasia. Conservative treatment modalities such as enamel recontouring, bleaching, microabrasion, and resin composites have the potential to correct or improve esthetic problems. These treatments deserve more attention because they have tremendously improved in practicability, efficiency, and predictability. The search for

Management of dental staining: can low-abrasive dentifrices play a role?

Dental staining, while always a significant problem, has become more important in recent years with the introduction and increased use of chlorhexidine-based mouthrinses. Not only do these rinses themselves cause staining, they also enhance staining from other sources, such as diet or tobacco use. An understanding of the etiologies of dental stains will help today's practitioners become more effective in managing dental stains in their practices. Important strategies for managing stain are patient education about the causes of staining, careful consideration of product recommendations for home

Computed Tomographic Findings of Dental Disease and Secondary Diseases of the Head Area in Client-Owned Domestic Rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus): 90 Cases.

Domestic rabbits have teeth that grow throughout the animal's life and are prone to disease. Clinical signs of dental disease in domestic rabbits are non-specific, and, therefore, a definitive diagnosis usually requires additional methods. This study was carried out on a group of 105 domestic rabbits aged 3 to 9 years. In total, 90 domestic rabbits with dental disease visible on CT images and other secondary diseases of the head area qualified for this study. Malocclusion was found in 57 (63.3%). Retrograde elongation of the tooth apices in the mandible was present in 39 (43.3%), and it was pr

Improved Surface Layer Erosion of Pit and Fissure Caries Lesions in Preparation for Resin Infiltration.

The penetration of a low-viscosity resin (infiltrant) into caries lesions depends on the erosion of the relatively impermeable surface layer (SL) that covers the lesion body. The present study aimed to evaluate the effect of different abrasive pretreatments on erosion of the SL and on penetration of an infiltrant into occlusal caries lesions, simultaneously. Sixty extracted human molars showing International Caries Detection and Assessment System (ICDAS-2) lesions were randomly allocated to 5 groups. A small area of each lesion was covered with resin before etching. Twelve lesions each were et
