RETROSPECTIVE CLASSIFICATION AND MANAGEMENT OF CANINE FRACTURES IN LARGE APES WITHIN SPECIES SURVIVAL PLAN©-MANAGED POPULATIONS (2004-2017).

The prominent canine tooth of the large ape species western lowland gorilla (WLG; Gorilla gorilla gorilla), chimpanzee (CH; Pan troglodytes), bonobo (BO; Pan paniscus), and orangutan (ORG; Pongo pygmaeus spp.) is vulnerable to injury. Specialty consultation is often sought for severe dental fractures to optimize care. Although several options are possible (none, medical, endodontic, extraction), treatment by type of fracture for this tooth has not been well documented in apes. A retrospective review by survey was performed to assess the frequency of canine dental fracture in large apes that we

An in vitro study of the effect of different restorative materials on the reliability of a veneering porcelain.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Implant-supported, porcelain veneered restorations experience a greater rate of porcelain fracture than tooth-supported restorations. For completely edentulous patients, one approach to minimizing porcelain fracture is to use acrylic resin in the mandible, although its efficacy is unknown. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the reliability of a veneering porcelain fatigued with different restorative materials in vitro. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Fifty-nine veneering porcelain disk specimens were fabricated by layering veneering porcelain on nickel-chromium ba

Operative Techniques in Mandibular Fracture Repair: A Cross-specialty Comparison of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Otolaryngology, and Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.

BACKGROUND: Mandibular fractures are the most common facial fractures treated in the emergency setting, with significant variability in operative management across surgical specialties. Plastic and reconstructive surgery (PRS), otolaryngology (ENT), and oral and maxillofacial surgery (OMFS) each approach mandibular fracture repair with different philosophies, particularly regarding tooth extraction within the fracture line. However, few studies directly compare these practices. OBJECTIVE: This study assessed differences in operative techniques, specifically tooth extraction and fixation strat

The Silent Fracture: Incidental CBCT Detection of a Non-Traumatic Oblique Palatal Root Fracture in a Vital Maxillary Molar; A Case Report and a Mini Review.

Root fractures of maxillary molars, particularly those involving the palatal root, are rarely reported and often present diagnostic challenges due to their deep anatomical position and lack of overt clinical symptoms. Most cases are associated with trauma; however, nontraumatic etiologies, including chronic occlusal stress and dietary habits, may also contribute. A 57-year-old Iranian female with no history of trauma or systemic disease was referred for endodontic evaluation of the maxillary first molar due to extensive caries and a separated instrument fragment. Cone-beam computed tomography

Root Fracture as Complication of Surgically Assisted Rapid Maxillary Expansion.

A 23 year old male patient was submitted to surgical assisted rapid maxillary expansion (SARME). There were any postoperative complications until the finish of orthodontic expansion process. However, in the 30th postoperative day, patient mentioned pain in upper central incisor. Periapical radiography evidenced a root fracture of central upper right incisor. After endodontic treatment, the fractured apex was removed. After 3 years of follow-up, the patient finished orthodontics, and the damaged tooth was in good aspect. Apical fracture is an unexpected complication of SARME. However, follow-up

Reattachment of subgingivally fractured central incisor with an open apex.

A case report of a 6-year-old girl with a fractured maxillary left central incisor with an open apex is presented. The procedure used to repair the fracture included flap surgery with an intrasulcular incision and endodontic treatment. The patient was called for 3 months regular follow-up to check the root formation. At the end of 32 months just before the root was obturated by guttaperka, she fractured the same tooth. Flap surgery was repeated and the tooth was restored. The root canal was obturated with a root filling paste and guttaperka as the apex was closed. Examination 10 months after t

[Treatment of subgingival crown root fracture: forced eruption--case report].

The conventional treatment methods for a subgingival crown root fracture are (1) extract the residual root and restore with a fixed bridge; (2) crown restoration with a deep subgingival margin; and (3) exposure of the fracture line by a crown lengthening operation and restoration with a crown. However, these methods require reduction of either the tooth structure or the periodontal support. Improvements in endodontic and orthodontic therapy followed Heithersay in 1973 to combine the use of endodontic and orthodontic therapy to manage subgingival crown root fractures--the so-called forced erupt

Drill-related root injury caused by intraoperative intermaxillary fixation: an analysis of 1067 screw applications.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Intermaxillary fixation is a standard procedure for the treatment of mandibular fractures or in orthognathic surgery. Predrilling for screws poses the risk of accidental tooth root injury, potentially leading to further pathological processes. Limited evidence about accidental tooth injury during intermaxillary fixation is available due to heterogenous study designs. The aim of this study was to evaluate the risk of root trauma using predrilled transgingival fixation screws and the clinical consequences for the affected teeth. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this retrospective stud

Injury to Anatomic Structures Due to Fixation Device in Management of Mandibular Fracture.

INTRODUCTION: ORIF is the gold standard for the management of mandibular fractures. The chances of postoperative complications are due to infection, damage of the inferior alveolar nerve canal, or tooth root during the fixation of the fracture fragments. Fixation hardware placed in the vicinity of the vital structures may encroach on the anatomic structures, leading to postoperative complications. AIM: The aim of this study is to evaluate the injury to the anatomic structures in the proximity of the fracture line due to the fixation device. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This retrospective study was

The importance of bioceramics and computed tomography in the late clinical management of a horizontal root fracture: A case report.

Root fractures resulting from dental trauma involve dentin, cementum and pulp. The present study aimed to demonstrate the importance of cone-beam computed tomography (CBTC) and bioceramics in the correct planning and intervention of a horizontal root fracture case in tooth 11 with late treatment in an 18-year-old patient. Clinical and radiographic examinations revealed tooth displacement, pain on vertical percussion and images suggestive of a horizontal root fracture. Pulp necrosis was diagnosed and CBTC was requested for treatment planning. Subsequently, endodontic treatment was performed usi

Management of Teeth in the Line of Mandibular Angle Fractures Treated with Open Reduction and Internal Fixation: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Mandibular angle fractures are common and frequently involve a tooth in the fracture line. Despite trends toward more conservative indications for tooth extraction during open repair, the literature remains heterogeneous. This review aims to ascertain the effect of tooth extraction/retention on patient outcomes following mandible open reduction and internal fixation and to evaluate the evidence surrounding indications for extraction. METHODS: PubMed, EMBASE, the Cochrane Library, Elsevier text mining tool database, and clinicaltrials.gov were queried through March of 2018 for Engl

Current aspects of restoring traumatically fractured teeth.

Endodontic and restorative considerations are of primary significance in the treatment of tooth fractures. Since exposed dentinal tubules permit invasion of bacteria into the endodontic system, a protective dressing must be applied as part of the emergency treatment. Provided the dentin wound has been sealed, restorative treatment can also be carried out at a later stage. The fractured tooth fragment can be reattached using adhesive protocols in order to restore function and esthetic appearance. If reattachment is difficult or impossible, eg, in cases of multiple or missing fragments, current

Vital root resection with regenerative retrograde vital pulp therapy: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Vital root resection is a surgical procedure that involves the selective removal of a root of a multi-rooted tooth to preserve the remaining tooth structure and pulp, maintaining the vitality and function of the tooth. When combined with regenerative retrograde vital pulp therapy (rVPT), it may offer a less invasive and more cost-effective alternative to traditional root resection methods. The purpose of this article is to report the techniques and outcomes of vital root resection and rVPT for the periodontally involved fractured mesiobuccal (MB) root in a maxillary first molar. M

Timing and method of restoration affect fracture resistance of endodontically treated teeth: An in vitro study.

Root canal treatment (RCT) often results in significant loss of tooth structure, increasing the risk of tooth fracture under occlusal forces. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of different restoration timings on the fracture resistance of teeth after RCT and to compare the effectiveness of 3 restoration methods: full crown, onlay, and occlusal veneer. Sixty extracted human molars underwent standardized RCT and were randomly assigned to 9 groups (n = 6-7) in a 3 × 3 factorial design: immediate (1 week), early (2-3 weeks) or delayed (4-6 weeks) restoration, each receiving either a zirconia

Clinical management of injuries to the maxilla, mandible, and alveolus.

Facial bone and especially mandibular fractures are injuries in which first aid and management of late complications require dental professionals, and consequently all dentists should be familiar with the modern principles of their treatment. Tooth involvement is common in mandibular and maxillary fractures and can require more treatment than does the jaw fracture. Nonsurgical treatment of bone fractures involves immobilization, which for the facial bones is achieved with maxillomandibular fixation (MMF) using dental fixed arch bars. Hence, associated tooth injuries are difficult or impossible
