[Heterogeneity of populations of the mollusc Bithynia inflata according to the degree of trematode infestation in opisthorchiasis foci].

Results of studies of differences in the infection rate of natural populations of Bithynia inflata with trematodes (including Opisthorchis felineus) in the nidi of opisthorchiasis in the Sumsk and Chernigov Districts of the Ukrainian SSR and Tomsk District of the RSFSR are given. It has been shown that in the Ukrain over 1/3 of all populations of the specific intermediate host of opisthorchis does not take part in the circulation of the agent due to fundamentally different reasons: resistence to the infection and hyperinfection with parthenites of trematodes.

Noxious newts and their natural enemies: Experimental effects of tetrodotoxin exposure on trematode parasites and aquatic macroinvertebrates.

The dermal glands of many amphibian species secrete toxins or other noxious substances as a defense strategy against natural enemies. Newts in particular possess the potent neurotoxin tetrodotoxin (TTX), for which the highest concentrations are found in species within the genus Taricha. Adult Taricha are hypothesized to use TTX as a chemical defense against vertebrate predators such as garter snakes (Thamnophis spp.). However, less is known about how TTX functions to defend aquatic-developing newt larvae against natural enemies, including trematode parasites and aquatic macroinvertebrates. Her

Concurrent infections of Fasciola, Schistosoma and Amphistomum spp. in cattle from Kafue and Zambezi river basins of Zambia.

This study investigated interactions among Fasciola gigantica, Schistosoma spp. and Amphistomum spp. concurrent natural infections in Zambian cattle, based on egg and worm counts. In the abattoir 315 cattle were screened for worms of F. gigantica in the liver, Schistosoma spp. in mesenteric veins and/or Amphistomum spp. in the rumen. One hundred and thirty-three (42.2%) of the abattoir-examined cattle harboured one, two or all three trematodes. Of 133 cattle, 50 were randomly selected for worm and egg counts. The mean numbers (+/- SD) of Amphistomum, Schistosoma and Fasciola were 622.08 (+/- 9

Host exposure history and priority effects impact the development and reproduction of a dominant parasite.

Within a single organism, numerous parasites often compete for space and resources. This competition, together with a parasite's ability to locate and successfully establish in a host, can contribute to the distribution and prevalence of parasites. Coinfection with trematodes in snail intermediate hosts is rarely observed in nature, partly due to varying competitive abilities among parasite taxa. Using a freshwater snail host (Biomphalaria glabrata), we studied the ability of a competitively dominant trematode, Echinostoma caproni, to establish and reproduce in a host previously infected with

Diversity of trematodes from the amphibian anomaly P hotspot: Role of planorbid snails.

Trematode infection of the second intermediate hosts can lead to changes in their fitness and, as a result, a change in the invasion rate of animal communities. It is especially pronounced during the invasion of parasite species that reduce activity due to the manipulation of hosts through the changes of their morphology and physiology. One of these cases is an anomaly P syndrome hotspot found in some populations of water frogs and toads in Europe caused by the trematode Strigea robusta metacercariae. The occurrence of pathogen and their participation in ecosystems are intrigues questions in t

Trematode Genomics and Proteomics.

Trematode infections stand out as one of the frequently overlooked tropical diseases, despite their wide global prevalence and remarkable capacity to parasitize diverse host species and tissues. Furthermore, these parasites hold significant socio-economic, medical, veterinary and agricultural implications. Over the past decades, substantial strides have been taken to bridge the information gap concerning various "omic" tools, such as proteomics and genomics, in this field. In this edition of the book, we highlight recent progress in genomics and proteomics concerning trematodes with a particul

Bottom-up and trait-mediated effects of resource quality on amphibian parasitism.

Leaf litter subsidies are important resources for aquatic consumers like tadpoles and snails, causing bottom-up effects on wetland ecosystems. Recent studies have shown that variation in litter nutritional quality can be as important as litter quantity in driving these bottom-up effects. Resource subsidies likely also have indirect and trait-mediated effects on predation and parasitism, but these potential effects remain largely unexplored. We generated predictions for differential effects of litter nutrition and secondary polyphenolic compounds on tadpole (Lithobates sylvatica) exposure and s

Parasite-Driven host manipulation: The case of trematodes in Neotropical tadpoles.

Parasites can impact tadpole survival in both lethal and sublethal ways. Sublethal effects include alterations in morphology and behavior, reduced competitive ability, and increased vulnerability to predation, while lethal effects result in direct mortality. These impacts can have significant consequences at both individual and population levels, especially given that amphibians host various parasites and pathogens, which may contribute to population declines. This study investigated the influence of digenetic trematodes, specifically Lophosicyadiplostomum sp. and Echinostomatidae metacercaria

Interaction between Pseudosuccinea columella (Gastropoda: Lymnaeidae) and trematodes in a fasciolosis-endemic region in Espírito Santo, Brazil.

This study aimed to identify larval forms of trematodes in Pseudosuccinea columella from rural properties with a history of bovine fasciolosis in the southern region of Espírito Santo, Brazil. A malacological survey was carried out on waterbodies from ten properties between June 2022 and March 2023. Aquatic snails were collected, identified, and evaluated for infection with trematode larvae by artificial photostimulation. The larvae found were morphologically characterized under a light microscope, and samples of the snails were subjected to histological analysis to observe larval trematodes i

Detection of Galba truncatula, Fasciola hepatica and Calicophoron daubneyi environmental DNA within water sources on pasture land, a future tool for fluke control?

BACKGROUND: Increasing trematode prevalence and disease occurrence in livestock is a major concern. With the global spread of anthelmintic resistant trematodes, future control strategies must incorporate approaches focusing on avoidance of infection. The reliance of trematodes on intermediate snail hosts to successfully complete their life-cycle means livestock infections are linked to the availability of respective snail populations. By identifying intermediate snail host habitats, infection risk models may be strengthened whilst farmers may confidently apply pasture management strategies to

A fatal Pegosomum sp. (Trematoda: Echinostomatidae) infection in a wild cattle egret (Bubulcus ibis) from Japan.

An adult cattle egret (Bubulcus ibis) caught in Kobe of Hyogo Prefecture, Japan, in December 1995 died of a severe infection associated with the trematode parasite Pegosomum sp. At necropsy, 22 trematode parasites were found in the lumen of the bile duct, and the duct wall was markedly thickened. Histopathologically, severe cholangitis and cholecystitis were observed in close association with the parasites in the bile duct. Severe Pegosomum sp. infection may be one of the factors contributing to the mortality of wild cattle egrets. This is the first reported case of the genus Pegosomum infecti

Development, validation, and pilot application of a high throughput molecular xenomonitoring assay to detect Schistosoma mansoni and other trematode species within Biomphalaria freshwater snail hosts.

Schistosomiasis is a neglected tropical disease (NTD) caused by infection with parasitic trematodes of the genus Schistosoma that can lead to debilitating morbidity and mortality. The World Health Organization recommend molecular xenomonitoring of Biomphalaria spp. freshwater snail intermediate hosts of Schistosoma mansoni to identify highly focal intestinal schistosomiasis transmission sites and monitor disease transmission, particularly in low-endemicity areas. A standardised protocol to do this, however, is needed. Here, two previously published primer sets were selected to develop and vali

First report of the air sac trematode Circumvitellatrema momota (Digenea: Cyclocoelidae) in cracid birds from Central America: pathological findings and phylogenetic confirmation.

An adult female great curassow (Crax rubra) and an adult female crested guan (Penelope purpurascens) were examined post-mortem and found to harbour trematode flukes in their pulmonary air sacs and coelom, with severe pathological changes. Seven trematode specimens (four from C. rubra and three from P. purpurascens) were stained with hydrochloric acid-carmine for optical microscopy, while four specimens (two from each bird species) were submitted to molecular analysis. Morphological and molecular analyses identified the specimens as Circumvitellatrema momota. Phylogenetic analysis showed that C

MOLECULAR GENETICS UNVEIL HOST SPECIFICITY OF TREMATODES IN TWO COGENERIC BATILLARIA SNAILS.

Host specificity is essential to understanding the ecology and evolution of parasites, and it is often complicated to estimate because of the presence of morphologically similar but genetically distinct species. Morphological identification of larval trematodes is often challenging because of the lack of diagnostic characteristics that only appear in the sexually mature adult stage. The difficulty in accurate species identification may obscure their compatibility with the host species. We investigate the parasites infecting 2 Asian mud snail species, Batillaria multiformis and Batillaria attra

Morphological and molecular assessment of muscle metacercariae infecting tench Tinca tinca from fish farms and wild populations in Germany.

Fish can be infected with metacercariae (the final larval stage) of different species of potentially zoonotic digenetic trematodes (flukes). The fish-borne zoonotic trematodes thus compromise food safety and present a major threat for human health. Reducing the risk of human infections requires careful assessment and accurate taxonomic identification of these parasites. Here, we analysed metacercariae in muscle tissue of tench (Tinca tinca), sampled between March and September 2022 from three fish farms and three natural waterbodies in Germany. Whenever possible, we combined morphological and

Clonorchis sinensis and Echinostoma hortense detected by endoscopy and molecular characterization: two case reports and update on diagnosis.

Clonorchis sinensis (C. sinensis) and Echinostoma hortense (E. Hortense) infections represent significant food-borne zoonotic parasitic diseases. C. sinensis stands as the primary parasite underlying cholangitis, cholelithiasis, and even cholangiocarcinoma, whereas E. Hortense parasitizes the duodenum. Unfortunately, the non-specific clinical presentations of these two trematodes frequently mislead clinicians, resulting in overlooks or misdiagnoses, and consequently, inadequate treatment. We diagnosed digestive system trematodes through endoscopic observation and molecular methods. Herein, we

The role of rice fields, fish ponds and water canals for transmission of fish-borne zoonotic trematodes in aquaculture ponds in Nam Dinh Province, Vietnam.

BACKGROUND: Fish-borne zoonotic trematodes (FZT), such as Clonorchis sinensis, Opistorchis viverini (Opisthorchiidae) and intestinal trematodes of the family Heterophyidae, constitute a public health hazard in Vietnam and infections with these trematodes has been linked to consumption of raw or undercooked fish from aquaculture. The FZT transmission pathways, however, are more complicated than just the presence of intermediate snail hosts in aquaculture ponds as ponds may exchange water with surrounding habitats such as rice fields and irrigation canals and thereby these surrounding habitats m

Schistosoma japonicum Associated With Colorectal Cancer.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is one of the most common cancers worldwide, with increasing prevalence in Asian countries with a crude incidence of 21.1 per 100,000. Schistosoma is a genus of trematodes that infect millions of humans, affecting multiple organs, notably the intestines, liver, and bladder. Those trematodes may cause chronic inflammation in the affected organ leading to long-term complications such as fibrosis and neoplasia. There is rising evidence that infection with Schistosoma japonicum is correlated with the liver and CRC in endemic Asian countries. It is reported that chronic infe
