Climate change impacts on the global potential distribution of the human flea, Pulex irritans, and the global health risks.

The human flea, Pulex irritans, is a hematophagous ectoparasite and medically significant vector of zoonotic pathogens, such as Yersinia pestis (plague), Bartonella quintana (trench fever), and Rickettsia felis (flea-borne spotted fever). Despite the public health significance of P. irritans, the potential impacts of climate change on its global distribution were unstudied before. In this study, we created an ecological niche model (ENM) through integrating 564 georeferenced records and 15 bioclimatic variables using the Maximum Entropy (MaxEnt) algorithm to project the current and future habi

Bartonella (Rochalimaea) quintana bacteremia in inner-city patients with chronic alcoholism.

BACKGROUND: Bartonella (Rochalimaea) quintana is a fastidious gram-negative bacterium known to cause trench fever, cutaneous bacillary angiomatosis, and endocarditis. Between January and June 1993 in Seattle, we isolated B. quintana from 34 blood cultures obtained from 10 patients not known to be infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). METHODS: After identifying the isolates as B. quintana by direct immunofluorescence and DNA-hybridization studies, we determined strain hybridization with studies of restriction-fragment-length polymorphisms (RFLPs) of the intergenic spacer (nonco

Mapping the tRNA Modification Landscape of Bartonella henselae Houston I and Bartonella quintana Toulouse.

Transfer RNA (tRNA) modifications play a crucial role in maintaining translational fidelity and efficiency, and they may function as regulatory elements in stress response and virulence. Despite their pivotal roles, a comprehensive mapping of tRNA modifications and their associated synthesis genes is still limited, with a predominant focus on free-living bacteria. In this study, we employed a multidisciplinary approach, incorporating comparative genomics, mass spectrometry, and next-generation sequencing, to predict the set of tRNA modification genes responsible for tRNA maturation in two intr

An immunocompromised murine model of chronic Bartonella infection.

Bartonella are ubiquitous gram-negative pathogens that cause chronic blood stream infections in mammals. Two species most often responsible for human infection, B. henselae and B. quintana, cause prolonged febrile illness in immunocompetent hosts, known as cat scratch disease and trench fever, respectively. Fascinatingly, in immunocompromised hosts, these organisms also induce new blood vessel formation leading to the formation of angioproliferative tumors, a disease process named bacillary angiomatosis. In addition, they cause an endothelial-lined cystic disease in the liver known as bacillar

New pathogens, and diseases old and new. I) Afipia felis and Rochalimaea. II) Parvovirus B 19. III) herpesvirus 6.

The paper describes events that in the last fifteen years, have led to the identification of the aetiological agents of three widely known diseases: cat scratch disease, erythema infectiosum and exanthem subitum. The particular features of Afipia felis and Rochalimaea, Parvovirus B 19 and Herpesvirus 6 are presented. The paternity of new diseases (i.e. bacillary angiomatosis, bacillary peliosis hepatitis, LES-like syndrome, chronic fatigue syndrome, petechial glove and sock syndrome, etc.) has also been attributed to some of these pathogens as has the paternity of some older ones (i.e. aplasti

Isolation of Rochalimaea species from cutaneous and osseous lesions of bacillary angiomatosis.

BACKGROUND: Bacillary angiomatosis is characterized by vascular lesions, which occur usually in patients infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). A newly described gram-negative organism, Rochalimaea henselae, has been associated with cutaneous bacillary angiomatosis, but no organism has been isolated and cultivated directly from cutaneous tissue. METHODS: We used two methods to isolate the infecting bacterium from four HIV-infected patients with cutaneous lesions suggestive of bacillary angiomatosis: cultivation with eukaryotic tissue-culture monolayers and direct plating of hom

Bartonella quintana bacteremia and overproduction of interleukin-10: model of bacterial persistence in homeless people.

Chronic asymptomatic bacteremia caused by Bartonella quintana occurs in homeless people, but its pathophysiology is unknown. We investigated homeless people with bacteremia to determine whether the persistence of B. quintana is associated with a specific immune profile. Homeless people without B. quintana infection exhibited an inflammatory profile--levels of circulating markers of leukocyte activation (soluble interleukin [IL]-2 receptor and neopterin) and cytokines released by mononuclear cells (tumor necrosis factor, IL-1beta, IL-6, and IL-10) were significantly higher than levels in health

Culture and antibiotic susceptibility of Bartonella quintana in human erythrocytes.

Bartonella quintana, the agent of trench fever, has recently been implicated in various diseases, in particular, bacteremia and endocarditis in homeless people. The host cell of Bartonella spp. is believed to be the erythrocyte, and in the present study we demonstrate that B. quintana can be cultured in vitro in human erythrocytes. The bacteria were found to be intraerythrocytic by laser confocal microscopy with Bartonella species-specific monoclonal antibodies. Infections with B. quintana decreased the life span of erythrocytes in culture from 8.6 to 4.8 days. In the culture system we found t

The Janus face of Bartonella quintana recognition by Toll-like receptors (TLRs): a review.

Bartonella quintana (B. quintana) is a facultative, intracellular bacterium, which causes trench fever, chronic bacteraemia and bacillary angiomatosis. Little is known about the recognition of B. quintana by the innate immune system. In this review, we address the impact of Toll-like receptors (TLRs) on the recognition of B. quintana and the activation of the host defense. When experimental models using human mononuclear cells, transfected CHO cells, or TLR2-/- and TLR4-/- mice were used, differential effects of TLR2 and TLR4 have been observed. B. quintana micro-organisms stimulated cytokine

Occurrence of Bartonella henselae and Bartonella quintana among human immunodeficiency virus-infected patients.

The purpose of this study was to determine the seroprevalence against Bartonella henselae and Bartonella quintana among a risk group, patients with HIV infection, and to identify the epidemiological factors involved. Our data indicate that the prevalence of Bartonella infection among HIV-infected patients is much greater than that in the healthy population of the same area and that Bartonella infection should be considered in the differential diagnosis for patients with HIV disease.

Experimental infection of human erythrocytes from alcoholic patients with Bartonella quintana.

Bartonella spp. are found in the erythrocytes of their specific natural hosts and B. quintana bacteremia is associated epidemiologically with lice, alcoholism, and homelessness. The aim of our study was to compare the growth and the number of bacteria per erythrocyte in vitro in laboratory-infected red blood cells from alcoholic patients versus normal blood donor erythrocytes. Enumeration of bacteria was performed either with plate counting or with a real-time PCR quantitative assay. Number of bacteria per cell was determined using immunofluorescence assay and laser confocal microscopy. Althou

Current knowledge of Bartonella species.

Bartonella species are now considered emerging pathogens. Of the 11 currently recognized species, four have been implicated in human disease, although only two have been encountered in Europe. Bartonella quintana infections are now being diagnosed among the urban homeless and deprived, manifesting as trench fever, and Bartonella henselae has been shown to be the causative agent of cat scratch disease. Both species also cause a variety of HIV-associated infections, including bacillary anglomatosis. However, perhaps the most significant presentation of bartonellae infection is culture-negative e

Inter- and intraspecies identification of Bartonella (Rochalimaea) species.

Species of the genus Rochalimaea, recently renamed Bartonella, are of a growing medical interest. Bartonella quintana was reported as the cause of trench fever, endocarditis, and bacillary angiomatosis. B. henselae has been implicated in symptoms and infections of human immunodeficiency virus-infected patients, such as fever, endocarditis, and bacillary angiomatosis, and is involved in the etiology of cat scratch disease. Such a wide spectrum of infections makes it necessary to obtain an intraspecies identification tool in order to perform epidemiological studies. B. vinsonii, B. elizabethae,

Brief communication: evidence of Bartonella quintana infections in skeletons of a historical mass grave in Kassel, Germany.

In 2008, a mass grave was found on the grounds of the University of Kassel, Germany. Historians hypothesized that the individuals died in a typhoid fever epidemic in winter 1813/14. To test this hypothesis, the bones were investigated on the presence of specific DNA of pathogens linked to the historical diagnosis oftyphoid fever. It was possible to prove the specific DNA of Bartonella quintana in three individuals, suggesting that their cause of death is linked to an epidemic background.

Detection of Bartonella (Rochalimaea) quintana by routine acridine orange staining of broth blood cultures.

Bartonella quintana was isolated from 34 BACTEC nonradiometric aerobic resin blood cultures for 10 adults. Nine patients were initially diagnosed by routine acridine orange staining of routine cultures that had been incubated for 8 days. All subcultures grew on chocolate agar within 3 to 12 days (median, 6 days). The PLUS 26 high-volume aerobic resin medium, combined with acridine orange stain and subculture, is an effective system for detection and isolation of B. quintana from blood.

Human pediculosis: a critical health problem and what about nursing policy?

Lice infestation on the human body (also known as pediculosis) is very common. Cases number in the hundreds of millions worldwide. Three distinct presentations of lice infection exist and each is caused by a unique parasite. Head lice (Pediculus humanus capitis) is by far and away the most common infestation and favors no particular socioeconomic group. A genetically close "cousin," Pediculus humanus corporis, is responsible for body lice and is more commonly associated with poverty, overcrowding, and poor hygiene. Pubic lice (crabs) are caused by Pthirus pubis and is transmitted by intimate a
