Two cases of domestically acquired fascioliasis are reported. Patient One was a 63-year-old male who developed a febrile illness 2 months after eating watercress in Marin County. Patient Two was a 38-year-old male who had eaten watercress with Patient One, and also developed a febrile illness. Both patients had eosinophilia and liver lesions on imaging. Diagnosis was made by serology and treatment was with triclabendazole.

We present the case of a 17 years old man with fasciola hepatica infection. After initial therapy with Praziquantel and Metronidazole abdominal pain as well as eosinophilia persisted. The diagnosis was made by ERC and examination of the bile, where typical ovulas were found. An analysis of faeces and the serology (ELISA, IFAT) were not diagnosticated. After papillotomy, extraction of the parasites and therapy with Triclabendazole the patient became asymptomatic, the serology turned to negative and the haematology was normalised.

Fascioliasis, an uncommon liver disease in children, is caused by the trematode Fasciola hepatica. Its clinical and laboratory findings may mimic several disorders of the liver, including malignancies. Diagnosis is usually made by demonstrating the presence of the parasite in liver tissue or the stool, or by serology, but many children are diagnosed incidentally. Described here are the clinical, laboratory and radiological features of five pediatric fascioliasis cases with different clinical pictures presenting over a period of five years, all of whom were successfully cured with oral triclabe

Dicrocoeliasis (Lancet liver fluke disease) is caused by Dicrocoelium dendriticum, a trematode living in bile ducts of sheep, cattle and other mammals including man. Human infection is asymptomatic or mild to moderately severe, but being sporadic or rarely reported. This paper reported zoonotic dicrocoeliasis dendriticum among a farmer's family and his domestic animals. The father and mother were successfully treated with Triclabendazole and the children and animals were successfully treated with Mirazid and Oleo-resin solution of Commiphora molmol respectively.

Fasciolosis is a devastating food borne parasitic disease of ruminants and is mainly caused by infection with the trematode Fasciola hepatica (liver fluke) in temperate climates. The primary strategy of fasciolosis control relies on a single drug, triclabendazole, although nitroxinil, albendazole, closantel, rafoxanide and clorsulon can also be used to treat chronic infections. Unfortunately, growing evidence indicates that triclabendazole resistant liver fluke populations are pervasive. Therefore, identifying new chemical matter with anthelmintic properties as starting points for drug develop

Understanding drug penetration, distribution, and metabolization is fundamental for understanding drug efficacy. This also accounts for parasites during antiparasitic treatment. Recently, we established matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization (MALDI) mass spectrometry imaging (MSI) in blood flukes and liver flukes. This label-free technique is capable of visualizing the molecular distribution of endogenous and exogenous molecules, such as drug compounds. Here, we conducted atmospheric-pressure scanning microprobe MALDI MSI (AP-SMALDI MSI) of tissue sections of adult Fasciola hepatica that

OBJECTIVE: To carry out clinical diagnosis and treatment of Fasciola gigantica infection during an outbreak in Yunnan Province.
METHODS: Data on epidemiology, diagnosis and treatment were collected from 27 patients. A questionnaire survey to the patients and partial villagers was carried out including history of raw food-eating and pet-raising. Animal feces were collected and examined by precipitation method and eggs incubation method. Cattle from two patients families were dissected to find Fasciola infection. Serum samples from patients, family members, and villagers were detected. Possible

A 52-year-old woman presented several months after returning from a visit to Turkey with stomach-ache and fever. Laboratory results showed leucocytosis with marked eosinophilia. Furthermore, serum liver enzyme activities were slightly elevated. A CT scan of the abdomen showed several spots which, on a later scan, had migrated. Serologic tests confirmed the clinical diagnosis of fascioliasis. The patient was successfully treated with triclabendazole. Infection presumably occurred after eating watercress which the patient had bought on a market in Turkey.

Fasciolosis is a zoonosis affecting ruminants, caused by the liver flukes Fasciola (F.) hepatica, and F. gigantica, which infect at least 2.4 million people worldwide. This disease may occur in cluster or family infections or after travel in high-risk areas such as the Nile Delta in Egypt, Iran, Turkey, South-East Asia, Mexico, the Caribbean and the Andean Altiplano. In Europe, fasciolosis occurs more frequently in Portugal, Spain and France, although autochthonous infections have also been reported from Ireland and Germany. Infectious metacercariae are ingested with contaminated water or raw

Fasciola hepatica (F. hepatica) as a foodborne trematode can occasionally cause hepatobiliary diseases. We report a 67-year-old woman who was referred to our center because of the diagnosis of cholangitis. She was a resident of mountainous area with the history of unsafe water and contaminated vegetables. Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) was performed as a diagnostic and therapeutic modality for her. Three living F. hepatica was removed from biliary tract with a basket via ERCP. Clinical and laboratory condition of the patient improved after therapy of antibiotics and tric

The gap in the antiparasitic armamentarium is still not filled in 2006 and few original and useful drugs were marketed in the last decade. Against malaria, artemether combined with lumefantrine is adopted as first line therapy in a majority of endemic countries but still not available in France and several european countries. As its tolerance and efficacy are satisfactory, atovaquone-proguanil, is taking a major place for prevention and treatment in travellers. Liposomal amphothericin B and miltefosine extended the treatment of visceral leishmaniasis. Nitazoxanide and triclabendazole may be us

Fasciola hepatica is a worldwide distributed zoonotic trematode incidentally infecting humans. Although often symptomatic, fascioliasis can cause a wide spectrum of disease. The diagnosis can be established by stool examination detecting ova of the parasite, although serological testing has a higher sensitivity and specificity in the acute phase of disease. This case presents a 24-year-old Somalian man admitted with jaundice and abdominal discomfort due to fascioliasis after chewing khat. The patient was treated successfully with a single dose of triclabendazole.

Fascioliasis is an important zoonosis caused by Fasciola spp. It can cause pathological damages to human liver and gallbladder, as well as economic loss in animal husbandry. Fascioliasis can be easily misdiagnosed with other hepatobiliary diseases. The appearance of resistance to triclabendazole is an issue problem for fascioliasis control. Therefore, research for better diagnostic methods, effective drugs and vaccines become to the focus of fascioliasis control. This article summarizes the progress on epidemiological status, diagnostic method, therapy, drug resistance, vaccine and omics of fa

Human fascioliasis, a zoonotic infection caused by the platyhelminths Fasciola hepatica and F. gigantica, is a neglected tropical disease geographically limited to regions in South America, Africa, and Middle and South East Asia. It primarily infects mammals, particularly cattle, which serve as definitive hosts, while freshwater snails act as intermediate hosts. Human infection occurs through ingesting metacercariae found in contaminated water or aquatic plants. The disease presents with right upper abdominal pain, fever, and, at times, jaundice, hepatomegaly, and biliary obstruction. Diagnosi

BACKGROUND: Fascioliasis is one of the most neglected foodborne zoonotic infectious disease, caused by the trematodes Fasciola hepatica and Fasciola gigantica. In last decades, it emerged as a public health problem worldwide, due to the substantial number of human infections. Fascioliasis has also been described in travellers and migrants, with relevance in Travel Medicine.
METHODS: We reported four cases of imported human fascioliasis diagnosed in our Department between 2011 and 2023. Literature search was performed on MEDLINE and Embase. We included case reports and case series on patients

There is a lack of epidemiological data on fascioliasis in Egypt regarding disease characteristics and treatment outcomes across different governorates. We aimed to identify the demographic, epidemiologic, clinical, laboratory, and radiological characteristics and treatment outcomes of patients diagnosed with fascioliasis in Egypt. Data on human fascioliasis were collected retrospectively from patients' medical records in the period between January 2018 and January 2020. The study included 261 patients. More than 40% of enrolled patients were in the age group of 21-40 years old. Geographically

The tegumental changes in adult Fasciola hepatica induced by artemether and artesunate were assessed utilizing scanning electron microscopy (SEM). F. hepatica were incubated with artemether and artesunate for 48h at a concentration of 10microg/ml in the absence or presence of haemin. For the latter experiment both, a triclabendazole-resistant and sensitive F. hepatica isolate were used. For the in vivo studies rats were treated with single 200mg/kg oral doses of artemether and artesunate and flukes recovered from the bile ducts after 24-96h. SEM analysis of the flukes incubated in the presence

Fascioliasis is reported in five Vietnamese children aged 4 years or younger. A 10-month-old girl child and a 12-month-old boy child are the youngest patients ever diagnosed. Eggs in stools suggested an infection occurred at 5-6 months and 7-8 months of age, respectively. DNA sequencing and egg size indicated this to be the first report of a verified Fasciola gigantica infection in so small children. No specific diagnosis could be obtained in two 3-year-old children detected in the acute phase. A big and gravid ectopic F. gigantica-like worm was surgically found in a 4-year-old boy presenting
