The effect of light and temperature on the growth of two subtropical and two temperate grass species.

The effect of light intensity and temperature on the growth of young plants of two temperate (Lolium perenne, Festuca arundinacea) and two subtropical (Lolium rigidum, Bromus unioloides) grass species was studied in the northern part of the GDR under open-air conditions. It was found that the subtropical species reacted highly sensitive to changes in the two environmental factors and showed absolutely higher growth performance during the summer as compared with the temperate species. The multiple regression analysis showed positive correlations between the relative growth rate (RGR) and the ne

Amazon carbon emissions driven by human actions amplified by droughts.

The Amazon carbon sink is weakening as deforestation1-5, rising tree mortality6-8 and climate change disrupt the climatic conditions that sustain a humid tropical forest9-11. Forest loss reduces precipitation, increases temperatures and lengthens the dry season, driving higher carbon emissions1-4,11,12. Climate stress is stronger in more deforested regions, rendering forests progressively more flammable1,9,13. Large-scale climate events, such as El Niño, further amplify regional climate impacts9,14-17. Here we present an analysis of 15 years of Amazonian carbon fluxes derived from atmospheric

A Stochastic Model to Study Rift Valley Fever Persistence with Different Seasonal Patterns of Vector Abundance: New Insights on the Endemicity in the Tropical Island of Mayotte.

Rift Valley fever (RVF) is a zoonotic vector-borne disease causing abortion storms in cattle and human epidemics in Africa. Our aim was to evaluate RVF persistence in a seasonal and isolated population and to apply it to Mayotte Island (Indian Ocean), where the virus was still silently circulating four years after its last known introduction in 2007. We proposed a stochastic model to estimate RVF persistence over several years and under four seasonal patterns of vector abundance. Firstly, the model predicted a wide range of virus spread patterns, from obligate persistence in a constant or trop

A comparison of the clinical and cardiological features of endomyocardial disease in temperate and tropical regions.

This study was designed to compare the clinical and cardiological features of endomyocardial disease in temperate and tropical regions. Eleven patients were studied in the U.K., 47 in India and 8 in Brazil. The patients in the U.K. were older, with a male predominance, and they had a systemic illness: the hypereosinophilic syndrome. Half of these patients presented in the early necrotic stage of the disease, and all had biventricular involvement. On the other hand, patients in the tropical countries were younger, with an equal sex incidence, and were from poor, malnourished communities with he

Seasonality of rotavirus in South Asia: a meta-analysis approach assessing associations with temperature, precipitation, and vegetation index.

BACKGROUND: Rotavirus infection causes a significant proportion of diarrhea in infants and young children worldwide leading to dehydration, hospitalization, and in some cases death. Rotavirus infection represents a significant burden of disease in developing countries, such as those in South Asia. METHODS: We conducted a meta-analysis to examine how patterns of rotavirus infection relate to temperature and precipitation in South Asia. Monthly rotavirus data were abstracted from 39 published epidemiological studies and related to monthly aggregated ambient temperature and cumulative precipitat

Wind shear enhances soil moisture influence on rapid thunderstorm growth.

Convective storms can develop rapidly, creating hazards to local populations through intense precipitation, strong winds and lightning1. The large-scale environment in which thunderstorms develop is often well captured in forecast systems, yet predicting where individual storms will initiate remains a fundamental challenge. It is known that differential heating driven by soil moisture (SM) patterns creates atmospheric circulations that favour convective initiation over drier soils2,3, whereas wind shear between low and mid levels can enhance storm growth4,5. Here we show that the most extreme

Environmental drivers of broiler carcass condemnation in humid subtropical regions: an exploratory study on the association of lagged climatic effects.

Intensive poultry production in humid subtropical agro-ecologies faces unique environmental challenges that compromise carcass quality, welfare, and food security. While climatic influences are recognized, the temporal dimensions of these effects remain largely underexplored. This study quantified the immediate and time-lagged (1-3 months) influences of climatic variables on 12 causes of broiler carcass condemnation in a representative subtropical hub. Longitudinal data (2021-2023) from federally inspected slaughterhouses in Santa Catarina, Brazil, a relevant case study for poultry production

An accurate mathematical model predicting number of dengue cases in tropics.

Dengue fever is a systemic viral infection of epidemic proportions in tropical countries. The incidence of dengue fever is ever increasing and has doubled over the last few decades. Estimated 50million new cases are detected each year and close to 10000 deaths occur each year. Epidemics are unpredictable and unprecedented. When epidemics occur, health services are over whelmed leading to overcrowding of hospitals. At present there is no evidence that dengue epidemics can be predicted. Since the breeding of the dengue mosquito is directly influenced by environmental factors, it is plausible tha

Sperm motion characteristics of GarolexMalpura sheep evolved in a semi-arid tropical environment through introgression of FecB gene.

The arid and semi-arid tropical climates of India are endowed with vast diversity of non-prolific sheep breeds. The GarolexMalpura sheep has been evolved in a semi-arid tropical environment by introgression of FecB gene via artificial insemination of Malpura ewes using diluted semen of prolific microsheep Garole and subsequently multiplied by inter se mating among GarolexMalpura halfbreds. The aim of the present study was to identify FecB mutation in sexually mature GarolexMalpura rams by forced RFLP-PCR of BMPR-1B gene and evaluate: (i) semen production and sperm motion characteristics of GM

Climate Change and Dermatologic Diseases in the Global South: A Rising Challenge.

Climate change is reshaping the epidemiology of dermatologic diseases in the Global South through rising temperatures, UV radiation, extreme weather events, and shifting ecosystems. These environmental stressors exacerbate thermal injuries, infectious and inflammatory dermatoses, and neglected tropical diseases such as cutaneous leishmaniasis, mycetoma, and scabies. Vulnerable populations-including displaced communities, persons with albinism, and outdoor workers-face disproportionate risk. This article highlights the dermatologic impacts of climate change, emphasizing the need for integrated

Predicting Transmission Suitability of Mosquito-Borne Diseases under Climate Change to Underpin Decision Making.

The risk of the mosquito-borne diseases malaria, dengue fever and Zika virus is expected to shift both temporally and spatially under climate change. As climate change projections continue to improve, our ability to predict these shifts is also enhanced. This paper predicts transmission suitability for these mosquito-borne diseases, which are three of the most significant, using the most up-to-date climate change projections. Using a mechanistic methodology, areas that are newly suitable and those where people are most at risk of transmission under the best- and worst-case climate change scena

Dynamic-chemical coupling of the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere region.

The importance of the interaction between chemistry and dynamics in the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere for chemical species like ozone is investigated using two chemistry-climate models and a Lagrangian trajectory model. Air parcels from the upper troposphere, i.e. regions of lightning and aircraft emissions, are able to be transported into the lowermost stratosphere (LMS). Trajectory calculations suggest that the main transport pathway runs via the inter tropical convergence zone, across the tropical tropopause and then to higher latitudes, i.e. into the LMS. NOx from aircraft emiss

Prevalence and seasonal variation of Fasciola hepatica in slaughtered cattle: the role of climate and environmental factors in Mexico.

The objective of this study is to determine the prevalence of Fasciola hepatica infection in cattle slaughterhouses, as well as its association with climatic/environmental factors (derived from satellite data), seasonality and climate regions in two states in Mexico. Condemned livers from slaughtered animals were obtained from three abattoirs in the states of Puebla and Veracruz. The overall prevalence of the parasite in cattle between January and December of 2017 was 20.6% (1407 out of 6834); the highest rate of condemnation was observed in Veracruz (26.3%; tropical climate), and the lowest r

Chancroid, lymphogranuloma venereum, granuloma inguinale, genital herpes simplex infection, and molluscum contagiosum.

Chancroid, lymphogranuloma venereum, and granuloma inguinale may be considered as tropical venereal diseases. These diseases were a major diagnostic and therapeutic challenge in past centuries. Currently, patients with these bacterial infections that are endemic to the tropics occasionally consult with dermatologists in temperate climates. Due to the increasing frequency of travel to the tropics for tourism and work, as well as the increasing number of immigrants from these areas, it is important for dermatologists practicing in temperate climates to be familiar with the dermatologic manifesta

Preface: Sustained cooperation on research and control of neglected tropical diseases among multisectors and multipartners across borders in Southeast Asia.

This special issue is going to introduce the origins of the "Regional Network on Asian Schistosomiasis (RNAS)" which can be traced back to 1996. RNAS was originally a collaboration of scientists from China and Philippines, and then expanded to Cambodia, Indonesia, Japan and Laos, with focusing on research and control of schistosomiasis japonica. However, at its fifth meeting in Bali, Indonesia in 2005, more countries such as Vietnam, Thailand and Korea were brought on board along with a string of neglected tropical diseases such as cysticercosis, clonorchiasis, opisthorchiasis and fascioliasis
