Analysis of the prevalence characteristics and risk factors of pulmonary tuberculosis combined with extrapulmonary tuberculosis in elderly patients.

To analyze the clinical features, epidemiological characteristics, risk factors, and complication characteristics of pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) combined with extrapulmonary tuberculosis (EPTB) in elderly patients (aged > 60 years). Clinical data were collected from pathogen positive elderly patients with PTB hospitalized in a teaching hospital in Zhejiang from 2017 to 2023. We retrospectively analyzed the risk factors for complications of EPTB in elderly patients with PTB by univariate and multivariate logistic regression models. We also described the characteristics of complications in PTB

Extrapulmonary tuberculosis: Mycobacterium tuberculosis strains and host risk factors in a large urban setting in Brazil.

BACKGROUND: Factors related to the development of extrapulmonary forms of tuberculosis (EPTB) are still poorly understood, particularly in high-endemic countries like Brazil. The objective of the paper is to determine host and Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) strain-related factors associated with the development of EPTB in Espírito Santo state, Brazil. METHODS AND FINDINGS: We conducted a retrospective laboratory-based surveillance study of new tuberculosis (TB) cases diagnosed in Espírito Santo state, Brazil between 1998 and 2007. We genotyped 612 isolates of MTB from 606 TB patients using

Prevalence of extrapulmonary tuberculosis in Indonesia: protocol for systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Extrapulmonary tuberculosis (EPTB) is a significant public health issue in Indonesia, a country with a high tuberculosis burden. EPTB accounts for 15%-20% of global TB cases, with the proportion rising in populations co-infected with HIV. In Indonesia, estimates of EPTB prevalence vary significantly due to inconsistencies in diagnostic criteria, population demographics and methodologies. These variations highlight the need for a systematic review to synthesise existing evidence and provide a comprehensive understanding of EPTB's epidemiology in Indonesia. This study aims to consoli

Clinical misconceptions and diagnostic delays in extrapulmonary tuberculosis: an evaluation on 89 cases.

INTRODUCTION: Extrapulmonary tuberculosis (EPTB) has highly variable clinical findings, and has a more difficult diagnostic process than pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB). The aim of this study was to examine the difficulty of the diagnostic process in 89 cases that applied to different clinics in our hospital, with different complaints. METHODOLOGY: A total of 89 patients diagnosed with EPTB between March 2020 and March 2024 were included in the study. EPTB diagnosis was determined by excluding patients with primary PTB. RESULTS: The mean age of the cases was 47.84 ± 19.23 years, and 52 (58.4%)

Factors Associated With Extrapulmonary Tuberculosis in Southeastern Mexico: A Case-Control Study.

INTRODUCTION: Extrapulmonary tuberculosis (EPTB) is a disease that can affect any organ or tissue. Due to its potential to cause more dangerous sequelae and the barriers to its timely diagnosis, greater clinical awareness of this disease is crucial. This study aimed to identify the factors associated with EPTB in the population of Oaxaca, Mexico. METHODS: This is an unpaired case-control study. The cases were patients with EPTB+ while the controls were patients with pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB+) registered in the Tuberculosis Epidemiological Surveillance System. Sociodemographic, clinical, an

An Uncommon Presentation of Extrapulmonary Tuberculosis Masquerading as Ovarian Malignancy in a Young Female.

Tuberculosis (TB) is chronic granulomatous infection caused by bacteria, Mycobacterium tuberculosis, which primarily involves the lungs. Abdominal TB is an extrapulmonary disease which can mimic malignancy, especially in women with ascites, weight loss, and high cancer antigen-125 levels. Here, we report a case of young female, where clinical and radiological features were suggestive of ovarian malignancy. However, the pattern of uptake on flourine-18 fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography raised the suspicion of a chronic infectious disease. The final diagnosis wa

[Comparative evaluation of 113 cases with severe and mild forms of extrapulmonary tuberculosis].

Tuberculosis, one of the oldest diseases of human beings, has still high mortality rates. In this prospective study, 113 HIV seronegative patients with extrapulmonary tuberculosis (EPT) who were admitted to our department between January 2001 and July 2006 have been evaluated and cases with severe or mild forms of EPT have been compared with respect to epidemiological and clinical features, laboratory results and treatment outcomes. The age range of the patients were 16-78 years old (mean age: 46.3 +/- 16.9 years), and 64 of them (56.6%) were female. Severe and mild forms of EPT were diagnosed

Clinical utility of a T cell-based assay in the diagnosis of extrapulmonary tuberculosis.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the QuantiFERON TB-2G (QFT-2G) results in patients with active extrapulmonary tuberculosis (E-TB) to determine whether QFT-2G test might be a reliable diagnostic method for detecting active E-TB infection compared with the tuberculin skin test (TST). METHODS: TST and QFT-2G tests were performed for 35 patients with confirmed E-TB, 30 with probable E-TB and 45 who did not have E-TB. RESULTS: For patients with confirmed E-TB, the positive rate of the TST was 57% and that of the QFT-2G test was 86%. For patients with probable E-TB,

[The epidemiological and clinical aspects of extrapulmonary tuberculosis in children and adolescents in Primorsk Region].

The incidence of extrapulmonary tuberculosis has been studied in children and adolescents in the Primorye Territory in 1996 to 2001. There is a decrease in the incidence and prevalence of extrapulmonary tuberculosis in both children and adolescents, which does not reflect the true situation as the process is more frequently diagnosed on their referral in the period of late clinical manifestations. Young age children have fallen ill more frequently (54.7%); 76% of the patients were identified on their referral. Most children are permanent residents and live in the high- and middle-class familie

Extrapulmonary tuberculosis revisited: a review of experience at Boston City and other hospitals.

During a 10-year period, 136 patients with extrapulmonary tuberculosis were seen at Boston City Hospital and other hospitals affiliated with Boston University School of Medicine. Review of these cases revealed that the prevalence of extrapulmonary tuberculosis was declining less rapidly than that of pulmonary disease. Extrapulmonary disease represented 4.5% of all new cases of active tuberculosis and tended to occur in older patients than in previous reports. Sites of involvement included lymph nodes, blood, genitourinary tract, bone and articular sites, the meninges, peritoneum, adrenal gland

Diagnostic Approach to Extrapulmonary Tuberculosis by Cartridge-based Nucleic Acid Amplification Test.

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis (TB) is a highly infectious disease causing millions of cases worldwide. Though pulmonary TB is the most common form of infection, extrapulmonary cases are also very rampant and are responsible for a large number of cases. But the diagnosis of extrapulmonary cases is quite difficult because of varied manifestations and the paucibacillary nature of the infection. Cartridge-based nucleic acid amplification test (CBNAAT) is a simple, rapid test that is very efficient in the early diagnosis of these extrapulmonary cases [extrapulmonary TB (EPTB)]. AIM: A study was done to

Extrapulmonary Tuberculosis masquerading as chest wall malignancy: Just never ceases to surprise!

With the emergence of the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome, we witnessed a higher incidence of disseminated and extrapulmonary tuberculosis. The infection sites commonly include lymph nodes, pleura, and osteoarticular areas, although any organ can be involved. Given the atypical presentation of the extrapulmonary disease, it poses a significant diagnostic challenge for the physicians; therefore, a high index of suspicion should be maintained, particularly where tuberculosis is endemic. Here we present a case of isolated chest wall tuberculosis in an immunocompetent patient.
