Self-activated ultrahigh chemosensitivity of oxide thin film nanostructures for transparent sensors.

One of the top design priorities for semiconductor chemical sensors is developing simple, low-cost, sensitive and reliable sensors to be built in handheld devices. However, the need to implement heating elements in sensor devices, and the resulting high power consumption, remains a major obstacle for the realization of miniaturized and integrated chemoresistive thin film sensors based on metal oxides. Here we demonstrate structurally simple but extremely efficient all oxide chemoresistive sensors with ~90% transmittance at visible wavelengths. Highly effective self-activation in anisotropicall

3H-Phosphaallenes Revisited: Facile Synthesis by Hydroalumination of Alkynylphosphines and β-Elimination, Stability and Trapping of Transient Species by Coordination to Transition Metal Atoms.

A facile method for the efficient synthesis of 3H-phosphaallenes, R-P=C=C(H)-R', is presented, which comprises treatment of dialkynylphosphines with dialkylaluminium hydrides (hydroalumination) and elimination of aluminium alkynides from intermediate alkenyl-alkynylphosphines. The stability of the phosphaallenes depends on steric shielding by the substituents at phosphorus (aryl or CH(SiMe3 )2 groups). Only supermesityl compounds are persistent at room temperature in solution. This simple method starting with easily accessible dialkynylphosphines and commercially available aluminium hydrides (

Knifing Action of WS2 Nanosheets Toward the Inner Membrane of Escherichia coli Compared to Its Mild and Conditional Detrimental Effect on the Bacterial Membrane of S. aureus.

The global rise in mortality rates due to drug-resistant infections necessitates the development of medicinal alternatives, with membrane-targeting antibacterial nanomaterials representing a promising strategy due to their inherently low propensity for resistance development. Notably, two-dimensional transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), such as tungsten disulfide (WS2), have emerged as promising broad-spectrum, membrane-mediated antibacterial agents with favorable biocompatibility. Herein, we investigate the antibacterial mode of action of WS2 nanosheets against two popular pathogenic bact

PEGylated (NH4)xWO3 nanorod mediated rapid photonecrosis of breast cancer cells.

Photothermal therapy has emerged as a potential minimally invasive technique to destroy malignant cells with high selectivity. It utilizes low band gap nanoscale materials as photothermal agents dispersed at the affected area to increase the temperature locally by absorbing radiation in the near infrared (NIR) region and destroys the cells. In an effort to develop a photothermal agent with high efficacy for photothermal therapy, we found that (NH4)xWO3 nanorods of length 0.5-1.0 μm and diameter ∼100 nm could destroy breast cancer cells rapidly when irradiated with a wavelength in the therapeut

Molybdenum Metallopharmaceuticals Candidate Compounds - The "Renaissance" of Molybdenum Metallodrugs?

Metal-based drugs, also called "metallopharmaceuticals" or "metallodrugs", are examples of sophisticated compounds that have been used in inorganic medicinal chemistry as therapeutic agents for a long time. Few of them have shown substantially promising results and many of them have been used in different phases of clinical trials. The Mo-based metallodrugs were successfully applied in the past for treating conditions such as anemia or Wilson's disease. Moreover, Mo complexes are supposed to exert their effect by intercalation/ cleavage of DNA/RNA, arrest of the cell cycle, and alteration of c

A method to form semiconductor quantum dot (QD) thin films by igniting a flame at air-liquid interface: CdS and WO3.

We reveal an easy, inexpensive, efficient one stepflame synthesis of semiconductor/metal oxide thin films at air-liquid interface, subsequently, transferred on suitable substrate. The method has been illustrated by the formation of CdS and WO3 QDs thin films. The features of the present method are (1) Growth of thin films consisting of0.5-2.0nm sized Quantum Dots (QDs)/(ultra-small nanoparticles) in a short time, at the air-liquid interface which can be suitably transferred by a well-known Blodgett technique to an appropriate substrate, (2) The method is suitable to apply layer by layer (LbL)

FePO4/WB as an efficient heterogeneous Fenton-like catalyst for rapid removal of neonicotinoid insecticides: ROS quantification, mechanistic insights and degradation pathways.

Iron-based catalysts for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation hold considerable potential in water treatment. However, the slow conversion of Fe(III) to Fe(II) restricts its large-scale application. Herein, an iron phosphate tungsten boride composite (FePO4/WB) was synthesized by a simple hydrothermal method to facilitate the Fe(III)/Fe(II) redox cycle and realize the efficient degradation of neonicotinoid insecticides (NEOs). Based on electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) characterization, scavenging experiments, chemical probe approaches, and quantitative tests, both radicals (HO• and SO4⋅-) a

Design of a visible light driven photo-electrochemical/electro-Fenton coupling oxidation system for wastewater treatment.

In this study, we report on a photo-electrochemical/electro-Fenton oxidation (PEC/EF) system by coupling visible light driven photo-electrochemical oxidation (PEC) and electro-Fenton oxidation (EF) in an undivided cell. Bi2WO6 nanoplates deposited on FTO glass (Bi2WO6/FTO) and Fe@Fe2O3 core-shell nanowires supported on activated carbon fiber (Fe@Fe2O3/ACF) were used as the anode and the cathode in the PEC/EF system, respectively. This novel PEC/EF system showed much higher activity than the single PEC and EF systems on degradation of rhodamine B in aqueous solution at natural pH. Moreover, the

Seasonal changes-facilitated release of phosphorus and tungsten from the Lake Taihu sediments through reductive dissolution of Fe/Mn (hydr)oxides and competitive adsorption with dissolved organic matter.

The release of phosphorus (P) and tungsten (W) from sediments can contribute to eutrophication and heavy metal contamination in water bodies, respectively. This study simultaneously investigated the seasonal variation characteristics of P and W in sediments in Meiliang Bay, China. The results indicated that seasonal variations in pH, dissolved oxygen (DO), and temperature (T) at the sediment-water interface influenced the P and W composition as well as their release from sediments. The diffusion fluxes of soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP) and soluble W (except in winter) were 0.145-2.881 mg⋅m-

Monte-Carlo study of contrast-enhanced spectral mammography with cadmium telluride photon-counting x-ray detectors.

BACKGROUND: Contrast-enhanced spectral mammography (CESM) with photon-counting x-ray detectors (PCDs) can be used to improve the classification of breast cancers as benign or malignant. Commercially-available PCD-based mammography systems use silicon-based PCDs. Cadmium-telluride (CdTe) PCDs may provide a practical advantage over silicon-based PCDs because they can be implemented as large-area detectors that are more easily adaptable to existing mammography systems. PURPOSE: The purpose of this work is to optimize CESM implemented with CdTe PCDs and to investigate the influence of the number

Mobility of multiple heavy metalloids in contaminated soil under various redox conditions: Effects of iron sulfide presence and phosphate competition.

The mobility of heavy metalloids including As, Sb, Mo, W, and Cr in soil was investigated under both reducing and oxidizing conditions. The effects of soil mineralogy and the presence of competitive anions were studied as important factors affecting the mobility of these contaminants. Batch experiments conducted with the addition of oxidized and fresh FeS exhibited enhanced sorption rates for As and W under oxidizing conditions, and for Mo under reducing conditions. The inhibitory effect of phosphate on the sorption rates was most apparent for As and Mo under both oxidizing and reducing condit

Photocatalytic reduction and recovery of mercury by polyoxometalates.

Photocatalytic reduction of mercury in aqueous solutions using PW12O40(3-) or SiW12O40(4-) as photocatalysts has been studied as a function of irradiation time, concentration of Hg(II), polyoxometalate, and organic substrate in the presence or absence of dioxygen. The photocatalytic cycle starts with irradiation of polyoxometalate, goes through the oxidation of, for instance, propan-2-ol (used as sacrificial reagent), and closes with the reoxidation of reduced polyoxometalate by Hg2+ ions. Mercury(II) is reduced to mercury(I) and finally to Hg(0) giving a dark-gray deposit, following a staged
