The Power of Vitamin D: Is the Future in Precision Nutrition through Personalized Supplementation Plans?

In the last few decades, vitamin D has undeniably been one of the most studied nutrients. Despite our ability to produce vitamin D through sunlight exposure, its presence in several natural food sources and fortified foods, and its widespread availability as a dietary supplement, vitamin D deficiency is a serious public health problem, affecting nearly 50% of the global population. Low serum levels of vitamin D are being associated with increased susceptibility to numerous health conditions, including respiratory infections, mental health, autoimmune diseases, and different cancer types. Role of Vitamin D Metabolism and Activity on Carcinogenesis.

The vitamin D endocrine system regulates a broad variety of independent biological processes, and its deficiency is associated with rickets, bone diseases, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and tuberculosis. Cellular and molecular studies have also shown that it is implicated in the suppression of cancer cell invasion, angiogenesis, and metastasis. Sunlight exposure and consequent increased circulating levels of vitamin D are associated with reduced occurrence and a reduced mortality in different histological types of cancer, including those resident in the skin, prostate, breast, colon, ovar

Ordinal linguistic personification as a variant of synesthesia.

This study examines the principles underlying ordinal linguistic personification (OLP): the involuntary and automatic tendency in certain individuals to attribute animate-like qualities such as personality and gender to sequential linguistic units (e.g., letters, numerals, days, months). This article aims to provide four types of evidence that OLP constitutes a form of synesthesia and is likely to have the same neurodevelopmental basis. We show that (a) OLP significantly co-occurs with other variants of synesthesia, (b) OLP associations (like those of synesthesia) are highly consistent over ti

Behavioral assessment of feeding problems of individuals with severe disabilities.

As many as 80% of the individuals with severe or profound mental retardation exhibit feeding problems. Although behavioral interventions have been used to treat these problems, no assessment procedure for determining a functional relationship between a person's acceptance of food and the type and texture of that food has been reported. The purpose of this study was to test a behavioral assessment procedure for a feeding problem of limited intake. Five individuals with severe or profound mental retardation were fed 10 to 12 types of foods with one or more textures. Behavioral categories of acce

Stratification of the immunotypes of tongue squamous cell carcinoma to improve prognosis and the response to immune checkpoint inhibitors.

OBJECTIVES: An understanding of the tumor immune microenvironment is required to improve treatment, especially the selection of immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs). In this study, we stratified the immunotypes of tongue squamous cell carcinoma (TSCC) based on the results of comprehensive immune profiling. METHODS: We enrolled 87 therapy-naïve TSCC and 17 ICI-treated TSCC patients who underwent glossectomy without any other prior therapy. Comprehensive immune profile analyses employed multiplex immunofluorescence and tissue imaging. RESULTS: Based on the hierarchies of 58 immune parameters an

"Engagement Is Not One-Dimensional": The Multiple Roles of Patient Educators With Physical Disabilities in Family Medicine.

INTRODUCTION: Patient interaction has long been central to medical training. In recent years, involving patients as educators and bringing their lived experiences of illness or disability to the classroom has been valued in clinical education. These "experts by experience" enrich learning by offering authentic perspectives that foster empathy, challenge assumptions, and promote person-centred care. To our knowledge, there is no existing research on the experiences of persons with disabilities (PWD) serving as patient educators. METHODS: Semi-structured in-depth interviews conducted with seven

Serologic Screening for Genital Herpes Infection: US Preventive Services Task Force Reaffirmation Recommendation Statement.

IMPORTANCE: Genital herpes is a common sexually transmitted infection caused by 2 related viruses, herpes simplex type 1 (HSV-1) and herpes simplex type 2 (HSV-2). Infection is lifelong; currently, there is no cure for HSV infection. Antiviral medications may provide clinical benefits to symptomatic persons. Transmission of HSV from a pregnant person to their infant can occur, most commonly during delivery; when genital lesions or prodromal symptoms are present, cesarean delivery can reduce the risk of transmission. Neonatal herpes infection is uncommon yet can result in substantial morbidity

Population-based analysis of survival in spinal muscular atrophy.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate probabilities of survival and its surrogate, that is, mechanical ventilation, in patients with spinal muscular atrophy (SMA). METHODS: We studied survival in a population-based cohort on clinical prevalence of genetically confirmed, treatment-naive patients with SMA, stratified for best acquired motor milestone (i.e., none: type 1a/b; head control in supine position or rolling: type 1c; sitting independently: type 2a; standing: type 2b; walking: type 3a/b; adult onset: type 4). We also assessed the need for mechanical ventilation as a surrogate endpoint for survival.

Obsessive compulsive disorder with and without hoarding symptoms: Characterizing differences.

OBJECTIVE: In recent years there has been some ambiguity about the way hoarding and OCD are related to each other. The present study examines the differences between persons with OCD/hoarding and OCD/non-hoarding and examines which characteristics are associated with the OCD/hoarding group. Information is established about prevalences, socio-demographical characteristics, OCD and related characteristics, OCD subtypes, comorbidity (depression, anxiety disorders and PTSD) and personality traits. METHODS: Data from baseline assessment of The Netherlands Obsessive Compulsive Disorder Association

The Attention Training Technique Reduces Anxiety and Depression in Patients With Coronary Heart Disease: A Pilot Feasibility Study.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Depression and anxiety symptoms are highly prevalent in coronary heart disease (CHD) patients and associated with poor outcome. Most psychological treatments have shown limited effectiveness on anxiety and depression in these patients. This study evaluates the feasibility of the attention training technique (ATT) in CHD patients with symptoms of anxiety and/or depression. METHODS: Five consecutive CHD patients with significant depression and anxiety symptoms with Hospital Anxiety and Depression rating scale (HADS) -anxiety or -depression subscale score > 8 received

Pharmacological inhibition of PSPH reduces serine levels and epileptic seizures.

Temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) is the most common type of drug-resistant epilepsy. Lowering the levels of N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor (NMDAR) ligands has been suggested as a promising therapeutic strategy for TLE. D-Serine gates synaptic NMDARs in the hippocampus but the effect of D-serine on seizure activity remains poorly understood. Here, we show that serine levels in the hippocampus were increased in persons with TLE and in a mouse model of TLE. Eliminating D-serine or blocking its binding with NMDARs suppressed seizures in mouse models. Astrocyte-derived L-serine was found to regulate int

Level of physical activity, well-being, stress and self-rated health in persons with migraine and co-existing tension-type headache and neck pain.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of migraine with co-existing tension-type headache and neck pain is high in the general population. However, there is very little literature on the characteristics of these combined conditions. The aim of this study was to investigate a) the prevalence of migraine with co-existing tension-type headache and neck pain in a clinic-based sample, b) the level of physical activity, psychological well-being, perceived stress and self-rated health in persons with migraine and co-existing tension-type headache and neck pain compared to healthy controls, c) the perceived abili

[Distribution of enterotoxinogenic strains among Staphylococcus aureus isolated from various sources].

A total of 406 S. aureus strains isolated from wound and mammal secretions in patients with wound infections and mastitis, from the throat of healthy children and those with respiratory disease, as well as during an outbreak of alimentary toxicoinfection, were studied. The capacity of these strains for the production of enterotoxins A, B, C, D, E, as well as the phage groups and phage types of these strains were determined. 34.2% of the strains were enterotoxigenic; the occurrence of this characteristic in staphylococci did not depend on the source of their isolation, but correlated with the r

Exploring the Role of Psychological Stress in TAKOTSUBO CARDIOMYOPATHY: The 'Broken Heart' Syndrome.

Takotsubo syndrome (TTS), or 'broken heart' syndrome, is an acute, reversible cardiomyopathy classically linked to emotional stress. Although physiological mechanisms have been extensively described, the psychological stress profile of patients with TTS remains incompletely synthesised. This study aimed to systematically review and meta-analyse observational studies examining psychological stress-related factors in patients with TTS compared with cardiac and non-cardiac control groups. We searched PubMed/MEDLINE, Embase, PsycINFO, Scopus, and Web of Science from 1 January 2011 to 31 March 2024

Medication adherence for persons with spinal cord injury and dysfunction from the perspectives of healthcare providers: A qualitative study.

Context: People with spinal cord injury and dysfunction (SCI/D) often take multiple medications (i.e. polypharmacy) to manage secondary health complications and multiple chronic conditions. Numerous healthcare providers are often involved in clinical care, increasing the risk of fragmented care, problematic polypharmacy, and conflicting health advice. These providers can play a crucial role in assisting patients with medication self-management to improve medication adherence. Design: A qualitative study involving telephone interviews, following a semi-structured guide that explored healthcare

[ADH/D and impulsiveness: Prevalence of impulse control disorders and other comorbidities, in 81 adults with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADH/D)].

UNLABELLED: Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADH/D) is a neuropsychological developmental disorder characterized by pervasive and impairing symptoms of inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. Whereas it is well known in children, there is still little information about ADH/D in adults, including prevalence. Indeed, there are actually no epidemiological studies in France, despite the considerable impact of this disorder in a patient's professional and affective life. Moreover, ADH/D rarely stays isolated, and many comorbidities often complicate the diagnostic investigation. It is
