Pisiform and hamate coalition, a rare congenital anomaly, is most often identified as an asymptomatic incidental finding on radiographs. Some patients have symptomatic coalition with ulnar-sided wrist pain or ulnar nerve neuropathy from ulnar nerve compression. Sports activities such as cycling and weight lifting can cause compression of the ulnar nerve in the hand. This report describes a case of a pisiform and hamate coalition in a 36-year-old man who reported decreased right-hand dexterity and right ulnar-sided wrist pain. The patient, an amateur weight lifter, developed right claw hand thr

Perioperative ulnar neuropathies attributed to inappropriate arm positioning and padding during surgical procedures are commonly found in adults. However, their extremely rare incidence in the pediatric population may cause absent awareness of the risk of nerve injury in anesthetized pediatric patients. Furthermore, young patients respond to conservative treatment of neuropathy less favorably than adults and their response also depends on the pathomechanism of the ulnar nerve injury. A surgeon's or anesthetist's failure to recognize all of these specifics in children may result in substantial

BACKGROUND: Morphologic changes in the cubital tunnel during elbow motion in patients with elbow osteoarthritis have not been examined in vivo. We examined changes in cubital tunnel morphology during elbow motion and characteristics of medial osteophyte development to elucidate whether cubital tunnel area and medial osteophyte size are factors contributing to cubital tunnel syndrome in patients with elbow osteoarthritis.
METHODS: We performed computed tomography of 13 primary osteoarthritic elbows in patients with cubital tunnel syndrome (group A) and 25 primary osteoarthritic elbows in patie

PURPOSE: Ulnar nerve dysfunction is a common sequela of surgical treatment of distal humerus fractures. This study addresses the null hypothesis that different types of distal humerus injuries have comparable rates of diagnosis of ulnar neuropathy.
METHODS: We assessed diagnosis of ulnar neuropathy in 107 consecutive adults who had a surgically treated fracture of the distal humerus followed up at least 6 months after injury. Diagnosis of ulnar neuropathy was defined as documentation of sensory and motor dysfunction of the ulnar nerve in the medical record. Fractures were categorized as eithe

OBJECTIVE: To assess the relationship between the cross-sectional area (CSA) of the ulnar nerve by ultrasound (US) with clinical and electrophysiologic findings in Hansen ulnar neuropathy.
METHODS: Twenty-one patients (42 arms) with Hansen disease (mean age 30.0 ± 12.97, range 13-61 years, borderline tuberculoid 29%, borderline lepromatous, 19% lepromatous leprosy 42%, and pure neuritic type 10%) were examined clinically for ulnar sensory and motor weakness. The ulnar nerve was ultrasonographically examined from the wrist to the axilla, and CSA was measured at the level of maximum enlargement

PURPOSE: To assess nerve T2 signal and caliber as diagnostic signs at magnetic resonance (MR) neurography in ulnar neuropathy at the elbow (UNE).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This prospective study was approved by the institutional review board, and written informed consent was obtained from all participants. Twenty patients with UNE were graded by using clinical criteria and nerve conduction studies as mild (n = 12) and severe (n = 8) and were compared with 20 healthy control subjects. All subjects underwent ulnar nerve MR neurography (in-plane resolution of 0.4 × 0.4 mm) covering the elbow region

BACKGROUND: There are no population-based studies of return to work after ulnar neuropathy at the elbow (UNE). We examine the predictors of return to work following a diagnosis of work-related UNE.
METHODS: Workers diagnosed with work-related UNE between 1995 and 2000 were identified from the administrative records of the Washington State workers' compensation system (n = 2,863). The medical records of 250 randomly selected surgical cases were reviewed. The end of wage replacement, our primary outcome, is a surrogate marker of the potential ability to return to work. Cox proportional hazards

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the source of an unusual and previously unreported volume conducted potential on motor nerve conduction studies. In a case of subacute ulnar neuropathy at wrist (UNW) selectively involving the deep motor branch, we recorded from the hypothenar eminence a large positive wave (2.5 ms-2 mV) preceding the negative takeoff of the delayed distal ulnar motor response.
METHODS: We performed multiple channels motor and sensory ulnar nerve (UN) conduction studies; these included selective electrical stimulation and anaesthetic block of UN branches and also selective recording

Outcome studies of revision surgical treatment for recurrent or persistent neuropathy of the ulnar nerve at the elbow are relatively rare and none involves patient self-assessment. In this study of 40 patients (41 elbows), a clear discrepancy is shown between clinical assessment and the patient's own view. From clinical assessment, 20% of patients had an excellent result, whereas only one (2.5%) patient self-reported a complete cure. More reports using patient self-assessment and validated scores are required.

The aim of this study was to identify factors predictive of complete relief of symptoms in subjects with ulnar neuropathy at the elbow (UNE), undergoing surgical release. Clinical and electrophysiological results of 19 consecutive cases of UNE belonging to 18 patients (mean age 50.6 years, range 28-73) undergoing simple decompression were reviewed retrospectively. After surgery, seven cases were free of symptoms, nine showed improvement and three were unchanged. In all cases there was significant postoperative improvement of almost all nerve conduction values. Only preoperative sensory action

Recurrent dislocation of the elbow with paradoxical dislocation of the ulnar nerve complicated by neuropathy may occur from avulsion of the lateral epicondyle and laxity of the collateral ligaments. In a 22-year-old man, the injury was successfully treated by plication of the collateral ligaments. The nerve dislocation was treated by anterior transposition. The result was satisfactory except for persistent atrophy of the ulnar innervated muscles.

This study was conducted to evaluate the capability of ultrasonography to visualize extremity nerves. Fifty healthy women and men and 10 patients suffering with hereditary motor and sensory neuropathy (HMSN) were examined. The radial nerve lateral to the humerus, ulnar nerve distal to the cubital tunnel, median nerve in the middle of the forearm and proximal to the palmar crease, sciatic nerve in the middle of the thigh and tibial and common peroneal nerves just distal to their bifurcation, were investigated, employing a 7.5-MHz electronic linear-array transducer. In healthy subjects, the medi

INTRODUCTION: Ultrasound (US) examinations of the ulnar nerve and measurement of cross-sectional area (CSA) are now used to diagnose cases of ulnar neuropathy. However, the CSA values vary across the population. The present study was planned to prepare a preliminary dataset of ulnar CSA among the symptomatic ulnar neuropathy patients diagnosed by electrodiagnostic studies at our institute and compare the values with those of healthy volunteers.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A hospital-based case-control study was conducted, which included 20 diseased upper limbs diagnosed with ulnar neuropathy and 4

BACKGROUND: Cubital tunnel syndrome (CuTS) is a frequent complication in wheelchair users, but optimal sonographic cross-sectional area (CSA) cutoff values and their diagnostic performances remain unclear. Electrodiagnosis studies for confirmation can be uncomfortable and may require another visit.
AIM: To evaluate the diagnostic performance of the sonographic ulnar nerve CSA (CSA-U) cutoff value of 10 mm2, and to identify alternative CSA-U cutoffs and assess their diagnostic accuracy at and around the medial epicondyle.
DESIGN: Single-centre, prospective, observational, cross-sectional stud

The surgical treatment of the ulnar nerve entrapment neuropathy at the elbow is controversial. None of the presently advocated procedures (simple decompression of the ulnar nerve, medial epicondylectomy, subcutaneous or submuscular anterior transposition of the ulnar nerve) has proven optimal regarding long-term results. We studied the outcome in 79 patients whose ulnar nerve had been operated on for the first time, either by simple decompression (31 cases) or by submuscular anterior transposition (48 cases). The mean follow-up was 76 months. Patients were classified according to McGowan pre-

BACKGROUND: Distal radius fractures (DRF) and ulnar neuropathy (UNE) present with reduced motor function, restricted range of motion, pain, and reduced grip strength that may lead to similar treatment approaches. With rapid and insidious onset for DRF and UNE, respectively, the contextual factors impacting an individuals' experience with the condition can vary.
PURPOSE: The aim of this secondary analysis is to compare ratings of quality of life (QoL) domains prior to treatment and 3 months post treatment for DRF and UNE.
STUDY DESIGN: This is a retrospective cohort study conducted at the Rot
